    Notizen: The horizontal viscous flow model with “infinite” areal extent can be used for almost any well flow problem whether two-dimensional or three-dimensional, steady or nonsteady, single aquifer or multiaquifer. This model can also be used in the field of soil mechanics for subsurface drainage problems. The design includes scale model analysis and the application of conformal mapping techniques in order to simulate an ideal aquifer. Construction, calibration, and test procedures for the model are described. The apparatus has proved to be both a valuable research tool and an excellent teaching aid.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Zusammenfassung Ein neu entwickeltes „double-punch“-Verfahren für die Bestimmung der Zugfestigkeit von Gesteinen wird beschrieben. Die Vorbereitung der Versuchsobjekte und die Durchführung der Versuche werden erläutert. Außerdem werden die Zugfestigkeiten nach dem „double-punch“- und „split-cylinder“-Verfahren verglichen.
    Kurzfassung: Résumé Dans cet article une nouvelle méthode de double poinçonnement permettant de déterminer la résistance à la traction des roches est présentée. La préparation des éprouvettes ainsi que la méthode d'essai sont décrites. Une comparaison est faite entre la résistance à la traction obtenue par double poinçonnement et par fendage d'un dylindre (compression diamétrale).
    Notizen: Summary This paper presents an experimental study of the newly developed double-punch test method for determination of the tensile strength of rocks. The method for preparation of test specimens and test procedure is reported and discussed. Comparisons of tensile strength determined from double-punch and split-cylinder tests are also presented.

    Notizen: Abstract Background: Patients undergoing an unsuccessful sympathectomy experience dryness on one hand and excessive sweating on the other. This is embarrassing for the patients, and resolution of both a previous failed sympathectomy and recurrent hyperhidrosis is important. Methods: From September 1995 to January 1998, 24 patients (11 men and 13 women; mean age, 28.2 years) underwent repeat transthoracic sympathectomy (TES). The repeat TES was performed with patients under general anesthesia using either a standard single-lumen endotracheal tube (12 patients) or a double-lumen endotracheal tube (12 patients). Ablation of T2 and T3 ganglia and any Kuntz fiber was performed in treating patients with palmar hyperhidrosis, and a similar procedure was performed on T3 and T4 ganglia for patients with axillary hyperhidrosis. Results: The reasons for failure of the previous TES were pleural adhesion (14/24), intact T2 ganglion (5/24), aberrant venous arch drainage to the superior vena cava (2/24), incomplete interruption of sympathectic nerve (2/24), and possible reinnervation (1/24). The mean operation time was 28 min (range, 18–72 min). In all, 23 patients had a satisfactory result, without recurrence of palmar or axillary hyperhidrosis. The mean follow-up time was 22 months (range, 5–30 months). The average hospital stay was 1.8 days. There was no surgical mortality. Conclusion: Repeat TES is a safe and effective method for treating both an unsuccessful sympathectomy and recurrent palmar or axillary hyperhidrosis.

    Notizen: Tower cycling fermentors for the production of single-cell protein from volatile substrates were studied. The mass transfer, mixing and circulation patterns, and residence time distribution (RTD) curves were investigated in these vessels. This study suggests that the tower cycling fermentors for volatile substrates fermentation may improve product yields and at the same time reduce the power consumption, thereby resulting in a significant increase in operating cost savings and capital profits. The results of this research further indicate a future potential for commercial scale tower cycling fermentors.
