    Notes: Summary An association between the incidence of childhood Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus and the average yearly temperature in different countries has been reported, the incidence being higher in countries with a lower mean temperature. We have studied the effect of environmental temperature on the incidence of diabetes in an animal model of Type 1 diabetes, the non-obese diabetic (NOD) mouse. Female NOD mice were divided at weaning, with one group placed at a higher temperature (mean 23.7±1.7° C) and the other at a lower temperature (21.0±1.8° C). At 20 weeks of age 6 of 16 mice at lower temperature and 1 of 17 mice at higher temperature had developed diabetes (p 〈 0.02); at 30 weeks 10 of 16 and 5 of 17 mice had developed diabetes (p 〈 0.05). Non-diabetic animals in the low temperature group had a higher food intake than those in the high temperature group between 13–15 weeks of age (28.0±1.2 g/week vs 24.8± 0.7 g/week, P 〈 0.05). In a parallel experiment, histological examination showed that there were similar degrees of insulitis in the high and low temperature groups at seven weeks of age. We conclude that environmental temperature can affect the incidence of diabetes in the NOD mouse and that this may be related to alterations in food intake.

    Notes: Summary Basal insulin secretion was compared in nine islet-cell antibody positive, non-diabetic first-degree relatives of children with Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus and nine normal control subjects matched for age, sex and weight. Acute insulin responses to a 25 g intravenous glucose tolerance test were similar in the two groups (243 (198–229) vs 329 (285–380) mU·l−1·10min−1, mean (±SE), p=0.25). Fasting plasma insulin was assayed in venous samples taken at one min intervals for 2 h. Time series analysis was used to demonstrate oscillatory patterns in plasma insulin. Autocorrelation showed that regular oscillatory activity was generally absent in the islet-cell antibody positive group, whereas a regular 13 min cycle was shown in control subjects (p〈 0.0001). Fourier transformation did, however, show a 13 min spectral peak in the islet-cell antibody positive group, consistent with intermittent pulsatility. We conclude that overall oscillatory patters of basal insulin secretion are altered in islet-cell antibody positive subjects even when the acute insulin response is within the normal range.

    Notes: Abstract The γ-radiation following single and double neutron capture in isotopically enriched62Ni was studied at the high flux reactor of the Institut Laue-Langevin, using a pair and Compton suppressed germanium detector. Measurements before and after 170 d of breeding were performed. The γ-ray fluxes through63Ni and64Ni are discussed; several new levels and spin-parity assignments were found. On the basis of the known discrete levels and the low-energy neutron resonances, level density parameters were determined within the Constant Temperature Fermi Gas model. The neutron binding energies were measured asB n (63Ni)=6837.92(18) keV andB n (64Ni)=9657.64(24) keV. The63Ni (n, γ) cross section for reactor neutrons was measured to be σ=20 −2 +5 b.

The neutron binding energies were determined asB n (59Ni)=8999.15(23) keV and Bn(61Ni)=7820.07(20) keV; some 95% of the totalγ-ray fluxes through59,61Ni were assigned.     Notes: The combination of supercritical fluid extraction, high resolution capillary supercritical fluid chromatography, and Fourier transform infrared microspectrometry is described for the separation and identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a coal tar pitch. The variable solvating power of the supercritical fluid was utilized to selectively fractionate the sample. The fluid extract was decompressed through a frit restrictor into the sample cavity of a cooled microvalve injector, where the analytes were deposited and concentrated for subsequent chromatographic analysis. Several of the analytes separated in the chromatograph were collected on a potassium bromide disc at a solvent elimination inter-face for subsequent infrared analysis involving the use of an infra-red microscope accessory. The spectra obtained show the power of this detection technique for distinguishing between isomers.

    Notes: The FT-Raman vibrational spectrum of a child's deciduous exfoliated tooth has been analysed and the spectral features assigned to hydroxyapatite and protein. Comparisons made with older teeth from a Romano-British burial site (∼ 2k years) and fossilised animal teeth (∼ 1 M-70 M years) indicate that the organic protein component has disappeared with interment, whereas spectroscopic features due to the inorganic phosphatic matrix are common to all samples, modern and ancient. The application of the technique to the non-destructive analysis of archaeological samples and the recording of spectra from interred samples without detriment from fluorescent material is demonstrated. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Die Zählvorrichtung wird benutzt zur Untersuchung des Einflusses von Eisen-II-Sulfatzusatz als Inhibitor in Kühlwasser für Kondensatorrohre aus Messing. Aufgrund der Ergebnisse führt these Behandlung zur Bildung einer FeOOH-Schicht auf der inneren Rohroberfläche; die genaue Zusammensetzung der Schicht unterscheidet sich geringfügig je nach den örtlichen Verhältnissen.
    Notes: The construction is described of a simple counter for measuring the conversion electron Mössbauer spectrum of the inside surface of a tube. The counter is used to investigate the effects of adding ferrous sulphate to the cooling water of condensers with brass tubes to inhibit corrosion. It is concluded that the treatment leads to the formation on the inside of the tube of a layer of FeOOH, the exact nature of which depends slightly on the local conditions.
