Notes: Hole-trap states in the gate oxide of a Si metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) are investigated by inhomogeneous excimer laser irradiation. Subbandgap ultraviolet light photons with an energy exceeding a threshold lying between 5.5 and 6.4 eV were found to excite electrons from these originally neutral states into the SiO2 conduction band. A fixed positive charge is left behind. The degradation in MOSFET performance due to the irradiation is comparable to that accompanying hot-hole injection. Also, subsequent hot-electron stress changes the device characteristics in a way similar to hot-electron stress following hot-hole stress. It is concluded that the traps responsible for hot-carrier degradation cause the optically induced charge trapping.

Notes: Measurement of diode photocurrent represents a new method for obtaining extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) information specific to the junction region of a diode. EXAFS measurements at Ga and As K edges of an aluminum-on-GaAs Schottky diode have been used to demonstrate this new technique. The spectra observed in the diode current arise mainly from x-ray absorption events within 2 μm of the diode junction, i.e., within a minority carrier diffusion length of the approximately 600-A(ring)-wide depletion region. The diode current EXAFS are consistent with EXAFS obtained from fluorescence measurements.

Notes: Summary To date there have been no results published on qualitative and quantitative time-related changes with regard to desiccation of human fingertips post mortem. The fingertips of 52 hands from 36 corpses were qualitatively examined soon after death (2–6 h) to 120 h post mortem. The quantitative investigations were confined to the tips of the middle fingers. The width of three adjoining ridges of the skin was measured in four defined areas of the middle fingertips, and photographs were taken at intervals of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 20, 26, 32, 44, 50, 60, 72, 84, 96 and 120 h p.m. Concerning the qualitative test results, four time-related stages were classified macroscopically and by a pocket lens (×25). Desiccation stage IV correlates to the period 72 h after death in bodies found in apartments. Besides the rough, wrinkled, and brown or black surface of the fingertips, microwrinkles of the epidermis occur on the skin ridges, which have so far not been described. The quantitative results did not show any changes in the width of the skin ridges, independent of age, sex, right or left hand.

Notes: Summary Hepatic hemorrhages are not unusual after sharp or blunt abdominal traumata. They are of particular interest when deadly hepatic hemorrhages are under discussion as the single or contributory cause of death in forensic investigations, for instance after reanimation or acts of violence. The test results in rabbits demonstrate that artificial and specific enzyme-assimilation conditions can cause atraumatic hepatic hemorrhages in only a few days. With and without concomitant injuries, liver bleeding may have an atraumatic genesis. An additional human case report shows the possibility of confusion with atraumatic rhexis hemorrhage in the liver.

Notes: Summary Previous investigations on calvarial fractures in infants have shown that the flexibility and displacement of the infant calvarial are not sufficient to avoid fractures as a result of fall. From a table height onto hard ground — and in special cases, fractures cannot be avoided even after falls onto softly cushioned ground. The skull fractures are located in paper-thin, transparent, single-layer bone areas without diploe. The results of previous literature were compared with investigations of the skulls of 82 infants (from neonates up to infants 14 months of age). Congenital fissures, cranioschisis, locally retarded ossification in the cranium and craniotabes are all weak points where fracture has a tendency to occur even if the impact is minor. These ossification defects are increased in the ossa parietalia, but can also be found in the os frontale or in the os occipitale. The location is not always the same but can be detected by locating the skull transparency using diaphanoscopy.
