    Notizen: Single-crystal ac magnetic susceptibilities of [Co(NH3)6][CuCl5] along the three crystallographic axes in the temperature range from 1.1 to 90 K are presented. The magnetic behavior is characteristic of a three-dimensional antiferromagnet, its ordering temperature being at Tc=3.8 K. Susceptibilty data can be fit to a Heisenberg S=1/2 simple cubic model using high-temperature series expansions extrapolated with Pade approximants. Good agreement is found for an exchange constant J/kB=−3.13 K and values of g factor ga=2.09, gb=gc =2.04, a,b, and c being the crystallographic axes. This result makes [Co(NH3)6][CuCl5] one of the few examples of a 3D antiferromagnetic Heisenberg S=1/2 model. The magnetic behavior below Tc indicates the existence of crystallographic domains due to the structural transition from cubic to tetragonal symmetry that the system has at about 280 K.

    Notizen: The compound of stoichiometry [(4-chloropyridinium) FeCl4]2⋅4-chloropyridinium chloride is found to belong to the space group P21/n. The unit cell consists of eight FeCl4 anions, twelve [4-ClpyH]+ cations and four chloride ions. The ac susceptibility at zero-applied field, which was measured on a polycrystalline sample, exhibits a sharp peak with a maximum at Tc=2.725 K. This is behavior characteristic usually of either a ferromagnet or a canted antiferromagnet. The analogous pyridinium salt has the same constitution and orders at 2 K; the existence of canting in this compound is less evident. The ethylammonium compound orders at 2 K as well. These materials belong to a large series of tetrahaloferrates which exhibit unusual magnetic behavior and which are under extensive investigation.

    Notizen: There are relatively few superexchange-coupled antiferromagnets of chromium (III), largely because the exchange interactions are so weak. We have begun a program to study these materials and present magnetic susceptibility measurements on several new systems. We find that a polycrystalline sample of [Cr(NH3)5Cl]Cl2 behaves as a magnetic linear chain, and orders antiferromagnetically at about 600 mK, and that single crystals of [Cr(en)3]X3⋅3H2O order at 130 mK when X is chloride. The analogous bromide orders at 112 mK. The chloride exhibits an easy axis, parallel to the longitudinal axis, while the bromide exhibits an easy plane. The data have been successfully fitted by several different procedures which result in much the same parameters. In addition to the exchange, it is necessary to include in the analysis the zero-field splitting of the chromium ions. The zero-field splitting in paramagnetic NaMg[Cr(oxalate)3]⋅9H2O has also been measured.

    Notizen: The crystal structure and magnetic properties of [Co(py)2(H2O)2Br2] are reported. The space group is P1¯, with one molecule in the unit cell. The cell dimensions are a=6.400(1) A(ring), b=6.789(2) A(ring), and c=8.638(1) A(ring); the angle α=109.06(2), β=103.01(2), and γ=97.50(3) deg. The magnetic susceptibilities of both the polycrystalline powder and single crystals have been measured. The data are quite anisotropic and may be analyzed by the Ising model with g(parallel)=5.99(2) and J/kB=−0.99(2) K. The data show that the substance undergoes magnetic ordering at Tc=3.43(3) K, with the easy axis of spin alignment lying nearly parallel to the a axis. The likely superexchange paths are described.

    Notizen: The susceptibility of single crystals of Mn (L-tartrate)⋅3H2O was measured down to 0.5 K. At high temperatures, the susceptibility follows the Curie–Weiss law with cursive-theta=−4 K. The data along the c axis decrease below 2 K and extrapolate to zero for T→0 as expected for measurements parallel to the easy axis of a typical antiferromagnet. In the two perpendicular directions, the data show a sharp peak at Tc=1.85 K, indicative of a weak ferromagnetic moment. Part of the magnetic phase diagram has been determined: there is a spin-flop transition at Hc=4.2 kOe and a spin-flop para transition at about 32 kOe. For H⊥c, Hc is slightly higher. These data allow HA and HE to be calculated. Measurements of the specific heat are in progress.

    Notizen: The specific heat of several salts in this series of canted antiferromagnets, where A is 4-halopyridinium and X is chloride, bromide or a mixture of the two, is reported over the temperature interval 1.6–40 K.1 All contain the monomeric tetrahedral [FeX4]− ions. The substances include 2[4-Br(py)H] [FeCl4]⋅[4-Br(py)H]Cl (Tc=2.28 K), [4-Cl(py)H]3Fe2Cl9 (2.685 K), [4-Cl(py)H]1.1[4-Br(py)H]1.9Fe2Br9 (7.52 and 7.80 K) and (pyH)3Fe2Cl9 (2.12 K). Odd behavior is observed with several compounds such as [4-Br(py)H]3Fe2Br9, which exhibits two λ features in the specific heat (at 5.23 and 7.635 K) but only one ordering temperature in the ac susceptibility (at 7.70 K). The ordering phenomena are largely three dimensional in nature. The magnetic properties will be correlated with the structures and the likely superexchange paths.
