Description / Table of Contents: Alkyl zirconium trihalides can be prepared from zirconium tetrachloride or tetrabromide and zinc dialkyls in toluene as a solvent. Using pyridine, dialkyl zirconium dihalides are formed. Some of these new organozirconium compounds are isolated and characterised in form of complexes with bipyridyl.

Description / Table of Contents: A New Metastable Oxocompound with Tunnel Structure: Ba2SrLu22O36High temperature reactions yield single crystals of a new metastable compound: Ba2SrLu22O36 (hexagonal symmetry, space group C6h2-P63/m, a = 17.60(6), c = 3.33(4) Å, Z = 1). X-ray results led to an octahedra framework with two types of tunnels. A comparative discussion of the tunnel occupation is given.

Description / Table of Contents: Ba3Lu4O9: Synthesis and Crystal Structure DeterminationSingle crystals of Ba3Lu4O9 were prepared by high temperature reactions (CO2-Lasertechnique). The single crystal X-ray work leads to a rhombohedral symmetry with a = 8.96 Å and α = 39.42° (space group C34 - R3). Characteristic features of this crystal structure are shown and discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Compound Formation of MeO:M2O3. VII. BaSrCaTm22O36, a New Metastable Compound of High DisorderBaSrCaTm22O36 could be prepared by CO2-Laser technique. The metastable compound has hexagonal symmetry (a = 17.60, c = 3.35 Å; space group C2h6—P63/m). The X-ray investigations of the single crystals show a relationship to the SrCa2Lu10O18 structure. BaSrCaTm22O36 has a complicated and disordered metal distribution of Ba, Sr, and Ca in the tunnel structure.

Notes: Some physical investigations of segmented block copolymers of uniform chain length and defined structure and their constituents are described. Special attention was payed to the thermal behaviour of these new substances with respect 1. to the phase transformations in the solid and liquid state and 2. to the thermal stability of the materials. Several of these oligomers show phase transitions in the solid state. In some instances, the morphology of the solid material depends strongly on the sample history. The influence of the crystallization conditions is discussed. For the special case of esters of 4,4′-isopropylidenediphenol (bisphenol A) with isophthalic acid detailed investigations by dielectric and Brillouin spectroscopy of the glass-forming process are presented.

Notes: The room temperature phase of the physical/chemical vapor-deposited statistical co-oligomer VDF/TrFE(70/30) has been characterized by different experimental methods such as small-angle x-ray scattering, wide-angle x-ray diffraction, size-exclusion chromatography, infrared absorption and optical refractometry. The characterization of the elastic properties was carried out using high-performance Brillouin spectroscopy in connection with special scattering geometries. The co-oligomer VDF/TrFE(70/30) was obtained by cracking the parent statistical copolymer and subsequently vapor depositing the shortened chains on highly oriented PTFE substrates (PIA-technique). The room temperature phase of the resulting oriented waxy crystal mats of VDF/TrFE(70/30) is predominantly ferroelectric. The physical properties are very different to those of similarly PIA-prepared n-alkanes, perfluoroalkanes, and blockfluoroalkanes. The microstructure of VDF/TrFE(70/30) is interpreted in terms of partially crystalline nano-sized structures giving rise to a marked freezing process below room temperature. © 1995 John wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: To overcome the difficulties in measuring high-frequency shear constants of polymeric materials by ultrasonic or Brillouin scattering technques, we extrapolate results from oriented materials to zero birefringence. Shear constants C44 in the high-frequency limit (GHz) are determined for polyethylene, poly(ethylene terephthalate), poly(vinyl chloride), poly(methyl methacrylate), and polycarbonate using Brillouin scattering. Accurate values of Poisson's ratio are derived. The extrapolation to full orientation using an amended Moseley relation gives upper bounds for the “intrinsic birefringence.” Changes in the character of the orientation process are easily detected by monitoring the mode numbers, which are defined by analogy to Poisson's ratio. Extrapolation of these ratios to their upper bound 0.5 gives an independent check of the maximum intrinsic birefringence. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
