    Notes: Until now, the origin of hard magnetic properties of rapidly quenched Nd-Fe-B alloys with lower Nd concentration is not clear. In this paper, the phase compositions of rapidly quenched Nd4Fe77.5B18.5 alloys annealed under different conditions have been studied by using zero-field spin-echo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Mössbauer effect (ME) techniques. It is found that there exists a certain amount of Nd2Fe14B phase in the samples annealed at 960 °C and ingot alloy, which have poor hard magnetic properties; while, the sample annealed under optimal condition consists only of bct-Fe3B as the main phase and a small amount of a-Fe. However, the ME result indicates that about 5 at. % Fe atoms in FeIII (8 g) site of bct-Fe3B have been replaced by Nd atoms; the NMR result demonstrates that 11B NMR spectrum is the characteristic peak of bct-Fe3B, but it broadens asymmetrically to the high frequency side, which is due to the bct-Fe3B influenced by Nd atoms. The amplitude of radio frequency (rf) excitation field required to get the maximum 11B spin-echo signal from bct-Fe3B in the sample annealed at 839 °C is only about one third as much as that required to excite the 11B in the bct-Fe3B influenced by Nd atoms in the sample annealed at 670 °C for a short time, which implies the latter has a larger coercivity field than the former. It is concluded that the origin of hard magnetic properties of Nd4Fe77.5B18.5 alloy is not related to the 2:14:1 phase, but to the change of bct-Fe3B itself.

    Notes: We report the effect of conversion conditions on the device characteristics of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) light-emitting diodes. Both electroluminescence and photoluminescence intensities decrease with increasing degree of conversion. Partial conjugation enhances the electroluminescence intensity and gives an efficiency (with Ca as electron-injecting contact) as high as 0.75% photons per electron, about two orders of magnitude more efficient than from similar devices prepared from fully converted PPV. The results of constant current stress measurements suggest that the partially conjugated PPV diode is relatively stable at room temperature.

    Notes: The Fe–B amorphous alloys powders with high boron concentration can be prepared by borohydride reduction (BHR). By adjusting technological factors, the Fe100−xBx amorphous powders with compositions ranging from x=17 to 40 can be easily obtained, but it is difficult to make the amorphous ribbons with such a high B concentration by using rapidly quenched technique, which can usually obtain the amorphous ribbons with the compositions ranging from x=12 to 25. Up to now, there are different points of view about if the short range order (SRO) in the Fe–B amorphous powders prepared by the BHR around room temperature is the same with that in the amorphous ribbons made by rapidly quenched and vapor depositing techniques. In this paper, the SRO in Fe100−xBx amorphous powders with various boron concentration prepared by the BHR have been studied by the zero field spin echo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique. It was shown that the types of SRO in these samples vary with the B concentration. There exist Fe3B- and Fe2B-like SRO and a small amount of α-Fe in the samples with lower B concentration, while there are Fe3B- and FeB-like SRO in the alloys with higher B concentration. Fe3B-like SRO, however, only exists in the amorphous ribbons obtained by rapidly quenched method. It can be concluded that there are different types of SRO in the amorphous alloys prepared by different methods. This conclusion can explain the reason why the average hyperfine field at Fe sites deceases with the B concentration increasing.

    Notes: From numerical solutions of two colliding electromagnetic solitary waves, it is shown that their shapes are modified, and a trailing wake of plasma oscillations is produced by the collision. They therefore cannot be classified as solitons. For sufficiently large relative velocities, however, it is shown that the modifications to the vector and scalar potentials, as well as to the wake due to the collision, are small. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Macroscopic instabilities are governed by transport-determined plasma profiles and transport, in turn, is affected by instabilities. It is clear that neither transport process nor the behavior of instabilities can be treated in isolation. A model is developed for investigating the effects of the instabilities on global energy confinement in tokamaks. The results clearly demonstrate that magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities coupled with the transport process change not only the value of global energy confinement time, but also, perhaps more importantly, the energy confinement scaling law. While considering MHD effects, global energy confinement becomes sensitively dependent on the boundary transport conditions, and the cases with and without MHD stability can result in quite different parameter behavior of the global energy confinement. Such coupling should be considered when attempts are made to analyze the global energy confinement in tokamaks. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Low-aspect-ratio tokamaks with toroidal currents, Ip, up to 250 kA are formed and sustained in the Helicity Injected Tokamak experiment [Nelson et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 72, 3666 (1994)] using coaxial helicity injection. These plasmas are produced without use of a current drive transformer. Average toroidal currents are sustained at high values, 〈Ip〉=225 kA for 2 ms, where electron thermal energies are measured up to 80 eV with spectroscopy data suggesting burnthrough to the higher ionization states of oxygen. Currents can also be sustained for longer periods at lower values, 〈Ip〉=138 kA for 7 ms. These tokamaks are characterized by a rotating, n=1 distortion, with poloidal distortions approximately following the field line pitch, which only occur on the outer bad-curvature region. Equilibrium reconstructions show these plasmas have a tokamak q profile (q0=5 – 8, q95=10 – 12, qcyl(approximately-equal-to)3.6), with a hollow toroidal current profile and up to 170 kA of closed field toroidal current in a low-aspect-ratio, A=1.68 configuration. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: DyCo10Mo2−xSix compounds (x=0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0) with the ThMn12 structure were prepared by means of arc melting and subsequent vacuum annealing. Their magnetic properties were investigated by x-ray diffraction on fixed aligned powder samples and by magnetization measurements. The lattice constants decrease linearly with increasing value of x. The easy-magnetization direction (EMD) of all samples is parallel to the c axis at room temperature except for DyCo10Si2 whose EMD is within the basal plane. Deviations of the spontaneous moment up from a linear x dependence are observed. The Curie temperature attains a maximum value at x=1.5. There is a spin reorientation transition from the easy axis to the easy cone upon cooling for compounds with x=0.5, 1, and 1.5. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
