    Notes: Summary Human umbilical venous endothelial cells were transformed with a temperature-sensitive mutant of simian virus 40, tsA640, and a cell line, subcultured for over 20 serial passages, was established at a temperature permissive for the virus. Treatment of transformed endothelium with 3μg/ml chloroquine caused a specific reduction of α-glactosidase activity, without cell injury, and revealed several electron-dense materials surrounded by single unit membranes. Crystalline lamellae in lysosomes with a periodicity of 6.5 nm, which are typically seen in various tissues in Fabry disease, were produced in the presence of a glycosphingolipid mixture. These cells should be useful for in vitro pathophysiological studies on Fabry endothelium.

    Notes: Abstract We have designed a new abdominal wall lifter for gasless laparoscopic surgery which consists of stainless steel rods and iron lifters. They elevate the abdominal wall up like a dome-type camping tent, which does not disturb any manipulation of scope or X-ray camera. We received a good view of the peritoneal cavity without CO2 gas insufflation in ten patients with cholecystitis. This will be helpful for general laparoscopic surgery or laparoscopic assisted surgery with the use of conventional forceps or extracorporeal suturing through a valveless trocar.

    Notes: Summary Endoscopic and histopathological findings were compared in 74 patients with gastric cancer infiltrating the lower esophagus who had undergone gastrectomy to evaluate mode of esophageal infiltration. There were no early cancers. Cancer infiltration modes were histopathologically broken down into three types: superficial, whole layer, and deep layer. Endoscopic findings were broken down into five types for proximal infiltration. Endoseopy used for histological evaluation frequently revealed the protruded type to be whole layer and had a highly accurate diagnosis rate (94%); it revealed the histology of the other four types to be primarily superficial. Extent of cancer invasion was underestimated in giant-rugae tumors (40%), as endoseopy could barely detect the small nest of esophageal infiltrations. Lugol staining was useful in preventing underestimation. For flat cancer, which is poorly demarcated and is often accompanied by vascular invasion, preoperative evaluation is very difficult, requiring preoperative examination of a frozen section taken from the proximal edge of resected specimen.
