Notes: Abstract  The fibrogenic and cytotoxic potential of coal mine dust is independent of the amount of quartz and other inorganic parameters. Results of coal petrographical and organic geochemical investigations of coals and coal mine dust from the Ruhr and Ibbenbüren Region of Germany demonstrate variations of organic dust amount possibly influencing these noxious properties. Coal mine dust of high rank coals is characterized by a pronounced fibrogenic risk. This risk, independent of the quantity of quartz, is probably based on shape variations of different coal macerals. With increasing coalification of the corresponding seam, the vitrinite is enriched in its dust; however, lower concentrations have been determined for inertinite. Vitrinite shows constant shapes and sizes independent of the rank of coal. Inertinite particles with elongated to fibrous shapes tend to larger sizes with increasing coalification. Strikingly, coal mine dust from miners' lungs with high degrees of coal mine workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) is enriched in inertinite. In contrast, high cytotoxicities in cell tests are known for coal mine dust from low coalified coals. High concentrations of phenolic compounds can be extracted by dichloromethane from low coalified coal mine dust. These compounds, which are characterized by a high water solubility and therefore high bioavailability, explain the high cytotoxicities of coal mine dust. Contamination of dust by diesel emissions in the coal mine can act as additionally supporting parameters for extended cytotoxicities.

Notes: Summary The effect of cimetidine treatment, 1 g daily over 6 days, on the disposition of theophylline was studied in nine patients with liver cirrhosis and in nine patients without liver disease. Plasma elimination half-life tended to increase from 14.6±8.2 h to 24.3±14.1 h in the cirrhotic patients (P〉0.05) and from 8.3±4.2 h to 10.3±4.1 h in the control patients (P〈0.05). Total plasma clearance decreased from 0.50±0.23 ml/kg/min to 0.41±0.21 ml/kg/min (P〈0.05) in the cirrhotics and from 0.77±0.34 ml/kg/min to 0.58±0.18 ml/kg/min (P〈0.05) in the controls. Pretreatment clearance values were also significantly reduced in the cirrhosis group. No change was observed in the volume of distribution of theophylline. The degree of inhibition of theophylline metabolism did not depend on whether the patients were smokers, or whether they had low pretreatment clearance values. In liver cirrhosis, inhibition of drug metabolism by cimetidine varies widely and is unpredictable in the individual patient.

Notes: Abstract. One of the major goals in physical chemistry is to obtain a microscopic understanding of chemical reactions. Recent developments in femtosecond laser techniques provide the opportunity to resolve the timescale of elementary steps of chemical reactions at surfaces. This is exemplified for the femtosecond laser-induced oxidation of CO on Ru(001). Among other adsorbate-specific probes vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy offers the possibility to monitor adsorbates or reaction intermediates directly at the surface. Recently, we have employed this technique to investigate the dynamics of the CO-stretch vibration of CO adsorbed on Ru(001) after optical excitation leading to CO desorption.

Notes: Abstract. The effect of aminophylline on cerebral blood volume and oxidative metabolism in newborn infants was investigated with near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Thirteen mechanically ventilated premature infants who received aminophylline to facilitate weaning from the respirator were selected. Gestational age ranged between 26 and 34 weeks, postnatal age between 1 and 7 days and birth weight between 760 and 2300 g. A bolus of 6 mg aminophylline/kg body weight was infused within 2 min. NIRS was performed continuously across the head to monitor changes in cerebral blood volume and cytochrome c oxidase. Heart rate, transcutaneous carbon dioxide tension (tcpCO2) and arterial haemoglobin oxygen saturation (SO2) were recorded simultaneously. The infusion of aminophylline was associated with an increase in heart rate (median 12, interquartile range 5 – 20 beats per min, P=0.0004) and a drop in tcpCO2 (median −0.4, interquartile range −0.1 to −0.5 kPa, P=0.015). Oxygen saturation remained stable (±3%). A decrease in cerebral blood volume was measured with NIRS in 9/13 patients (median −0.15 ml/100 g brain tissue, interquartile range +0.08 to −0.28, P=0.10). Oxidized cytochrome c oxidase decreased in 11/13 patients (median −0.27 µmol/l, interquartile range −0.19 to −0.44, P=0.01). Our findings demonstrate an immediate step-response of heart rate and tcpCO2 to aminophylline in premature infants. The simultaneous reduction of cytochrome c oxidase in the brain cannot be explained as a consequence of changes in tcpCO2 or changes in cerebral blood volume. We therefore speculate that aminophylline interferes directly with cerebral metabolism.

Notes: Abstract The study concentrates on estimating the magnitude of the effect of a single risk factor, maximum total serum bilirubin (TSB) in excess of 400 μmol/l (23.4 mg/dl), on the neurodevelopmental outcome of 50, singleton, Zimbabwean neonates at 1 year of age. At 1 year corrected age the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID) was administered. Two infants died and five were lost to follow up. TSB was neither associated with birth weight nor with gestational age. Of 43 infants with a TSB 〉400 μmol/l (23.4 mg/dl),11(26%) scored abnormal on the BSID at 1 year of age and 5 (12%) infants developed the choreo-athetoid type of cerebral palsy. Conclusion Infants with bilirubin levels between 400 and 500 μmol/l (23.4 and 29.2 mg/dl) who scored abnormal or suspect on the Bayley Scales of Infant Development were preterm or had haemolytic disease. All term infants without haemolysis and with bilirubin levels between 400 and 500 μmol/l (23.4 mg/dl–29.2 mg/dl) were normal at 1 year of age.
