Notes: Carbon nitride films were synthesized on Si(100) substrate using relatively high-pressure radio-frequency magnetron sputtering of a graphite target in a nitrogen ambient. The influences of the substrate temperature and pressure on deposition rate and the film composition ratio N/C and C–N bonding were investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The deposition rate had a maximum in the investigated pressure region and reduced as the substrate temperature increased. XPS spectra showed that the deposited films were very large N/C value up to 1.20, and unchanged after thermal treatment up to about 900 K, the latter confirmed by FTIR. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report the use of substituted main-chain poly-carbazoles as hole and electron transporting polymers for electroluminescence (EL) applications. The polymers are soluble in common organic solvents and high quality thin films are obtained by spin coating method. A single layer of hole or electron transfer devices with indium tin oxide anode and aluminum cathode shows current densities up to 40–50 mA/cm2, respectively, but no visible emission from either layer. Double-layer structures combining the hole and electron transfer polymers show strong emission originated from the electron transfer layer. The peak of double-layer EL spectrum is about 30 nm redshifted to the peak of corresponding photoluminescence spectrum, which may be due to the formation of an exciplex between the two layers. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A transient photocurrent measurement with a zero-field time-of-flight configuration was carried out on ITO/ZnO/CdS(n-type)/Cu(In,Ga)Se2(p-type, Eg=1.15 eV)/Mo/glass solar cell to get the information about the minority carrier transport on the Cu(In,Ga)Se2 film. The transient photocurrent was recorded after the incidence of a subnanosecond pulse light (500 nm wavelength) from the back side through the Mo thin film (〈0.5 μm). The analysis of the transient photocurrent was conducted by using the time-dependent diffusion current equation. Consequently, the values of 1.0 cm2/s, 100 ns, and 103 cm/s as the diffusion coefficient, the minority carrier lifetime, and the recombination velocity in the Cu(In,Ga)Se2/Mo interface, respectively, were obtained on the Cu(In,Ga)Se2 film. These data corresponded to the electron beam induced current line profile data, and the experimental data of J0, analyzed by current–voltage characteristics. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report the synthesis of stable nanometer-size silver-coated polydiacetylene (PDA) particles. At first, an ethanol solution of diacetylene (DA) is dispersed into a Ag+ ion containing aqueous solution. Silver ions are attracted to –CCO− anions of DA, then monomer DA vesicles coated by silver ions are formed by a long-term ultrasonication treatment. The monomer DA vesicles are photopolymerized and the silver ions are photo-reduced simultaneously to form coated composite particles. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Eosinophils were isolated by the three methods of CD16-negative depletion: 1) magnetic beads, 2) fluorescence-activated cell sorter (FACS), and 3) complement reaction. Their purity, yield, and viability were compared. The second procedure produced well purity and viability (94.65 ± 1.51% and 94.98 ± 1.40%, respectively) but low yield of eosinophils (65.47 ± 2.47%). The viability of cells obtained by the third procedure was not efficient (80.83 ± 2.85%), while the purity and the yield were efficient (96.23 ± 1.09% and 90.75 ± 1.72%, respectively). In conclusion, the magnetic beads method (purity: 98.02 ± 0.45%, yield: 91.05 ± 2.43%, viability: 97.57 ± 0.37%) was the most advantageous of these three procedures. Moreover, in the functional assay, radical oxygen products from eosinophils isolated by the procedure with complement reaction were less than with the magnetic beads or FACS procedures.

Notes: Abstract  Rainfall and its infiltration into a slope is one of the most important factors affecting slope stability in a monsoon region. To understand the infiltration process, changes in the apparent resistivity within a slope in southern Kyushu, Japan, have been measured using automated electric prospecting. The slope studied is underlain by Quaternary weak and permeable pyroclastic flow deposits. Resistivity data obtained over a six month period indicate that the conditions within the slope vary and a distinct time lag is recognised between the rainfall event and the change in resistivity. At near surface depths the response is rapid and large. At lower depths it is slower and smaller, but the effects may be cumulative.

Notes: Abstract. In this article we exhibit a relation between the number k(B) of ordinary irreducible characters in a p-block B of a finite group G and the Cartan invariants c ij of B. Next, we give a lower bound of the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue $\rho (C_B)$ of the Cartan matrix C B of B in terms of B, that is $k(B) \le \rho (C_B)l(B)$ , where l(B) is the number of irreducible Brauer characters in B. For p-solvable groups, we conjecture $k(B) \le \rho (C_B)$ that is closely related to the Brauer's k(B) conjecture.

Notes: Abstract  11C-methionine positron emission tomography (PET) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) staining were performed in 13 cases of glioma to investigate the relationship between the uptake of l-[methyl]-11C-methionine and the degree of malignancy and proliferative potential. The 11C-methionine uptake was significantly greater in high-grade gliomas compared to low-grade gliomas (P〈0.05). The PCNA indexes were also significantly higher in the high-grade cases (P〈0.05). Moreover, a strong positive correlation was found between the 11C-methionine values and the PCNA indexes (P〈0.005), demonstrating that higher 11C-methionine uptake was associated with greater proliferative potential and greater malignancy. 11C-methionine PET is a potentially useful preoperative method to discriminate the malignacy of glioma.
