Notizen: Frequency dependence of power loss of MnZn ferrite was investigated in relation with the absolute complex permeability, μa(=μa−jμa″), in the frequency range 10 kHz–5 MHz and the temperature range 23–120 °C. Residual loss, Pr contributes more than half of the total power loss, Pc, at a frequency above 1 MHz and exhibits a close relationship with μa″. The specimen with grain size of 4 μm and ZnO content of 0 mol % indicates μa′ of 1280 and Pc of 140 kW/m3 at 1 MHz and 50 mT. In the second measurement at the remanent state after the dc magnetization of 400 A/m, these values, however, increased and then gradually recovered with time. This behavior is considered to be related to the diffusion of Fe2+ through cation vacancy. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The influences of spin fluctuations on the magnetization M and thermal expansion for La(NixAl1−x)13 amorphous alloys have been investigated. The spontaneous magnetization obeys a M2–ξT4/3 relation and the coefficient ξ is concerned with the dynamical spin fluctuation spectrum. The spontaneous volume magnetostriction in the ferromagnetic state appears due to the thermal variation of the local spin amplitude. The change in the linear thermal expansion coefficient in paramagnetic temperature regions is caused by the saturation of amplitude of the spin fluctuations. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A first-order transition above the Curie temperature for ferromagnetic La(FexSi1−x)13 (x=0.86 and 0.88) compounds has been confirmed by applying a magnetic field. The magnetic state changes from the paramagnetic to the ferromagnetic state and the transition field increases with temperature, indicating an itinerant electron metamagnetic (IEM) transition. The IEM transition is broad in x=0.86 and becomes clearer in x=0.88, which takes a negative slope of the Arrott plot. The volume change just above the Curie temperature for x=0.88 is huge, about 1.5%, which is caused by a large magnetic moment induced by the IEM transition. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) originated from the itinerant-electron metamagnetic transition for La(FexSi1−x)13 compounds has been investigated. With increasing Fe concentration, the MCE is enhanced and both the isothermal magnetic entropy change ΔSm and the adiabatic temperature change ΔTad for the compound with x=0.90 are −28 J/kg K and 8.1 K, respectively, by changing the magnetic field from 0 to 2 T. Similar large MCE values are achieved around room temperature by controlling the Curie temperature by means of hydrogen absorption. Consequently, La(FexSi1−x)13 compounds are promising as magnetic refrigerant materials working in relatively low magnetic fields. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: La(FexSi1−x)13 compounds exhibit an itinerant-electron metamagnetic (IEM) transition above Curie temperature TC. The IEM transition in the compound with x=0.88 is accompanied by a giant volume change. From a practical viewpoint, TC was controlled by hydrogen absorption in order to obtain such a giant volume magnetostriction at room temperature. For the La(Fe0.88Si0.12)13H1.0 compound, the IEM transition occurs above TC=278 K, and a significant isotropic linear magnetostriction of about 0.3% at 7 T is induced in the vicinity of room temperature. This large magnetostriction is attributed to the giant volume magnetostriction of about 1% by the IEM transition. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Magnetic properties and magnetic-field-induced strains (MFIS) have been investigated for off-stoichiometric Ni–Mn–Al Heusler alloys with an ordered L21 structure. A clear martensitic transformation in Ni53Mn25Al22 alloy was revealed below the Curie temperature. In the polycrystalline specimen, an irreversible relative change due to the MFIS was confirmed between the martensite start and finish temperatures Ms and Mf, and a maximum relative length change ΔL/L|7T of about −100 ppm was observed at just above Mf. On the other hand, a large irreversible relative length change of about 1000 ppm has been demonstrated in the magnetic field of 7 T for a single crystal cut from the polycrystalline specimen. A delay of the response of strains against the magnetic field was also confirmed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Summary Background  We have previously shown that persimmon leaf extract and its major flavonoid constituent, astragalin, inhibited histamine release by basophils and that oral administration of these substances prior to the onset into an atopic dermatitis (AD) model mouse, NC/Nga, prevented development of dermatitis. Objectives  This study was designed to assess the clinical therapeutic effect of persimmon leaf extract and astragalin in NC/Nga mice suffering from dermatitis and the dose–response preventive effects of persimmon leaf extract on dermatitis and transepidermal water loss (TEWL).Methods  The efficacy of persimmon leaf extract or astragalin in NC/Nga mice was judged by measurement of skin severity, scratching behaviour, serum IgE levels or TEWL.Results  Oral administration of persimmon leaf extract (250 mg kg−1) or astragalin (1·5 mg kg−1) for 4 weeks into NC/Nga mice with overt dermatitis resulted in a decrease in the severity of the condition. The preventive effect of persimmon leaf extract on the dermatitis was dose-dependent and continuous intake of persimmon leaf extract significantly decreased its onset and development. In addition, TEWL was also suppressed at a persimmon leaf extract dose of 250 mg kg−1. No significant adverse reaction by these substances could be observed. Conclusions  These observations suggest that persimmon leaf extract or the flavonoid astragalin may be alternative substances for the management of AD.

Notizen: Summary Background Interleukin (IL)-18 has been shown to activate basophils to produce histamine and IL-4 and to induce naive T cells to differentiate into T-helper (Th) 2 cells. However, when expressed together with IL-12, IL-18 induces Th1 cell development and inhibits IgE synthesis. Previously we reported that serum IL-18 levels were elevated in the sera from atopic dermatitis-model mice NC/Nga, prior to the onset and during the development of dermatitis. Objectives We studied whether neutralization of IL-18 activity might affect dermatitis in NC/Nga mice, to investigate the role of IL-18 on dermatitis. Methods NC/Nga mice were given weekly anti-IL-18 antibody starting at 5 weeks of age to 13 weeks and development of dermatitis, scratching behaviour and serum IgE concentrations were evaluated. Results Continuous injections of anti-IL-18 antibody failed to inhibit the onset and development of dermatitis and IgE elevation. The treatment, rather, tended to lead to an exacerbation of dermatitis and scratching behaviour. In addition, the administration of anti-IL-18 antibody did not ameliorate the responsiveness of lymphocytes to IL-4, which was previously demonstrated as an immunological abnormality in the mouse. Conclusion This study demonstrates that, at least in NC/Nga mice, IL-18, although excessively expressed before the onset of dermatitis, shows antiallergic actions.
