Notizen: Summary One hind leg of 80 adult rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain was made osteoporotic by immobilization for 9 weeks. Osteoporosis was noted in both the femur and the tibia when the hydrated gross bone density and the bone surface areas were measured. No signs of reversibility were observed during 10 weeks after the period of immobilization. Tetracycline and DCAF labelling failed to show significant signs of increased bone formation during the 10 weeks after remobilization. At the moment of remobilization and for some weeks thereafter, there were signs of depressed mitotic activity in the bone cells when expressed as the3H-thymidine/DNA ratio. The conclusion was that neither the cell-proliferation rate nor the cellular activity increases sufficiently for restitution of the disuse osteoporosis.

Notizen: Abstract Fifteen cases of intervertebral disc calcifications have been diagnosed in Umeå during a period of 14 years. In the literature up to now about 100 cases of intervertebral disc calcification have been reported. Our findings suggest that these calcifications are not as rare as has been stated. There are both symptomatic and silent cases. When present the clinical symptoms comprise local painin the neck, limitation of spinal movements and sometimes fever and the condition may simulate meningitis. The radiological findings are pathognomonic. The disc calcifications are most frequently found in boys especially in the cervical region. The etiology is unknown. The symptoms appear when the calcification, for some unknown reason, resorbs or herniates. Neurological symptoms are rare. The treatment is symptomatic and the clinical course self-limiting with complete recovery within a few weeks.

Notizen: Abstract Bone scintigraphy was performed in 16 men with newly diagnosed prostatic carcinoma before orchiectomy as well as 2 weeks and 2 months after operation. The uptake in the lower thoracic and lumbar vertebrae was registered up to 240 min after injection of 99mTc-MDP and was then calculated for each patient and vertebra. The relative standard deviation in measured uptake due to measuring technique was estimated to be±7%. In eight patients, who had normal bone scintigraphies before orchiectomy, there were no changes in the uptake values after operation. The remaining eight patients had widespread metastatic involvement prior to treatment. Six of these patients showed a so called “flare phenomenon” in the abnormal vertebrae which means an initial increase in uptake after operation followed by a decreased uptake in response to therapy. One patient had a continuously increased uptake in all the abnormal vertebrae which correlated well with the clinical progression of the disease, while in another patient both reactions were seen. Thus, repeated quantitative bone scintigraphies using 99mTc-MDP can be made in a reproducible way and can be a useful tool to follow a patient's response to treatment.
