Notizen: Summary We report computed tomography (CT) appearance of two patients with Krabbe's disease. The most common findings included severe brain atrophy: an enlarged frontal extracerebral space, dilatation of ventricles, enlarged cisterns and enlarged cortical sulci. There was low attenuation in the corpus medullaris of the cerebellum, and symmetrical focal hypodensity in the central periventricular white matter. CT at the terminal stage (16 months) showed marked cerebral atrophy including flattening of the heads of caudate nuclei and widening of the third ventricles confirmed by a neuropathological study. There was relatively less low density on the white matter of Krabbe's disease compared with that of other leukodystrophies. These CT findings may be useful in the diagnosis. The relative lack of low density in the white matter of Krabbe's disease might be related to severe gliosis and reduced total lipid contents.

Notizen: Summary This report concerns the effect of bacterial endotoxin [lipopolysaccharide(LPS) and lipid A] on cultured human fetal astrocytes. Exposure to 1 μg/ml LPS or lipd A caused a striking stimulation of the rate of proliferation of the cells. The effect was most pronounced with exponentially growing cultures. Stimulation was associated with enhance DNA synthesis as ascertained by [3H]thymidine incorporation. These findings at the cellular level may be of relevance in the elucidation of the effects of bacterial endotoxins on the developing human brain.

Notizen: Summary Endoscopic and histopathological findings were compared in 74 patients with gastric cancer infiltrating the lower esophagus who had undergone gastrectomy to evaluate mode of esophageal infiltration. There were no early cancers. Cancer infiltration modes were histopathologically broken down into three types: superficial, whole layer, and deep layer. Endoscopic findings were broken down into five types for proximal infiltration. Endoseopy used for histological evaluation frequently revealed the protruded type to be whole layer and had a highly accurate diagnosis rate (94%); it revealed the histology of the other four types to be primarily superficial. Extent of cancer invasion was underestimated in giant-rugae tumors (40%), as endoseopy could barely detect the small nest of esophageal infiltrations. Lugol staining was useful in preventing underestimation. For flat cancer, which is poorly demarcated and is often accompanied by vascular invasion, preoperative evaluation is very difficult, requiring preoperative examination of a frozen section taken from the proximal edge of resected specimen.
