    Description / Table of Contents: Summary   Graph drawing is a new and growing area in Computer Science. It is concerned with the design, analysis, implementation and evaluation of new algorithms for aesthetically nice drawings of graphs. Through the use of some selected examples of applications, typical problems, and solutions, we would like to provide an introduction into this still relatively unknown field. And we survey activities and goals of a working group consisting of members of the universities of Halle, Köln and Passau and the Max-Planck-Institut für Informatik in Saarbrücken, that is funded by the German Science Foundation DFG under the program „Efficient Algorithms for Discrete Problems and their Applications“.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung   Das Zeichnen von Graphen ist ein junges aufblühendes Gebiet der Informatik. Es befaßt sich mit Entwurf, Analyse, Implementierung und Evaluierung von neuen Algorithmen für ästhetisch schöne Zeichnungen von Graphen. Anhand von selektierten Anwendungsbeispielen, Problemstellungen und Lösungsansätzen wollen wir in dieses noch relativ unbekannte Gebiet einführen und gleichzeitig einen Überblick über die Aktivitäten und Ziele einer von der DFG im Rahmen des Schwerpunktprogramms „Effiziente Algorithmen für Diskrete Probleme und ihre Anwendungen“ geförderten Arbeitsgruppe aus Mitgliedern der Universitäten Halle, Köln und Passau und des Max-Planck-Instituts für Informatik in Saarbrücken geben.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Across the boundaries of the medical specialties we have realized how important the concepts of quality of life and disease-related coping behavior are to understand the patients’ subjective perception of the medical condition and its treatment. Although standardized instruments are already available for different medical indications and even in the related fields of peripheral vascular and cardiac diseases, phlebology still lacks standardized concepts for evaluating quality of life and/or disease-related coping behavior in patients with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). We report on a newly developed instrument specifically designed for recording quality of life in patients with CVI. It not only meets the requirements of psychometric standards, but has also proven its applicability in clinical use. The „Tübingen Questionnaire for measuring Quality of Life in patients with CVI (TLQ-CVI)” and the results of a study on quality of life in 142 patients with various stages of chronic venous insufficiency are presented. It was possible to distinguish between Stage I/II and Stage III CVI patients with respect to parameters such as „leg complaints” and „day-to-day fears and worries”. These convey clinically relevant insights into the patient’s subjective perception of the disease and how they cope. The information gathered provides a set of reasonable target scores for clinical studies presently being carried out at various study centers in Germany incorporating the TLQ-CVI.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Dem Konzept der Lebensqualität und Krankheitsbewältigung wird in der medizinischen Disziplin fächerübergreifend eine zentrale Bedeutung insbesondere im Hinblick auf das subjektive Erleben der Erkrankung und eingesetzter Therapien durch die Patienten beigemessen. Während in benachbarten angiologischen und kardiologischen Fachdisziplinen bereits Erhebungsverfahren zur Lebensqualitätsforschung verfügbar sind, mangelt es in der Phlebologie derzeit noch an standardisierten Konzepten zur Evaluation der Lebensqualität und Krankheitsbewältigung bei Patienten mit einer chronischen Veneninsuffizienz (CVI). Die vorliegende Arbeit berichtet über ein neuentwickeltes krankheitsspezifisches Instrument zur Erfassung der Lebensqualität bei Patienten mit chronisch venöser Insuffizienz, das sowohl die Anforderungen der psychometrischen Testgütekriterien erfüllt als auch sehr praktikabel im klinischen Einsatz erscheint. Der „Tübinger Fragebogen zur Messung der Lebensqualität bei CVI-Patienten” (TLQ-CVI) sowie die Ergebnisse einer Untersuchung zur Lebensqualität von 142 Patienten mit chronisch venöser Insuffizienz unterschiedlicher Schweregrade wird erstmalig vorgestellt. Eine Unterscheidung von CVI-Patienten in den Stadien I/II vs. III war u.a. im Hinblick auf „Beinbeschwerden” und „Ängste und Sorgen im Alltag” möglich und vermittelt klinisch relevante Einsichten in die subjektive Patientensicht der Erkrankung und ihre Verarbeitung. Die Informationen aus dem TLQ-CVI stellen bereits jetzt sinnvolle Zielkriterien klinischer Prüfungen dar, die derzeit unter Einsatz des TLQ-CVI an verschiedenen Studienzentren in Deutschland durchgeführt werden.
