Notizen: Summary The effect of dopamine during barbiturate therapy was investigated in 29 cats including 5 sham-operated cats. According to Kiersey's classification of electro-encephalographic patterns, physiological variables, cerebral metabolic rates for oxygen and glucose, cerebral blood flow (CBF), and intracranial pressure (ICP), etc. were evaluated in each electro-encephalographic pattern. Oxygen-glucose index was calculated and used as an indicator for aerobic or anaerobic metabolism of glucose. Group 1 (12 cats), to which only thiamylal was administered, maintained aerobic glycolysis due to a parallel reduction of cerebral metabolic rates for oxygen and glucose (about half of the initial value at Kiersey's fifth pattern) in spite of reduction of CBF and mean arterial blood pressure (MABP). Group 2 (12 cats), to which dopamine was administered in addition to thiamylal due to a reduction of MABP, showed anaerobic glycolysis though MABP and CBF were maintained. These findings are ascribed to an increase of cerebral metabolic rate for glucose up to 130% of the initial value though cerebral metabolic rate for oxygen decreased down to half of the initial value: The beneficial effect of barbiturate on cerebral metabolism was reduced by use of dopamine. ICP was reduced in both groups. Our result indicates that administration of extracellular fluid may be preferable for treatment of hypotension during barbiturate therapy than dopamine medication.

Notizen: Summary The effect of barbiturates on the cerebral haemodynamics and the influence of dopamine on barbiturates were investigated using 20 cats, and clinical indication of barbiturate therapy is discussed. Cerebral blood flow, oxygen extraction fraction, and cerebro-vascular resistance as well as physiological variables were evaluated at various concentrations of barbiturates in the blood. Thiamylal caused simultaneous reduction of mean arterial blood pressure and cerebral blood flow. As the disruption of autoregulation proceeded, cerebro-vascular resistance and oxygen extraction fraction increased till the barbiturate-induced coma stage. Furthermore, cerebro-vascular resistance increased much more markedly by the combined use of dopamine. Clinically, our results indicate barbiturates would increase cerebral circulatory disturbances caused by vasospasm following subarachnoid haemorrhage because barbiturates further increase cerebro-vascular resistance. Then again, the combined use of dopamine is not preferable because of deterioration in vasospasm.

Notizen: The effect of ionic strength on the structure of Cu(II) complexes of imidazole and poly(4(5)-vinylimidazole) in aqueous solution was studied by viscometric, spectrophotometric, and electron spin resonance (ESR) techniques. Frequency of the center of the absorption band in visible region (λmax) and ESR spectra of the polymeric Cu(II) complex were different from those of the low-molecular-weight Cu(II) complex. The spectra of polymeric Cu(II) complex were different in the presence of sodium perchlorate, but it was not the case for the low-molecular-weight Cu(II) complex. The reduced viscosity of the polymeric Cu(II) complex and the polymeric ligand decreased with a rise of the concentration of sodium perchlorate. It was proposed that the conformational change in the polymeric ligand resulted in a structural change of the Cu(II). poly(4(5)-vinylimidazole) complex.

Notizen: Thermal and mesogenic properties of semirigid polyamides composed of one benzene ring with a kinked linkage and various aliphatic chains in the repeating unit, which are derived from three 1,3-diaminobenzenes and aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, were examined. Only two polyamides with a long aliphatic chain (C18H36), based on 4-methyl- and 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3-diaminobenzenes, form mesophases although the polymers exert nontraditional mesogenic units. Formation of the mesophase in the latter case depends on the inherent viscosity, i.e., polymers with lower inherent viscosity (≤1,47 dL/g) form a layered structure by intermolecular interaction via hydrogen bonding of the amide linkage.

Notizen: The Cu(II) complexes of copolymers having pendant sulfide and imidazolyl groups were prepared by a free radical copolymerization of ethylvinylsulfide with vinylimidazole, and their properties and function were studied spectrophotometrically in comparison with those of poly[4(5)-vinylimidazole]. The complexes were found to be effective as catalysts for the oxidation of hydroquinone. Visible and ESR spectra of the Cu(II)-copolymer complexes were similar to those of the Cu(II)-homopolymer complexes, while the catalytic activity for the oxidation was different between these complex systems. A rapid reaction followed by a slow reaction, particularly at high ethylvinylsulfide content in the copolymers, was observed in the Cu(II)-copolymer complex systems, but a continuous reaction proportional to the reaction time was observed in the Cu(II)-homopolymer complex systems. The reoxidation rate of Cu(I) to Cu(II) complex, which was little affected by the concentration of imidazolyl group, decreased with a rise of the ethylvinylsulfide content in the copolymer. It was suggested that the sulfur atom of the sulfide group was weakly coordinated to Cu(II) but strongly to Cu(I), and an electron transfer reaction from substrate to the Cu(II) complex was increased, while reoxidation reaction of the Cu(I) complex was decreased in the copolymer complex systems.

Notizen: Oxidation of hydroquinone catalyzed by copper(II) complexes of poly-1-vinylimidazole, vinylamine-vinylacetamide copolymer, and polyethyleneimine was studied in aqueous solution at 25°C. The rate of oxidation was determined spectrophotometrically over several pH values. The rate of copper(II) reduction was evaluated from copper(I)-cuproin complex formation, and the reoxidation of copper(I) to copper(II) was observed by visible spectroscopy. Among the copper(II) complexes, poly-1-vinylimidazole complex exhibited excellent catalytic activity, which amounted to over 20 times that of aqueous copper(II) ion solution, while the reduction of copper(II) in the former system was slower than that in the latter system. The reoxidation of copper(I) to copper(II) was found to be completed immediately in the presence of polymer ligands such as poly-1-vinylimidazole, while copper(I) ion was only slowly reoxidized. The discussion of the reaction mechanism emphasizes the importance of the reoxidation process.

Notizen: The autoxidation of Cu(I) complexes with imidazole and polyvinylimidazole derivatives was studied by observing the formation of the corresponding Cu(II) complexes with a stopped-flow technique. The reaction was second order and proportional to the concentrations of Cu(I) and oxygen. In the Cu(I)-imidazole complex pH variation was without effect in the range of 7.5-8.6. The oxidation rate of Cu(I).polyvinylimidazole complexes, on the other hand, decreased with a rise in pH. The activation parameters of the Cu(I)·polyvinylimidazole complexes, compared with those of the Cu(I).imidazole complex, were characterized by large enthalpic requirements coupled with favorable entropies of activation. This was explained by the fact that a conformational change in the polymeric ligands took place during oxidation.
