Notes: Transactive memory theory views communication as a valuable (but not perfect) tool for learning, storing, and retrieving information from other people. In this essay, we review research on transactive memory systems and elaborate on the role of communication in the development and use of such systems. In contrast to Pavitt (2003), we believe that communication can, under some conditions, facilitate the development of an effective group memory system.

Notes: This article reviews studies of the generalized (CSP) and specific (SSP) subtypes of social phobia, including their onset, course, etiology, comorbid conditions, types of situations feared, reactions (i.e., cognitive, physiological, and behavioral) to feared situations, and response to treatment. Because the differences between CSP and SSP seem difficult to reconcile with a strictly quantitative perspective, we propose a qualitative distinction. The characteristics of SSP are seen as similar to those of specific phobias, but those of CSP are not. We offer a speculative interpersonal model of CSP that emphasizes beliefs about the self being unlovable, behaviors that elicit negative self-evaluations in others, and a pattern of mutual social-distancing behaviors. We discuss the implications of a qualitative distinction between CSP and SSP and offer avenues for future inquiry.

Notes: Bimetallic alloys have been considered in terms of their wetting behavior on semiconducting BaTiO3. In an earlier study, wetting behavior was strongly linked to ohmic contact behavior. However, the wetting behavior does not always correlate in the form of high work of adhesion-low contact resistance. The departure from this trend is associated with the nature of the segregation of the solute. Two extreme cases are considered in this study: no driving force for segregation and a strong driving force. These cases are characterized with sessile drop experiments and qualitatively analyzed in terms of thermodynamic analysis, both a surface enrichment model is considered together with an energy diagram approach. Both models give excellent qualitative agreement to the observed wetting behavior of the bimetallic alloy-BaTiO3 system. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A method to measure small changes in gain and distributed loss in laser diodes during life testing is described. The evolution of the gain spectrum was computed by measuring the true spontaneous emission spectrum and the lasing wavelength of the diode with time. This method was applied to investigate the gain spectrum of InGaN multiple quantum well ridge waveguide laser diodes operating under continuous-wave (cw) conditions during diode life testing. During lasing there were large changes in the light output power versus current characteristic, but no significant change in the forward current-voltage characteristic. No catastrophic failure occurred; the light output power decreased continuously during life testing until the device stopped lasing under cw conditions. We observed an increase in pulsed threshold current of 15(±1)%, a decrease in gain at fixed current of 11(±2)%, and a slight increase in the total optical losses of 4(±2)%. These changes occurred primarily while the device was lasing under cw conditions. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The growth and properties of luminescent ZnGa2O4 thin films using pulsed laser ablation has been investigated. As-deposited films on glass and (100) MgO substrates exhibit blue-white photoluminescence with a broad emission band under ultraviolet excitation. In situ epitaxial films obtained on single crystal (100) MgO substrates possess enhanced luminescent intensity as compared to polycrystalline films on glass substrates. The enhanced luminescence in epitaxial films presumably reflects lower defect densities due to growth on low energy surfaces. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The birefringence of a photorefractive polymer composite in response to an applied electric field is used to predict the holographic index contrast attainable. Predictions have been obtained for three different polymer composites based on the charge transfer complex matrix poly(N-vinyl carbazole)/2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone, doped with electro-optic azo chromophores differing only in their alkyl substitutions. A comparison with experimental data indicates that unexpected large variations in the holographic contrast obtainable from different chromophores are, in most cases, accounted for by a corresponding variation in electric field-induced birefringence. This variation may be due to a combination of the chromophore number density and the composite viscosity. Where the birefringence does not correlate with holographic index contrast, a prediction based on a trap density limited space-charge field fits the data well. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: First hyperpolarizabilities β were obtained for CX4 molecules in gas and liquid phases from hyper-Rayleigh scattering measurements at λ=1064 nm. The gas-phase results for βxyz (atomic units) are 7.1±0.9 (CH4), 7.0±0.9 (CD4), 5.4±0.6 (CF4), and 11.0±0.9 (CCl4). Ab initio calculations of β are consistent with the experimental results for CF4 and CCl4, but not for CH4 and CD4. The effective liquid-phase β for CCl4 is 3× the gas phase value, but the liquid environment has little effect on β for the other molecules. Thermal-lens and absorption coefficients were also measured for ten liquids. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An experiment investigating laser self-focusing in underdense plasmas is presented. It was shown experimentally that the critical power for relativistic self-focusing Pc is not the only relevant parameter, in particular when the laser pulse duration is comparable to plasma particle motion times: ωp−1 for electrons and ωpi−1 for ions. Using time resolved shadowgraphy, it was demonstrated that: (i) a pulse does not relativistically self-focus if its duration is too short compared to ωp−1, even in the case where the power is greater than Pc. This is due to defocusing by the longitudinal wake which is generated by the laser pulse itself. (ii) For pulses longer than ωpi−1, self-focusing can occur even for powers lower than Pc. This is due to the radial expansion of ions, creating a channel whose effect combines with relativistic focusing and helps the pulse to self-focus. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
