Notizen: summary  The purpose of this study is the objective and quantitative evaluation of masticatory laterality and its daily variability. Various foods with different textures were used to investigate whether food texture influenced masticatory laterality. Ten healthy subjects and seven foods were used. Recordings of chewing movements were repeated three times at intervals of 1 week. Masticatory laterality was assessed with an Asymmetry Index [AI: (number of right side strokes – number of left side strokes)/number of total strokes]. Medians and ranges of the three recordings were calculated. The observed AI ranges in the three trials were limited with the exception of two subjects. Among the other subjects, averages of the absolute values of the medians were from 32·5 to 73·4%. Statistically significant differences between the hardest food and softer foods were observed in absolute value of AI medians. Masticatory laterality could be evaluated by an AI. Eight of 10 subjects showed limited ranges of AI in three recordings. It should be noted that a few people actually chew on either side but might chew on one side only on a particular day. Hard food evoked more masticatory laterality, and seemed more appropriate for laterality examinations.

Notizen: Abstract  The Stvb-i gene confers stripe disease resistance to rice. For positional cloning, we constructed a physical map spanning 1.8-cM distance between flanking markers, consisting of 18 bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clones, around the Stvb-i locus on rice chromosome 11. The 18 clones were isolated by screening a BAC library derived from a japonica cultivar, Shimokita, with three Stvb-i-linked RFLP markers and DraI-digested DNAs of a yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) clone. The results of Southern hybridization and restriction enzyme analyses indicated that these BAC clones are contiguous and cover about a 700-kb region containing the Stvb-i allele. Utilizing end and internal fragments of the BAC insert DNAs, 33 molecular markers were generated within a small chromosomal region including the Stvb-i locus. Genotyping analysis with these markers for a resistant cultivar and four nearby recombinants selected from 120 F2 individuals indicated that Stvb-i is contained within an approximately 286-kb region covered with two overlapping BAC clones.

Notizen: Abstract Nanometer-sized spherical hematite single crystals were prepared by heating the precipitate which was synthesized from Fe(OH)(CH3COO)2 and NaOH in alkaline ethanol-water solutions without the deliberate addition of surfactants or adsorbing ligands. Hematite nanocrystals (5–10 nm in diameter) and ferrihydrite (〈5 nm) were obtained from the mixture of H2O/EtOH (Rs) = 100 ml/100 ml as a initial medium, whereas goethite, hematite (20–40 nm), and ferrihydrite were precipitated at Rs = 200/0. Adsorbing ligands such as acetoxy groups and ethanol on particles retarded the hematite growth and goethite formation. TEM observation of the particles prepared at Rs = 100/100 with heat treatment at 400°C for 2 hours showed them consisting of single spherical hematite crystals 22 nm in mean diameter with narrow size distribution. Various individual effects were investigated for their contributions to crystal structure and size of precipitates; they included NaOH to Fe(OH)(CH3COO)2 ratio, solvent, dropping rate of alkaline solution, and aging time.

Notizen: Abstract Eu2+-doped inorganic-organic hybrid materials, which are potentially suitable for a tunable laser in the near ultra violet and blue region, were prepared through the photoreduction of Eu3+ ions in the materials under the irradiation of the fourth harmonic wave light (266 nm) of the Nd:YAG laser. The hybrid materials doped with Eu3+ ions were prepared from Si(OCH3)4, CH3Si(OCH3)3, EuCl3 and chloropropyltrimethoxysilane (CPTM). After the prehydrolized silica sol was added to the Eu3+-containing solution, Eu3+-doped transparent inorganic-organic hybrid material was obtained by drying at 50°C. The emission peak around 450–475 nm due to the charge transfer transition (5d-4f) of Eu2+ ions increased with the laser irradiation time. Eu3+ ions were effectively photoreduced to Eu2+ ions in pore-free materials prepared at high CPTM to Eu3+ ratios. Eu2+ ions were generated by the photodecomposition of the bond between Eu3+ and Cl (Cl− or Cl(CH2)3 in CPTM).
