Notes: Summary Computed axial tomography plays an essential role in the diagnosis of mediastinal tumors. It can differentiate between retrosternal fat, thymic tissue and thymoma. A median stemotomy is the operative approach of choice. It provides optimal access to the mediastinum which is a prerequisite in the radical removal of a thymoma as well as in the surgical treatment of thymus hyperplasia which we believe has to be treated by radical thymectomy. The prognosis mainly depends on whether invasion of adjacent structures was present at the time of operation or not.

Notes: Summary Among patients suffering from myasthenia gravis, thymic hyperplasia can be found in 65% and a tumor in 8%–28%. Clinical diagnosis can be difficult. Therefore, computed axial tomography is of great diagnostic importance. There is increasing evidence that a thymectomy should always be performed if thymic tissue can be shown by CAT scan to be present in the anterior mediastinum. As operative treatment we prefer a median sternotomy, which makes it easier to remove the thymus completely. Postoperatively the patients should be under neurological surveillance.

Notes: Abstract Positron lines were observed in heavy ion-atom collisions at bombarding energies close to the Coulomb barrier in subcritical systems with the sum of the atomic numbers of the colliding nucleiZ u =Z 1+Z 2 being smaller thanZ u =172. Each collision system, studied,208Pb +208Pb(Zu=164),238U+181Ta(Zu=165), and238Au(Zu=171), exhibits the emission of two positron lines withZ u -independent c.m. energies of ∼ 258 keV and ∼ 340 keV, and with widths of about 30 keV, superimposed on continuous positron spectra from nuclear pair decay and pair emission induced by the time changing Coulomb field of the collision. The production cross section of thee +-lines rises with a high power ofZ u (ocZ u 22), which is comparable to theZ u 20-dependence for the collision induced positrons.

Notes: Abstract The one-neutron transfer reactions d(132,136 Xe, p)133,137 Xe have been investigated in inverse kinematics with xenon beams incident on deuterium loaded titanium targets. The angular distributions of the protons, measured with a detector array of 100 PIN-photodiodes, have been analyzed using standard DWBA. Generally, good agreement is obtained with results previously obtained in reactions induced by light-ion beams.

Notes: Hydrogen and hydrogen-containing species (H2O, OH etc.) play a dominant role in the various properties of glass surfaces and technical oxidic thin films deposited on glass. The amount of hydrogen and its distribution with depth are influenced by preparation and production processes, film materials, density and voids, etc. The 15N nuclear reaction technique, which works quantitatively and non-destructively, was used to investigate glass surfaces and thin films of TiO2, Ta2O5 and SiO2 produced by sol-gel processes, reactive evaporation, sputtering and ion plating on glass substrates. An increase or decrease in hydrogen content influences optical and mechanical properties such as the refractive index and adhesion of the films.

Notes: The hydrogen concentration profiles of electrochromic multilayer systems produced by evaporation have been determined by means of nuclear reaction analysis. The H content of individual oxidic materials was found to be larger than for single films, especially for SiO2. The time-dependent H uptake under various ambient conditions was investigated. Systems produced by ion plating were also profiled for hydrogen.
