Notizen: The TbCo/Si multilayers prepared by the rf magnetron sputtering system with various Si thickness have been investigated. X-ray diffraction, magnetic measurement and Kerr rotation have been performed. No antiferromagnetic coupling was found for the system. With the thickness of Si layer tSi increasing, the perpendicular anisotropy constant Ku, and the saturation magnetization Ms decreased rapidly. It was assumed that Co2Si and Tb had been formed in the interfacial zone between TbCo and Si layers due to the interlayer diffusion. The decreasing of Ms is attributed to the decreasing of the effective thickness of magnetic layer. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Tunneling giant magnetoresistance (MR) of the Fe–Al2O3 nanogranular films has been observed over a wide range of Fe volume fraction x and it took a maximum of 4.4% at room temperature for the film with x=0.45 at H=10 kOe. Furthermore, the field dependence of MR of the samples is well described by the form proportional to the square of the magnetization. Moreover, an estimate of the magnetic anisotropy energy density Ku increases with the decrease of x, yielding a value 2 orders of magnitude greater than the value for bulk Fe when x=0.23. The Bloch's law, MS(T)=MS0(1−BTb), can also hold for all the samples but with nonbulk parameters dependent on the Fe volume fraction. These results reveal a percolation effect on the magnetic properties, as well as the conductance, in such nanogranular films. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Recent development of electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion sources in China is reviewed. Emphasis is put on high charge state ECR ion sources which have been mainly developed in China by Institute of Modern Physics (IMP). Presently two ECR ion sources built by IMP for highly charged ion beams are put into operation for cyclotrons and atomic physics research. The development of high charge state ECR ion sources at IMP has progressed with a new magnetic field configuration, better condition for extraction of highly charged ions, high mirror magnetic field, large plasma volume, and special techniques to provide extra cold electrons. These techniques greatly enhance the production of highly charged ions from IMP ECR ion sources. So far more than 185 eμA of Ar11+ and 50 eμA of Xe26+ were produced by the IMP ECR ion sources. The metallic ion beam production was tested and the first beam 40Ca11+ was provided to the cyclotrons at IMP. The beam intensity of 40Ca11+ could reach 130 eμA. The next part of this article will report the latest progress of 2.45 GHz ECR ion sources in China. A 2.45 GHz compact permanent magnet proton ion source was designed and constructed by IMP. A new microwave feeding system is applied on this ion source. The ion source is able to deliver 90 mA of mixed ion beam (H1++H2++H3+) after preliminary commissioning. The article also mentions a small 2.45 GHz ECR ion source which was built by Sichuan University and used for industry applications. The dependence of plasma density and electron temperature on radio frequency power, neutral gas pressure, and different microwave windows was measured by a Langmuir probe on this ion source. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Alloy films of Co0.70Mn0.30 were grown on GaAs (001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy at room temperature. The metastable tetragonally distorted single crystal structure was confirmed by reflection high energy electron diffraction and x-ray diffraction measurement, which exhibited a 2.87 A(ring) in-plane lattice parameter. Ferromagnetic resonance measurements and theoretical fitting were performed and showed that, with a Mn capping layer, a uni-directional anisotropy existed. In addition, a fourfold tetragonal magnetocrystalline anisotropy as well as a uniaxial term in the film plane was also confirmed. The hysteresis loops recorded by longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr-effect also demonstrated the existence of different kinds of in-plane magnetic anisotropy. The origins of the anisotropy are explained tentatively. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The hysteresis loops of exchange-biased FeMn/Co bilayers have been measured by means of a superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer. The obtained right and left coercivities exhibit different temperature dependences. With temperature increasing, the left coercivity monotonously increases while the right one remains almost constant until a critical temperature Ti. Upon decreasing the thickness of the antiferromagnet (AF) layer, Ti decreases. The asymmetric behavior of the right and left coercivities indicates that the reversal mechanisms are different for increasing and decreasing field. By taking into account the temperature dependence of the spin alignment in the AF layer, the unusual asymmetric behavior is well explained. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The magnetic exchange anisotropy of a series of single crystal Co1−xMnx/Mn bilayers (0≤x≤ 0.37) is studied as a function of the Mn content. By means of ferromagnetic resonance, it is found that the exchange anisotropy shows up when 0.30≤x≤0.37 and disappears when x≤0.20 at room temperature. The phenomenon of Mn enrichment is observed at the Co–Mn surface by the technique of varying angle x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which may lead to the formation of antiferromagnetic Mn-rich interface regions and, hence, results in the exchange interaction between the ferromagnetic Co1−xMnx film and the antiferromagnetic Mn-rich interface region. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The low-temperature magnetic and transport properties of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 nanoparticles have been investigated. It is found that a surface spin-glass behavior exists in La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 nanoparticles, which undergo a magnetic transition to a frozen state below 45 K. The low-temperature surface spin-glass behavior exists even at the highest field used (H=50 kOe). Moreover, the spin-glass-like transition disappears for particles above 50 nm. In addition, the suppressed low-field magnetoconductivity (LFMC) observed at low temperature for nanosized La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 is obviously lower than the expected upper limit of LFMC, 1/3, for polycrystalline manganites, which is proposed to arise from the higher-order tunneling through the insulating spin-glass-like surface layers. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The temperature dependence of the coercivity in biased FeMn/Co bilayers is investigated. An asymmetric behavior of the left and right coercivity with varying temperature is observed. The asymmetry can be understood by taking into account the variation of the spin arrangements in the antiferromagnetic layer. The calculated results are in agreement with the experimental ones qualitatively. All these results suggest that the magnetization reversal mechanisms are different for increasing and decreasing fields. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion sources are used for cyclotron complex and atomic physics research at the Institute of Modern Physics (IMP). Intense beams of highly charged gaseous and metallic ions could be produced by the IMP 14.5 GHz ECR ion source (LECR2-Lanzhou Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source No. 2). A particular emphasis has been put on the production of metallic ion beams recently. Metallic ion beams of Mg, Ca, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb were tested at the IMP 14.5 GHz ECR ion source (LECR2) to improve beam intensities and long-term stability. A new ECR ion source (Lanzhou Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source No. 3), an upgraded version of the IMP 14.5 GHz ECR (LECR2) but with double-frequency wave heating (10 GHz+14.5 GHz), is under commissioning. The preliminary results of this new source will be presented. To satisfy the requirements of the heavy ion cooling storage ring that is under construction at IMP, a fully superconducting ECR ion source (Lanzhou Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source with Superconducting Coils) with a completely new structure is being developed for the production of intense heavy ion beams of very high charge states, such as Xe30+ and U40+. The superconducting magnet consists of three axial solenoid coils and six saddle-curved sextupole coils with a cold iron structure as field booster and clamp. At full excitation, this magnet assembly will produce maximum peak fields on axis of 4.0 T at the injection, 2.2 T at the extraction region, and a radial sextupole field of 2.0 T at plasma chamber wall. The design features and status of this new superconducting ECR ion source will be presented. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A new electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source (LECR3—Lanzhou Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source No. 3) has been constructed this year. The main purpose of this source is to provide highly charged ion beams for atomic physics and surface physics research. The design of this ion source is based on the IMP 14.5 GHz ECR ion source (LECR2—Lanzhou Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source No. 2) with double rf heating by inserting waveguide directly and aluminum chamber. Furthermore, the volume of the plasma chamber is larger than that of LECR2 so as to increase the rf power and improve beam intensity for highly charged ions. But the hexapole field on the chamber wall is kept the same value in order to compare with the performance of LECR2. After only four days conditioning the first test results were obtained. The final result of this ion source is expected to be better than LECR2's. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
