Notizen: The accuracy of three numerical algorithms - the tangent-stiffness radial-return, secant-stiffness radial-return and simple radial-return methods - is analysed against exact solutions for the pressure-modified von Mises yield criterion with the associated flow rule. The governing equations of the exact solutions are derived using a simple and innovative geometrical approach, in terms of a pair of non-linear, first order differential equations, in rate change of the deviatoric radius and in rate change of angular locations on the deviatoric plane. For both accuracy and efficiency, and for small and large time steps, the secant-stiffness radial-return method is the best of all.

Notizen: Implementation of the 3-D finite element method (FEM) of sheet forming operations has proceeded slowly. In particular, describing the arbitrary tool surfaces in an accurate and smooth manner, with well behaved first and second derivatives, has been a major obstacle. A new geometric method, suitable for representing any rigid tool surface, has been developed and shown to be superior to the usual schemes. The new method relies on the described tool surface for position data only. The spatial derivatives are obtained by considering only the sheet mesh nodal positions. This new scheme has been implemented with a rigid-viscoplastic FEM program using general surface descriptions based on B-splines and linear inter-polation. Analytic representations of a hemispherical and rounded square punch were also compared. the comparisons show that the proposed method offers several advantages over other general formulations.1. The new representation is the proper one for formulating the equilibrium condition. Alternate forms can produce spurious results.2. The proposed method introduces inherently smooth surface derivatives that improve numerical stability, even with crude surface resolution. Suitable test problems show covergence with the new method far past the divergence points of the simulations using the standard general surface description.3. The method is reasonably efficient, with a time penalty of approximately 30-50 per cent (unoptimized) with respect to analytic surface descriptions.

Notizen: A broad class of engineering problems in fracture mechanics, thermal/fluid transport and electromagnetic theory involve the evaluation of two-dimensional finite part integrals of the form A method for evaluation of such integrals is developed by deriving an equivalent integral using Fourier transformation. This equivalent integral does not involve a kernel with singular behaviour. Consequently, standard numerical integration methodologies with conventional analytical evaluation techniques can be used in the finite element computations. The accuracy and convergence of the developed numerical procedure are successfully demonstrated by numerical examples for planar fracture geometries.

Notizen: The time evolution of a line puff, a turbulent non-buoyant element with significant momentum, is studied using the renormalization group (RNG) k-∊ model. The numerical results show that the puff motion is characterized by a vortex pair flow; the computed flow details and scalar mixing characteristics can be described by self-similar relations beyond a dimensionless time of around 30. The added mass coefficient of the puff motion is found to be approximately unity. The predicted puff flow and mixing rate are substantially similar to those obtained from the standard k-∊ model and are well supported by experimental data. The computed scalar field reveals significant secondary concentration peaks trailing behind in the wake of the puff. The present results suggest that the overall mixing rate of a puff is primarily determined by the large-scale motion and that streamline curvature probably plays a minor role. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: This paper addressed the implementation of vortex filament methods on parallel machines with distributed memory to simulate a three-dimensionally evolving jet. Vortical structure developments due to Kelvin-Helmholtz instability of the axially perturbed jet are also examined. The implementation is conducted in a single-programme multiple-data (SPMD) environment and the parallelism is focused on issues of data distribution, efficient support of parallel I/O and overlapping of communications with computations. In addition, since the number of segment markers in a filament is dynamically growing according to the requirement of numerical accuracy, a novel packet-oriented data structure is proposed not only to partition filament segment markers among distributed processors but also to support dynamical load balancing at run time. This work is the first to apply packet-oriented structures to implement a parallel vortex filament method. Experimental results indicate performance improvement from 1·5 to 2·6 times over static schemes on nCUBE2, DEC Alpha and IBM SP2 by incorporating the proposed scheme with packet-oriented structures. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Notizen: A set of field equations, the associated finite element model formulations and numerical methodology for thermomechanical response evaluations of fluid-saturated media under finite deformation have been presented in Part I of the companion manuscript.1 In this paper, the formulations and methodologies are initially validated through benchmark model comparisons prior to constitutive model sensitivity analysis and subsequent thermomechanical response determination. The responses for the testbed problems, using the developed solution algorithm, compare favourably with the reported results. The response investigations for complex geomechanical problems illustrate the general applicability of the developed finite element model simulator in predicting the long-term thermal, pore pressure, displacement and stress responses of fluid-saturated porous media subjected to thermomechanical loading, as encountered in nuclear waste management scenarios. The presented formulations and numerical procedures can also be used to investigate a wide range of engineering problems involving hygrothermomechanical response prediction.
