Notes: Titanocene dichloride is one of the most promising cancerostatica of the future: nevertheless, its high activity against several tumor cells was discovered 20 years ago. Detailed knowledge of the mechanism of hydrolysis of titanocene dichloride and its stability in the infusion liquid is a prerequisite for clinical tests and for a successful application for permission as medication. Capillary electrophoresis (CE) was used to observe the hydrolysis behavior of titanocene dichloride in aqueous solutions. The hydrolysis products were separated in a 20 mM phosphate buffer, pH 6, and in a 20 mM malic acid buffer, pH 3. Up to five hydrolysis products were obtained. A significant influence of the sample preparation (pH, isoionic additives) on the hydrolysis rate was observed. The hydrolysis products were characterized by the UV scan and the element-selective particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) detection technique. The results obtained correspond with the hydrolysis mechanism described in the literature. The determination of free titanocene dichloride in human plasma failed due to the high affinity of the plasma proteins for this compound.

Notes: Principal component analysis is a useful method for analysing data-matrices. By analysing separate class models, i.e. disjoint principal component modelling as in the SIMCA or FCVPC programs (developed for supervised and unsupervised principal component analysis respectively), the principal component variance/covariance decomposition (class models) may be used to investigate and interpret the data-structure of separate classes. The potential of comparing the loadings of variables on subsequent eigenvectors in two class models where the same variables have been used will give information for determining how the variance/covariance in the two datasets differ. This information may then be used either to formulate a hypothesis or to select variables which are specific for the different classes.

Notes: Two new antenna polyelectrolytes, poly(sodium styrenesulfonate-co-N-vinylcarbazole) (PSSS-VCz) and poly[sodium styrenesulfonate-co-N-(acryloyloxyhexyl)carbazole](PSSS-AHCz) have been synthesized. Both polymers were found to solubilize large hydrophobic compounds such as perylene in aqueous solution, but PSSS-AHCz was much more efficient than PSSS-VCz. The distribution coefficients of perylene between the polymer pseudophase and water was determined to be (2.9 ± 0.1) × 106 and (4.0 ± 0.2) × 104 in PSSS-AHCz and PSSS-VCz, respectively. The greater solubilizing ability of PSSS-AHCz is attributed to the higher content of hydrophobic monomer units in the polymer. Both copolymers displayed photocatalytic activity, absorbing light in the UV-visible spectral region. Energy can then be transferred to a solubilized molecule or dissolved oxygen and induce photochemical reactions. The model reaction used in this study was the photosensitized oxidation of perylene solubilized in aqueous polymer solutions. PSSS-AHCz was found to be a much more efficient photocatalyst than PSSS-VCz. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of PSSS-AHCz is attributed to the greater concentration of carbazole chromophores, the higher local concentration of probe in the polymeric pseudophase and possibly to the elimination of the low-energy excimer.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion of Grey Cast Iron in Concentrated Sulphuric AcidThe Pauling process of regenerating spent sulphuric acid is an example of industrial application of the corrosion resistance of grey cast iron in boiling strong sulphuric acid. The corrosion behaviour of cast iron in boiling sulphuric acid depends on the corrosion potential. At a high corrosion potential, the material shows a stable passive state. In a study on the influence of the alloy components Si, Cu and Sn on the corrosion resistance of grey cast iron, the following results were derived:In the active state, cast iron containing more than 1,4-1,5% Si exhibits a corrosion maximum in 97% boiling sulphuric acid, whereas alloyed grey cast iron with low Si content displays in the active state better corrosion behaviour over the whole concentration range from 93-98% H2SO4.When the alloyed cast iron is in the passive state, corrosion resistance increases as the silicon content is reduced and the sulphuric acid concentration is raised.

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of oxygen additions during gas nitriding on the structure of the nitrided layersThe influence of controlled oxygen additions during gas nitriding of steels on the structure and built-up of the nitrided layers as well as on the nitriding reactions was investigated with metallurgical methods and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The results show that oxygen additions below the oxidising threshold slightly improve the nitriding behaviour of unalloyed steels. Furthermore, it is shown that for alloyed steel, which are tending to passivation starting form chromium concentrations of 3%, the nitriding can be considerably improved by oxygen additions. The passivation layers present for these steels are destroyed by external oxidation during the oxinitriding process. This external oxidation and the internal nitriding occurred parallel in the early stages of the oxinitriding.
