Notes: Summary Adaptability of the horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (HVOR) and the optokinetic response (OKR) was examined in alert albino rabbits during sustained runs lasting 5–12 h under four different stimulus conditions. (1) Sinusoidal rotation of the rabbit in darkness by 5 ° at 1/10 Hz, or (2) sinusoidal movement of a vertical slit light by 2.5 ° or 5 ° at 1/10 Hz around the optical axis of the stationary rabbit, affected the gain of neither the HVOR nor the OKR. (3) Combination of the stimulus as in (1) with the stationary slit light increased the gain of the HVOR gradually. A plateau at about 140% of the initial control was reached in 5 h. (4) Combination of the stimulus as in (1) with the slit light movement by 10 ° in phase with the turntable decreased the HVOR gain gradually, a plateau being obtained at about 70 % of the initial control in 5 h. Changes of the HVOR gain induced in conditions (3) and (4) were not frequency-specific and accompanied by no significant modification of either the gain or phase of the OKR or the linear property of HVOR-OKR interaction. A small but significant change of the HVOR phase was also detected under the condition (3) but not (4).

Notes: Abstract Quadrupeds can acquire new gait patterns with respect to environmental changes. Yanagihara et al. have demonstrated this adaptability by experiments on a decerebrate cat. These experiments indicate that quadrupeds gradually adapt to their environment by repeating locomotion in a steady environment, and that the acquired gait pattern is persistently memorized after the locomotion. Our research aims at formulating a mathematical model of these cats' behavior and constructing a quadrupedal walking robot to realize such adaptive behavior. To date, we have proposed a mathematical description of adaptation at the level of gait pattern generation using neural oscillators. In this paper, we extend it to take into account limb dynamics. We study how to design the interaction of the oscillator and limb dynamics.

Notes: In the Japanese Industrial Standard for the x-ray fluorescence analysis of steels, the ‘estimated binary calibration curve’ method has been adopted. In this method, the calibration curve for the binary system, consisting of an analyte and the principal constituent elements is estimated and derived by using multicomponent standard samples. The measured x-ray intensity is first converted into a tentative analytical value from this calibration curve, and then the analytical result is derived from this tentative value using the correction procedure. In this paper, some methods and standard samples of making the estimated binary calibration curve are compared and discussed, also, the characteristics of the JIS method are described.

Notes: The depolarization ratios of the C=C stretching vibrational Raman lines of C2Cl4, C2HCl3, trans-C2H2Cl2 were measured using visible and UV lasers. The depolarization ratios increased evidently from visible to UV excitation, and were discussed in relation to the ratio of the scattering tensor components.

Notes: The Raman spectra of solid complexes formed between halogens as electron donors and benzene and methylated benzenes as electron acceptors were measured at 77 K. Great increase in intensity was observed for the Raman lines ν10(e1g), ν16(e2u) and ν17(e2u) of benzene on complex formation. The great intensity enhancement of these out-of-plane bending modes is reasonably explained as the result of mixing of the 1A2u (σπ*) state of benzene and the charge transfer state. The observed spectra are consistent with the crystal structure of factor group C3ν, having one halogen molecule and one benzene molecule in a unit cell, which was proposed by Person et al. from the infrared spectra. It was found that the Raman spectra of the complexes provide a good test for the Raman intensity mechanism proposed for benzene and also give important information about electronic excited states which are not identifiable by other means.

Notes: Absolute Raman intensities of benzene and ethylene derivatives were measured in the vapour phase with 5145 Å and 3371 Å excitation. Intensity increase of benzene 992 cm-1 band, which has been frequently used as an intensity standard, was found to be much smaller than expected. The observed intensity increases of ethylene derivatives nicely agree with the theory by assuming the contributing virtual states are the lowest allowed 1π, π* state.

Notes: The absolute intensities of the 802 cm-1 Raman line of liquid cyclohexane at 514.5 and 337.1 nm excitations were determined by applying the local field correction theory to corresponding absolute intensities of cyclohexane vapour. By using this Raman line as an external intensity standard, the absolute Raman intensities of the 992 cm-1 line of benzene and the 666 and 762 cm-1 lines of chloroform were measured in the liquid phase. The gaseous absolute intensities were also measured for some molecules including benzene and chloroform and comparisons between the gas and liquid phase Raman intensities were made.
