Notes: Summary The aim of this population-based, one-to-one matched-pair case-control study was to evaluate the factors concerning the markedly increased risk for dying among Japanese subjects with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) from a social and behavioural perspective. The study was based on the population-based cohort of IDDM subjects in the Diabetes Epidemiology Research International Mortality Study. We studied 90 cases who died and 90 living control subjects, selected from the rest of the cohort, who were matched for sex, birth year, year of diagnosis and duration of diabetes. Socioeconomic and behavioural status were surveyed through a questionnaire. Conditional logistic regression analyses based on 55 respondent pairs revealed that the better educated patients (year of completing education: odds ratio =0.66) who kept the same physician (number of times a patient changed physician: odds ratio =2.77) and who attended a clinic specializing in diabetes (attendance at university hospital clinic: odds ratio =0.18) injecting insulin several times a day (number of injections, odds ratio =0.31) and more frequently attending the clinic (≥ 12 times per year, odds ratio =0.23) were at substantially lower risk of death. The results begin to profile the patients with the highest risk of dying who could be identified earlier and undergo intervention treatment.

Notes: Summary The aim of this study was to evaluate the geographic variation in mortality among individuals with youth-onset insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) across the world. The study was based on the currently available IDDM incidence and mortality data. Mortality data for diabetes in the 0–24 year age group were obtained from World Health Organization (WHO) statistics. The mortality rates were adjusted for the frequency of occurrence of IDDM by dividing the mortality rates by the IDDM incidence rates which were obtained from the WHO DiaMond project. There was a more than 10-fold geographic variation in mortality between the developed countries and Eastern European populations. The areas with the highest mortality rates were located in Japan, Eastern Europe and Russia. The areas having the best outcome associated with IDDM were Northern Europe, Central Europe, and Canada. An ecological study demonstrated a relationship between the incidence-adjusted mortality (estimated case-fatality) with IDDM incidence itself (Spearman's correlation coefficient = –0.45) as well as infant mortality and life expectancy at birth. These data demonstrated the possibility of an enormous geographic variation in mortality of youth-onset diabetic patients even in developed countries. It is important to note that these excess deaths are potentially preventable. The ecological study also suggested that the mortality differences may be in part related to overall and diabetes related care. [Diabetologia (1997) 40: 212–216]

Notes: New resist systems based on acid-catalyzed, electrophilic aromatic substitution are described. These new resists show high sensitivity to deep UV and E-beam radiation with values approaching 2 mJ/cm2 and 2 μC/cm2, respectively. The resists are based on a three component system consisting of poly(4-hydroxystyrene), a polyfunctional, low molecular weight, latent electrophile, and a photoactive onium salt used as an acid generator. Irradiation of the resist film produces a latent image of acid dispersed in the matrix. During the postbaking step the photo-generated acid reacts with the latent polyfunctional electrophile and releases a reactive carbocationic intermediate with concomitant liberation of acetic acid. The carbocationic intermediate then reacts with neighboring phenolic moieties in a crosslinking reaction. The substitution reaction liberates a proton, making the process catalytic in nature, thus incorporating the concept of chemical amplification. These highly sensitive materials can be used as nonswelling negative multipurpose resists that function in deep-UV, x-ray or E-beam modes. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Commercial cellulase preparations from Trichoderma viride and Aspergillus niger were immobilized on porous silica glass and ceramics such as alumina and titania with titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) and on their silanized derivatives with glutaraldehyde (GLUT). The amounts of the immobilized enzymes were in the range 10-50 mg/g carrier (dry) depending on the kind of carrier and immobilization method. Their activities toward carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), xylan, aryl-β-glucoside, and aryl-β-xyloside were 3-53% of those of the native enzymes. The optimum pH of the enzymes shifted to the acidic side in most cases, whereas the optimum temperatures were nearly the same as those of native ones. The activity of immobilized enzyme preparations towards CMC did not change significantly during continuous operation over a periods of 60 days. Finally, xylan was hydrolyzed with the immobilized enzymes, and the sugars formed were investigated.

Notes: The baculovirus/insect cell system (Autographa californica multiple nuclear polyhedrosis virus/Spodoptera frugiperda Sf9 cells) was used to express the GPI-anchored human melanoma tumor antigen, melanotransferrin or p97. This system served to study the expression and productivity of recombinant GPI-anchored p97 by insect cells. The Sf9 cells expressed a cell surface GPI-anchored form of p97 as well as a soluble form of p97 that did not appear to be derived from the GPI-anchored form of p97. Both recombinant forms, although Endo H resistant, migrated slightly faster (∼88 kDa) than the native p97 (∼95-97 kDa). The insect GPI-anchored p97 was sensitive to PI-PLC, which exposed a detectable cross-reacting determinant. The Sf9 cell surface p97 expression was similar to that of human melanoma (SK-MEL-28) cells, whereas the Sf9 cell specific secretion rate was 10-fold higher. Also Sf9 cells retained considerably higher levels of p97 within the cell. The Sf9 cell surface expression of p97 varied with time after infection, with the maximum expression, which appeared independent of multiplicities of infection greater than 1, occurring at 48 h. After 48 h, levels of cell surface and secreted p97 fell whereas p97 retained within the cell increased, which possibly reflected the lytic nature of the expression system. The successful expression of GPI-anchored human p97 by the baculovirus/insect cell system not only provides a source of p97 for further research but also is the basis of an alternative method for the commercial production of GPI-anchored proteins. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
