Notes: Summary In order to demonstrate the ascending projection from the locus ceruleus by degeneration silver method, the nucleus was destroyed unilaterally in rats and the brains were stained by a modified Fink-Heimer method following various survival times. Additional experiments included the bilateral destruction of the locus ceruleus and the administration of 6-OH-DOPA. For the demonstration of degenerated terminals in the cerebral cortex it is essential to choose an optimal survival time of 4 or 5 days, keep the time of fixation below 1 week, and perform treatments with permanganate and with silver at 37°C. The trajectory and distribution of the cerulo-cortical tract as revealed by the silver degeneration methods is in agreement with the results of the histofluorescence method, with some minor differences. The ascending fibers run through Forel's tegmental fascicle, turn rostro-ventrally to the subthalamus, enter and cross the internal capsule, pass through the ventral part of the caudate-putamen and distribute to the entire cerebral cortex. The tract is mainly ipsilateral, though some fibers are crossing.

Notes: Abstract Saccharomyces cerevisiae has only one putative gene (designated CPL1) for a cysteine protease with a protease domain similar to that of calpain. This gene product shows significant sequence similarity to PalBp, a fungal (Emericella nidulans) calpain-like protease that is responsible for adaptation under alkaline conditions, both in the protease domain and the domain following the protease domain. CPL1 disruptant strains show impaired growth at alkaline pH, but no obvious growth defects under acidic pH conditions. This phenotype is complemented by the wild-type CPL1 gene, and its protease activity is essential for complementation. Disruption of CPL1 also causes reduced sporulation efficiency and promotes the degradation of the transcription factor Rim101p, which is involved in the sporulation pathway and has been shown to accumulate in a C-terminally truncated, active form under alkaline conditions. Furthermore, expression of the C-terminally truncated Rim101p suppressed the alkaline sensitivity associated with CPL1 disruption. These results indicate that a calpain-like cysteine protease, Cpl1p, plays an important role in alkaline adaptation and sporulation processes, via regulation of the turnover and processing of the transcription factor Rim101p.

Notes: Summary The noradrenergic terminals in the substantia gelatinosa of the dorsal horn of the cervical spinal cord of the rat were investigated by means of the histofluorescence technique and electron-microscopic cytochemistry using the glyoxylic acid-KMnO4 fixation technique. In accordance with the topographical distribution of fluorescent catecholaminergic fibers, noradrenergic terminals containing small granular vesicles were frequently observed electron microscopically in the outer layer of the substantia gelatinosa. These terminals were most frequently found to appose without showing typical synaptic features, small-caliber dendrites, spine apparatus, and rarely, large caliber dendrites. Only in a few cases, the noradrenergic terminals exhibited typical synaptic contacts with dendritic elements of small size. In addition, noradrenergic terminals apposed non-noradrenergic terminals containing small agranular vesicles. In rats bearing surgical lesions of the dorsal roots, no noradrenergic terminal were found in contact with the degenerated axon terminals in the substantia gelatinosa. These findings suggest that the noradrenergic afferents to the substantia gelatinosa may exert their influence on sensory transmission via dorsal horn cells.

Notes: The thermal decomposition of triethylarsine (TEAs) has been studied. It decomposes at a lower temperature than arsine (AsH3). The decomposition proceeds via a radical process at a temperature above 700°C. Epitaxial growth using TEAs has been investigated. A gallium arsenide (GaAs) layer with good morphology was obtained, but the layer was found to contain a considerable amount of carbon impurity originating from TEAs. The use of TEAs with 10% AsH3 or with 20% ammonia (NH3) apparently improves the quality of GaAs layer. A possible scheme for reducing carbon incorporation is discussed.

Notes: Highly purified trimethylaluminum [(CH3)3Al] was prepared by reducing the contamination of volatile impurities such as organic silicon and dimethyl-aluminum methoxide [(CH3)2AlOCH3]. The concentration of methoxy group in (CH3)3Al was found to decrease considerably when (CH3)2Al was distilled in the presence of aluminum trihalide. Among the halides, purification efficiency increased in the order I〉Br〉Cl.High-quality AlGaAs layer and AlGaAs/GaAs modulation doped structures were grown by organometallic vapor-phase epiloxy (OMVPE) using the purified (CH3)3Al. Their electrical properties were discussed in relation to the volatile impurity in the source gas.

Notes: Semi-empirical molecular orbital calculations were carried out for the compounds (C2H5)3As, (C2H5)3Ga and RAsH2 (R = C2H5, i-C3H7, i-C4H9, and t-C4H9) by using the CNDO/2-U program, and their capability of β-elimination reaction is compared on the basis of the torsion energy to the transition state, electrostatic interactions and orbital overlapping between the central atom and the β-hydrogen, and bond order of the metal-carbon, and carbon-hydrogen bond. In the comparison of (C2H5)3As with (C2H5)3Ga, we found that the β-elimination of (C2H5)3As could hardly be expected to take place in the thermal decomposition. The capability of β-elimination would be smaller in C2H5AsH2 than that in (C2H5)3As. Moreover when the ethyl group is replaced by a t-butyl group in RAsH2, the β-elimination reaction appears to become more difficult and a large possibility for a radical process is suggested.
