    Notes: Abstract Previously it has been suggested that the presence of antibodies against dsDNA of the IgA class may define a subset of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients suffering from nephritis and arthritis. Therefore, these autoantibodies were measured in sera of 352 patients with SLE, 81 blood donors, and 189 patients with rheumatoid arthritis using a new ELISA based on human recombinant dsDNA as antigen. IgA anti-dsDNA antibodies were found in 19.9% of the sera from patients with SLE, but in none of the sera from 81 normal controls and 189 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The association of these autoantibodies with 31 clinical and 36 laboratory parameters was calculated. IgA anti-dsDNA antibodies were found to be associated with parameters of disease activity such as elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate and consumption of complement component C3, and the clinical parameters vasculitis, acral necrosis and erythema, but not with nephritis and arthritis. Therefore, IgA anti-dsDNA antibodies define a subset of SLE patients, and monitoring of IgA anti-dsDNA antibodies may be helpful as a prognostic parameter in patients with SLE.

    Notes: Abstract Antibodies against dsDNA of the IgM class were measured in sera of 352 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, 81 blood donors and 189 patients with rheumatoid arthritis using a new ELISA based on human recombinant dsDNA as antigen. IgM anti-dsDNA antibodies were found in 52.3% of the sera from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, but in none of the sera from 81 normal controls and 189 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The association of these autoantibodies with 31 clinical and 37 laboratory parameters was calculated. There was a highly significant negative correlation between IgM anti-dsDNA antibodies and nephritis as well as all the laboratory parameters indicating renal disease (elevated serum creatinine concentration, proteinuria, erythrocyte casts in the urine). IgM anti-dsDNA antibodies indicate protection of lupus patients against the development of lupus nephritis. Further experiments will show whether application of IgM anti-dsDNA antibodies is effective in treating lupus nephritis.

    Notes: Abstract The prevalence and clinical and laboratory associations of IgM, IgG and IgA rheumatoid factors (RF) were determined in 352 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). IgM, IgG, and IgA class RF were detected in 17.9%, 20.5%, and 20.5% of the sera, respectively. RF were associated with sicca syndrome, hypergammaglobulinemia, high titer of antinuclear antibodies, anemia, SSA- and SSB-antibodies, and with the presence of HLA-DR3. RF correlated negatively with nephritis and livedo racemosa. Moreover, we observed an association of RF and parameters of inflammatory activity such as elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and leukopenia. Analysis of immunoglobulin classes revealed that laboratory parameters of inflammatory activity, SSA- and SSB-antibodies and HLA-DR3 correlated with IgA RF only. IgA RF define a subgroup of SLE patients characterized by distinct autoimmune phenomena and high disease activity in the absence of nephritis.

    Description / Table of Contents: Microbial deterioration of materials - fundamentals: Mathematical modelling of destruction mechanismsModern trends in materials science require novel methods and strategies. The general aim is to describe by models the reactions occurring at the surface and within a solid. At the present time, however, it is only possible to derive, from the experimental work, mathematical relations, and this is not sufficient for a prediction of materials behaviour. On the basis of the three steps involved in the description of materials behaviour, i. e. rules of thumb, statistical evaluation of experimental data (including models developed for the presentation of reaction kinetics), and development of physical models (among others Monte Carlo simulations), these three steps and, in particular, the preliminary step of biocorrosion, i. e. biofilm formation, are discussed. Only physical models allow a prediction of reactions, although a prediction independent from experiment is not possible because of the unknown distributions of the acting energies and their possible fluctuations. Beyond that an outline is given of the description of corrosion reactions and crack propagation. A general problem, in particular in connection with biological reactions, is the lack of interdisciplinary education of scientists and engineers.
    Notes: Die moderne Entwicklung der Werkstoffwissenschaft bedingt einen Wandel in den Methoden und Strategien. Es wird angestrebt, die an und im Festkörper ablaufenden Reaktionen in Form von Modellen zu beschreiben. Gegenwärtig gelingt es aber nur, aus experimentellen Untersuchungen mathematische Zusammenhänge abzuleiten, womit eine Vorhersage des Werkstoffverhaltens mit theoretischen Mitteln nicht gelingt.Ausgehend von den drei Erkenntnisstufen zur Beschreibung des Werkstoffverhaltens, den Faustregeln, einer Auswertung von Experimenten mit statistischen Methoden, hierzu gehören auch reaktionskinetische Modellansätze, und der Entwicklung physikalischer Modelle, u.a. Monte-Carlo-Simulationen, werden diese insbesondere für die „Vorstufe“ der biokorrosiven Schädigung vorgestellt, der Biofilmbildng. Nur physikalische Modelle ermöglichen die „Voraussage“ von Reaktionsabläufen, wobei infolge der Unkenntnis der Verteilungen für die wirkenden Energien und deren möglichen Fluktuationen eine vom Experiment getrennte Voraussage nicht möglich ist.In einem Überblick wird darüber hinaus auch auf die Beschreibung von Korrosionsreaktionen und das Rißwachstum eingegangen. Ein generelles Problem, insbesondere im Zusammenhang mit biologischen Reaktionsabläufen, stellt die nicht fachgrenzenübergreifende Ausbildung von Naturwissenschaftlern and Ingenieuren dar.

Von diesen erwies sich das Derivat der Orthosäure als eine charakteristische, nicht schmelzbare Säure, welche im Stande war, sowohl mit Alkalien, als alkalischen Erden Salze zu bilden. Der Abkömmling der Metasäure hingegen schmilzt und besitzt nur schwach saure Eigenschaften; er liefert nur ein Kaliumsalz, während Salze von alkalischen Erden nicht aus ihm erhalten werden konnten.

    Notes: Intensity-fluctuation laser-light-scattering spectroscopy has been used to characterize the temperature dependence of the translational diffusion coefficient through the helix-coil region for the DNA isolated from bacteriophage N1. The diffusion coefficient does not change smoothly, but exhibits fine structure detail similar to that seen in the uv absorption hyperchromicity. These changes are related to the heterogeneous distribution of bases along the N1-DNA chain.
