Notes: Summary From 1971 to 1984 in our institution, multiple carcinomas of the colon and rectum were observed in 99 of 1352 patients (7.3%). Sixty-one patients (4.5%) hadsynchronous lesions, 38 (2.8%)metachronous malignancies. The 5-year survival rate after curative (R 0) resection was 43.2% for synchronous malignancies and thus clearly lower than the rate for corresponding single carcinomas (58.4%). Metachronous malignancies showed a 5-year survival rate of 85.7% after curative resection which, however, could only be performed in 57.9% of these patients. Therefore, more intensive effort should be made early toward detection of metachronous malignancies.
