Notizen: Abstract: The present experimental state of the neutron polarizabilities is discussed. Two possibilities to extract the neutron polarizabilities from experiments are considered: i) quasi-free Compton scattering from the bound neutron and ii) scattering of slow neutrons in the Coulomb field of heavy nuclei. The latter experiments have led to an intense discussion from which we conclude that all attempts to measure the neutron polarizabilities using this method have failed. It is shown that quasi-free Compton scattering from the neutron bound in the deuteron at photon energies from 200 MeV to 300 MeV is the most promising method of measuring the neutron polarizabilities. To arrive at an experimental accuracy of ± 2· 10−4fm3 when extracting the electric polarizability ¯α n , one has to measure the differential cross section in the energy range from 200 MeV to 300 MeV at backward photon scattering angles with a precision of 5%. It is shown that theoretical uncertainties of the method are mainly due to the dependence of the cross section on the selection of multipole analysis of single pion photoproduction. At present they prevent the extraction of ¯α n with an accuracy better than ± 2· 10−4fm3.

Notizen: Abstract Accidental hunting firearm injuries and fatalities (257 cases from 1961 to 1992) were evaluated in detail. Most persons responsible for the accident were more than 40 years old and experienced in hunting, and 26% of the gunshot wounds were fatal. In 77% of cases the victim was shot by another person and in 23% the wound was self-inflicted. The firearms/ammunition used were pellets from shotguns (63%), bullets from rifles (31%), shotgun slugs (3.5%) and bullets from handguns (2.5%). In 22% of all accidents from pellets severe eyeball injuries were involved, and 38% of the wounds were caused from a distance of 5 m or less, including all self-inflicted injuries. The most frequent factors responsible for the accident were: improper handling of the firearm (37%), failure to notice the victim (24.1%), covering the victim while swinging on the game (14.8%), ricocheting projectiles (13.6%), inadequate storage of the firearm (11.7%) and mistaking the victim for game (9.3%). In some cases more than one factor contributed to the accident. Defective firearm/ammunition, as the only non-human factor, was involved in only 1.6% of accidents. Some aspects of the prevention and the forensic investigation of hunting accidents are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract: The photoproduction of two neutral pions from the deuteron has been studied for incident photon energies from 200 MeV to 820 MeV with the TAPS spectrometer at MAMI (Mainz Microtron). The total cross-section was determined and used to deduce the cross-section from the neutron. Due to the good statistical quality of the data Dalitz plots for the three particles in the exit channel (π0π0 N) could be constructed. The invariant mass distributions derived from them are presented in this paper. They indicate that the important reaction mechanism in the second resonance region is a sequential decay pattern involving the population of the Δ(1232)-resonance as an intermediate state.

Notizen: Abstract: Double neutral pion photoproduction from the proton has been measured at MAMI for photon energies between threshold and 820 MeV. The reaction was identified by an invariant mass and missing mass analysis. From threshold up to 370 MeV the total cross-section does not exceed 30 nb. For higher energies it shows a smooth rise until it reaches a maximum of about 10 μb at E γ = 740 MeV. Dalitz plots of m 2(π0π0) versus m 2(p,π0) for seven bins of incident photon energy have been analysed. For E γ 〉 610 MeV, a strong contribution of a sequential decay is observed with the Δ(1232)-resonance as intermediate state. A comparison to model calculations shows that these sequential decays presumably originate from the D 13(1520) and also the P 11(1440)-resonance.
