Notizen: Abstract A novel combination of methods is shown to produce semiconducting WS2 thin films with properties close to those of a single crystal. The first step requires the deposition of a very thin Ni layer on a quartz substrate. On top of it an amorphous, sulphur rich, (WS3 +x ) thin film is deposited by reactive rf sputtering. The final annealing step in an argon atmosphere yields 200 nm thick WS2 films. X-ray diffraction shows that the films crystallize in the 2H-WS2 phase and are perfectly oriented with the (002) basal planes parallel to the substrate. Residual W18O49 needles andβ-NiS grains are detected by transmission electron microscopy. The dc conductivity and its activation energy have values typical of bulk crystals. The optical absorption spectrum measured at Room Temperature (RT) shows excitonic peaks at the same energies as in a single crystal. RT photoconductivity measured as a function of wavelength is shown to result from interband transitions.

Notizen: We recently reported that the growth of normal rat pleural mesothelial cells (RPMCs) is inhibited by conditioned media from either in vivo or in vitro transformed RPMCs. In this study we report that the growth of normal RPMCs is inhibited by epidermal growth factor (EGF). This was demonstrated by using three methods of investigation. Two types of studies were carried out with growing cells. First, cell counts indicated that the number of cells was reduced in EGF-treated cultures when compared with untreated cultures. Second, the percentage of S cells detected by flow cytometry following treatment with EGF was lower than without EGF. In other experiments, incorporation of tritiated thymidine in confluent cells was decreased by EGF treatment, either in the presence or absence of fetal calf serum; these effects were dose dependent and were observed from 2 ng/ml EGF. Lower EGF concentrations did not significantly modify thymidine incorporation when compared with untreated cells. Analysis of 125I EGF binding experiments by the Scatchard method indicated that RPMCs possess EGF receptors (about 105 per cell) with low ligand binding affinity (Kd = 1.7 ± 0.4 nM). These results indicate that EGF might modulate the growth of RPMCs.

Notizen: The electronic properties of amorphous and ion-implanted polycrystalline SnO2 films have been studied using x-ray photoemission spectromicroscopy. First, we analysed the degree of oxidation and the homogeneity of as-deposited films. The SnO and SnO2 phases were identified from their valence band spectra rather than from the Sn 3d core level spectra. Then we studied the damage effects due to the implantation of Pd+ and Ga+ ions in polycrystalline films. The ion bombardment of SnO2 films results in drastic changes of valence-band spectra which is correlated to compositional changes. Annealing in air at 600 °C for 4 h leads to complete recovery of radiation damage. However, after such thermal annealings, the film surface still contains a relatively high amount of SnO (5-10%).
