Notizen: A geometrically non-linear version of the well known 8-node Wilson brick element is presented. The element is based on a sound variational formulation and the modified method of incompatible modes, which are shown to render quite a satisfying, locking-free performance in some challenging large displacement problems.

Notizen: An efficient solution procedure for elasto-plastic analysis of Reissner-Mindlin plates has been proposed in this work. The main ingredients which render efficiency are: what appears to be an optimally tuned four-node plate element with assumed shear strains and incompatible bending modes; an elasto-plastic constitutive model given directly in terms of stress resultants; and efficient computation of plastic flow which simplifies to a solution of a single scalar equation and remaining state update computation. The performance of the element has been proved very satisfying in both elastic singularity-dominated and elasto-plastic problems.

Notizen: Thick shell and solid elements presented in this work are derived from variational principles employing independent rotation fields. Both elements are built on a special hierarchical interpolation and both possess six degrees of freedom per node. Performance of the elements is evaluated on a set of problems in elastostatics. However, the formulation presented herein is also suitable for transient and non-linear problems.

Notizen: We discuss both linear and geometrically non-linear finite element analysis of elastic beams, taking into account the shear deformation. In linear analysis, a novel shallow beam element formulaton is consistently derived, and the end result is more suitable for the finite element implementation than earlier attempts. The element is very resourceful for an explanation of membrane and shear locking phenomena and exploration of their possible remedies. In addition, it sheds some light on locking phenomena in non-linear analysis. In non-linear analysis, we discuss the finite element implementation of the finite strain beam theory of Reissner.

Notizen: A new computational model for the analysis of friction phenomena is presented in this work. The model is a regularized form of the Coulomb friction law, which stems from the analogy of friction and plasticity phenomena. The basic difference from the classical plasticity is the non-linear form of both the normal and the tangential elastic compliance. The numerical implementation of the model is also discussed. The methodology presented herein is used for the analysis of both dynamic and quasi-static problems. The dynamic substructuring and the static condensation are used to enhance the computational efficiency.

Notizen: A quadrilateral membrane finite element with drilling degrees of freedom is derived from variational principles employing an independent rotation field. Both displacement based and mixed approaches are investigated. The element exhibits excellent accuracy characteristics. When combined with a plate bending element, the element provides an efficient tool for linear analysis of shells.

Notizen: We discuss a geometrically non-linear method of incompatible modes. The model problem chosen for the discussion is the finite elasticity with independent rotations. The conditions which ensure the convergence of the method and the methodology to construct incompatible modes are presented. A detailed derivation of variational equations and their linearized form is given for a two-dimensional plane problem. A couple of geometrically non-linear two-dimensional elements with independent rotational freedoms are proposed based on the presented methodology. The elements exhibit a very satisfying performance over a set of problems in finite elasticity.

Notizen: We examine theoretical and computational aspects of three-dimensional finite rotations pertinent to the dynamics of beams. The model problem chosen for consideration is the Reissner beam theory capable of modelling finite strains and finite rotations in geometrically exact manner. Special emphasis is placed on clarifying the geometry aspects, finite rotation updates and the associated linearization procedure pertaining to different choices of rotation parameters. The latter is shown to play an important role in constructing the optimal implementation of a time-stepping scheme. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: The well-known phenomenological model of small strain rate-independent plasticity is reformulated in this paper. The main difference from the classical expositions concerns the absence of the plastic strain from the list of state variables. We show that with the proposed choice of state variables, including the total and the elastic strains and strain-like variables which control hardening, we recover all the ingredients of the classical model from a minimum number of hypotheses: instantaneous elastic response and the principle of maximum plastic dissipation. We also show that using a regularized, penalty-like form of the principle of maximum plastic dissipation, we can recover the classical viscoplasticity model. As opposed to the previous schemes used for the finite element implementation of this model (e.g. B-bar method), we propose an approach in which the basic set of equations need not be modified. The operator split method is used to simplify the details of the numerical implementation concerning both the computation of state variables and the incompatible mode based finite element approximations. The latter proves to be indispensable for accommodating the near-incompressible deformation patterns arising in the classical plasticity. An extensive set of numerical simulations is used to illustrate the proposed formulation. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: Theoretical and computational aspects of vector-like parametrization of three-dimensional finite rotations, which uses only three rotation parameters, are examined in detail in this work. The relationship of the proposed parametrization with the intrinsic representation of finite rotations (via an orthogonal matrix) is clearly identified. Careful considerations of the consistent linearization procedure pertinent to the proposed parametrization of finite rotations are presented for the chosen model problem of Reissner's non-linear beam theory. Pertaining details of numerical implementation are discussed for the simplest choice of the finite element interpolations for a 2-node three-dimensional beam element. A number of numerical simulations in three-dimensional finite rotation analysis are presented in order to illustrate the proposed approach.
