    Notes: Reaction of [Yb(OAr)2(THF)3] (OAr = OC6H2-2,6-tBu2-4-R; R = H, Me, tBu) with perfluorodecalin in THF at room temperature results in C-F activation and formation of the first heteroleptic aryloxofluorolanthanoid complexes, [Yb(OAr)2F(THF)]2. Oxidation of bis(cyclopentadienyl)ytterbium(II) with perfluoro(methylcyclohexane) or perfluorodecalin in DME surprisingly gives unsolvated [YbCp2F]3. The analogous reaction of bis(methylcyclopentadienyl)ytterbium(II) yields unsolvated [Yb(MeCp)2F]4, whilst in THF, the oxidation provides [Yb(MeCp)2F(THF)]2. Treatment of [YbCp2F(THF)]2 with triphenylphosphane oxide gives [YbCp2F(OPPh3)]2. X-ray structure determinations revealed [Yb(OAr)2F(THF)]2 (R = H or tBu) to be centrosymmetric fluoride-bridged dimers with five-coordination for ytterbium. Examination of the structures of the cyclopentadienyl complexes showed that [YbCp2F]3 is trimeric with formal eight-coordination for ytterbium and a planar (YbF)3 ring, whereas [Yb(MeCp)2F]4 is an eight-coordinate tetramer having a puckered (YbF)4 ring with F-Yb-F angles of ca. 90° and Yb-F-Yb angles close to 180° [178.9(4), 168.4(3)°]. Both [Yb(MeCp)2F(THF)]2 and [YbCp2F(OPPh3)]2 are nine-coordinate fluoride-bridged dimers.

    Notes: (η2-Formaldehyde)zirconocene dimer (8) cleanly adds one or two molar equivalents of the borane HB(C6F5)2 by insertion of the H-[B] unit into the zirconium-carbon bond of the metallaoxirane moieties to form the mono- and bis-insertion products 16 and 17, respectively. These systems contain five-membered heterocyclic rings that are built up by connecting five different elements, namely H, B, C, O, and Zr. The bis(borane) insertion product 17 was characterized by an X-ray crystal structure analysis. (Butadiene)zirconocene reacts with HB(C6F5)2 in a similar way by insertion of the H-[B] unit into the (butadiene)C4-Zr linkage to form the metallacycle 18.

    Notes: The total formation of β-glucosidase by the wild strain of Aspergillus niger ZIMET 43 746 is non-growth-associated. In discontinuous culture the total β-glucosidase activity related to the mycelium is incresing with the age of the mycelium. The complete release of the remaining mycelial-associated β-glucosidase is dependent on the structure of the mycelium. In the cases of the mycelium forms pellets throughout the growth phase than the release of β-glucosidase is accelerated compared to the release from loosly branched mycelium. Incresing shear stress caused by increasing of the impeller speed promotes the formation of pellets.

    Notes: The specific growth rate of the ethanol producing bacterium Zymomonas mobilis was lower in the presence of oxygen than under anaerobic conditions. Aerobically, considerable amounts of acetaldehyde and acetic acid were formed in addition to the normal fermentation products, ethanol and carbon dioxide. This bacterium contains considerable amounts of pentacyclic triterpenoids, mainly 1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydroxypentane-29-hopane. It seems that stability and permeability of the cytoplasmic membrane of this rather ethanol tolerant organism is achieved by the hopanoid content. A continuous culture of Zymomonas mobilis produced 60 g/l ethanol over a test period of 39 days. This strain was used for ethanol production from an enzymatically hydrolyzed wheat starch fraction on an industrial scale of 100 m3.

    Notes: Freeze-fracturing is especially suitable for the investigation of membrane structures. In contrast to ultrathin sectioning, large areas of the membranes are exposed. The true surface of membranes, however, can be seen only after etching (vacuum sublimation of ice) because during fracturing the frozen membrane is split between the two lipid layers. The representation of the hydrophobic region of the membrane reveals particles representing integral membrane proteins or, exceptionally, micelles of membrane lipids. Special structures on microbial membranes are, e.g., regular particle arrangements, invaginations and lipid domains with a periodic pattern of curvatures. There are still many unsolved questions concerning these structures, but the occurrence or the alteration of such structures as well as the density of “etching holes” on the membrane fracture face can be used as indicators for membrane perturbations.

    Notes: Individual culture supernatants of six cellulolytic fungi and their mixed enzyme systems were compared in hydrolysis of pure celluloses and cellulose-rich wastes. It has been observed that the hydrolysis rate of pure cellulosie substances in general increased by mixed enzymes as compared to the enzymes supernatant derived from only one microbial source. This effect was particularly high when Trichoderma and Penicillium enzyme systems were operated together.

    Notes: The use of the expensive IPTG for induction of the tac-promoter is not practicable at the industrial scale because of the large amounts necessary for induction. We developed a system in which IPTG as inducer was replaced by lactose which induces the tac-promoter with the same efficiency. In E. coli CW3011 (pOF1.0) lactose is utilized as inducer and carbon source even in the presence of glucose, presumably as a consequence of the overproduction of lac-permease.
