Notizen: Background:  Lobular capillary hemangioma (LCH) usually occurs in the skin or mucous membranes as a rapidly growing red nodule. LCH is one of the most common vascular lesions in the oral mucosa. Tie2 is a novel, human endothelial receptor tyrosine kinase which may play an important role in blood vessel formation. In this study, we investigated its immunohistochemical expression in LCH of the oral mucosa. Methods:  Double immunostaining with anti-CD34 and antiα smooth muscle actin (SMA) antibodies was performed to characterize the cellular expression of Tie2 in 15 cases of this condition. Results:  We found Tie2 immunoreactivity in the ovoid cells only, which were frequently intermingled with αSMA-positive cells, especially in the hypercellular portion of LCH.Conclusions:  These results suggest that the expression of Tie2 in ovoid cells and the interaction between ovoid cells and αSMA-positive cells play an important part in the development and progression of LCH.

Notizen: The existence of the “dentinoma” as an independent entity has not been fully accepted, recently being regarded as an ameloblastic fibroma with formation of dentin and named an ameloblastic fibrodentinoma. However, there are histological differences between the several cases reported previously as “immature dentinoma” and the ameloblastic fibrodentinoma. This paper presents a case report of a dentin-forming intraosseous benign tumor without any histological features of ameloblastic fibroma. The patient was a 30-year-old woman with a rather well-circumscribed intraosseous lesion of the mandibular left premolar area. Histologically. the lesion consisted of dentin–like tissue with a tubular structure and globular calcifications, numerous epithelial strands and islands without enamel organ-like structure, and a cellular fibrous component without a primitive dental papilla-like appearance. The present case and a review of the literature suggest that epithelial elements in odontogenic fibroma-like lesions may occasionally have an inductive effect for dentin or dentin-like tissue formation.

Notizen: Summary This report presents a fatal case of ameloblastic fibrosarcoma arising from an ameloblastic fibroma, originating in the maxilla of 19-year-old Japanese male. An analysis of previously reported fatal cases of ameloblastic fibrosarcoma is included. In the course of the disease, the mesenchymal component of ameloblastic fibroma showed a dramatic histopathological transformation into sarcoma following multiple recurrence and the patient died of uncontrollable local infiltration of the cranial base. Although many cases have seemed to show disappearance of the epithelial component as malignant transformation progressed, many benign appearing ameloblastoid epithelial masses were scattered throughout the sarcomatous area even in the fatal stage in the present case. No distant metastases were found at autopsy. During multiple recurrences of the lesion, a little dysplastic dentin which was closely associated with both epithelial and mesenchymal components was found, though it could not be observed in autopsy material. Ultrastructural findings in autopsy material showed that the mesenchymal component consisted of undifferentiated mesenchymal cells, fibroblastic and fibrocytic cells with marked cellular and nuclear pleomorphism and that the epithelial component closely resembled the enamel organ.

Notizen: Summary Unusual multiple lesions of jaws in a middle-aged woman with all classic manifestations of Gardner's syndrome are reported. Clinical examination revealed a diffuse swelling of the mandible and maxilla with bone-like hardness and numerous radiopaque lesions scattered throughout both mandible and maxilla. Impaction of the molar teeth was revealed by roentogenographic examination. Histopathologically, the multiple jaw lesions consisted of trabecular proliferation of hardtissue which more closely resembled cementum than immature bone or osteoid. It was found to be united with the cementum of tooth-roots through obliteration of the periodontal ligament. The present lesions do not fit into any of the distinct entities of cemental lesions described.

Notizen: Summary A pigmented adenomatoid odontogenic tumour occurring in the mandible of a 12-year-old Japanese girl is reported. In addition to the characteristic histopathologic features, fine granules and coarse aggregates of melanin pigment were widely distributed in the spindle-shaped epithelial cells between duct-like structures, and dendritic cells containing melanin pigment were also distributed in tumour epithelium. The possible histogenesis of melanin pigment in the epithelial cells of the odontogenic lesions is discussed, although no firm conclusions could be drawn.

Notizen: Summary Experimental autoallergic sialadenitis was induced in SL/Ni mice by one or two injections of syngeneic submandibular gland homogenate emulsified with adjuvant. Light microscopically, there were marked lymphoid cell infiltration in the submandibular glands with high incidence and proliferation of duct epithelia. Furthermore complete alteration of whole glandular lobules in some cases was observed. Ultrastructurally, small and medium sized lymphocytes and plasma cells constituted a major portion of the infiltrating cells, and lymphocytes were frequently observed inside the basal lamina of ductal and acinar regions, especially observed in the small ductal region. In the aggregates of infiltrating cells, the cell remnants of salivary gland epithelia were scattered. Furthermore some of the epithelial cell remnants in aggregates of infiltrating cells could be recognized as epithelial masses which were composed of proliferated duct epithelial cells, though no typical structure of epimyoepithelial islands seen in Sjögren's syndrome was found. Anti-salivary duct antibody was detected in only one case.

Notizen: Summary Mast cell granules have been detected ultrastructurally within the cytoplasm of fibroblasts in fibrous hyperplastic lesion of the human gingiva. This finding is interpreted as phagocytosis of mast cell granules by fibroblasts. It is estimated that phagocytosis of mast cell granules occurred in four to six per cent of the fibroblasts. The result of present study suggests that mast cells play some role in fibroblast activity not only in animals as reported previously, but also in human connective tissue.

Notizen: Summary Crystalloids found in salivary duct cysts of the human parotid gland were examined by scanning electron microscopical observations with electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The cystic spaces were filled with numerous crystalloids which had a variety of forms with slight eosinophilic and glassy appearance. Scanning electron microscopically, crystalloids were hexagonal and rhombohedral in shape, and cutting the surface showed a polycyclic structure or regular parallel lamination. By electron probe X-ray microanalysis, sulphur was the only detected element. The present study suggests that crystalloids resulted from deposition from supersaturated saliva containing sulphur containing compounds into the cystic lumen or into epithelial cytoplasm.

Notizen: Abstract Oncocytic hyperplasia in the human labial salivary glands was sought in a series of 217 post-mortem subjects. Oncocytic change occured in 183 subjects and hyperplasia was found in 19 of those (the overall incidence being 8.8%), ranging in age from the third deacde to the ninth. The sex distribution showed a significantly greater rate in males (16 of 139 males, 11.5%; 3 of 78 females, 3.8%). Oncocytic hyperplasia occurred in the duct system, and not in the acinar regions; it was frequently seen in the interlobular and intralobular ducts. Oncocytic hyperplasia was classified into four types; focal hyperplasia of the duct wall resulting in partial thickening of the duct wall; marked hyperplasia resulting in thickening of the duct wall, extending over half of the circumference; marked hyperplasia extending to the whole duct wall and intralobular adeno-tubular hyperplasia with or without cystic dilatation. About half of the subjects with oncocytic hyperplasia showed a few hyperplastic foci in one gland. The changes increased in severity in older subjects.
