Notizen: Abstract Microscopic and macroscopic SiC-Si3N4 interfacial structures were synthesized and their properties examined. Microscopic interfaces were produced by hot isostatic pressing vapour-liquid-solid SiC whisker-polycrystalline Si3N4 matrix composites without densification aids. Macroscopic interfaces were formed by the chemical vapour deposited Si3N4 coating of large SiC single crystals. The characteristics of these model interfaces were investigated using transmission electron microscopy and indentation fracture. Results showed the microscopic interfaces to contain a small amount of second phase, while the macroscopic interfaces were pristine in nature with no second phase present. Pristine SiC-Si3N4 interfaces were strongly bonded at room temperature, but interfacial strength decreased at elevated temperatures.

Notizen: Abstract Molybdenum disilicide-titanium trisilicide (MoSi2-Ti5Si3) is a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) created for the purpose of improving the mechanical properties of molybdenum disilicide. Five alloys of this CMC were prepared by varying the ratio of volume per cent Ti5Si3 to volume per cent MoSi2. Evaluation of the specimens using the piezoelectric ultrasonic composite oscillator technique (PUCOT) determined the values of Young's modulus to range from 303 to 378 GPa at room temperature increasing with volume fraction of MoSi2. The values of Young's modulus for temperatures up to about 400 °C for each alloy decrease linearly with respect to increasing temperature. Damping within the specimens is independent of strain amplitude at room temperature, but shows some strain amplitude dependence at higher temperatures. The values of density for the alloys, determined using Archimedes' method, range from about 5200 to 5900 kg m−3, and compare favourably with the values determined by the rule of mixtures.

Notizen: Abstract Reproducible controlled surface flaws were introduced in reaction-bonded Si3N4 by Knoop microhardness indentation. Fracture was initiated at a single suitably oriented flaw on the tensile surface of a four-point bend specimen, and the stress required to propagate the controlled flaw catastrophically was used to calculate the critical stress intensity factor K IC from standard fracture-mechanics formulae for semi-elliptical surface flaws in bending. K IC was unchanged up to 1200° C, but values above this temperature together with those at room temperature after vacuum annealing were reduced approximately 25%. This reduction is thought to be due to reaction with oxygen concentrations present in the vacuum “atmosphere” rather than to a change in material properties. Although flaw “healing” was observed for annealing in air, it was accompanied by a decrease in fracture stress. It is suggested that this is due to volume mismatch between Si3N4 and the oxidation product, cristobalite, which introduces tensile stresses in the matrix material.
