    Notes: Bi12(GaxBi1−x)O19.5 (BGaO) films with thickness in the range 100–1000 nm have been deposited on (100) Y-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and (100) Bi12GeO20 (BGO) substrates using a KrF excimer pulsed laser and polycrystalline targets with composition x=0.63–0.72. The laser power density threshold for ablation of the targets has been determined to be J0=4.8 J/cm2. A deposition rate of 0.03 A(ring)/pulse was found for the substrate-target distance (6 cm) and laser fluence (J=7 J/cm2) used. Transparent and crystalline films were obtained heating the substrate in the 450–550 °C range under 1.5×10−1 mbar of oxygen pressure. Films deposited on hot substrates have a Ga stoichiometry x=0.5 but a Bi content slightly lower than that corresponding to sillenite. Films deposited on YSZ show preferential orientation. From the x-ray diffraction results and the comparison of the ionic distributions, it has been concluded that the most likely orientation between both lattices is 〈310〉{130}BGaO(parallel)〈011〉{100}YSZ. A {100}BGaO(parallel){100}BGO epitaxy has been inferred from Rutherford backscattering analysis. On both substrates the films behave as step waveguides with refractive index close to the value determined in bulk BGaO. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Highly strained Al1−yInyAs/Ga1−xInxAs multiple quantum wells have been grown by atomic layer molecular beam epitaxy on [001]-GaAs substrates. Raman scattering and x-ray diffraction techniques have been used to determine layer composition and strain for a wide range of In concentration (0≤x≤0.44). When a thick buffer layer of AlInAs is used, commensurate growth of the quantum wells takes place if the In content of the barriers equals that of the buffer layer. Then the strain is only accumulated in the wells. The GaInAs wells can be either under biaxial tension or compression depending on the relative In content in wells and barriers.

    Notes: Total scattering cross sections for low-energy collisions of C60 fullerene with alkali ions are theoretically estimated using an accurate spherical potential approximation. These cross sections show the relevance of polarization effects. Our results indicate a way in which collisional experimental methods could be used to measure the high polarizabilities of C60 and other fullerenes. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We introduce a secular semiempirical model of the Pariser–Parr–Pople type to reproduce the electronic structure and polarizability of the C60 fullerene. The model is then used to simulate the response of this molecule to an electric charge and estimate its polarization energy. By expressing the charge potential at the C60-cage surface as a multipole expansion, an analytical form is obtained for the polarization energy. Application of these results to endo- and exohedral complexes of alkali ions gives data in rather good agreement with recent ab initio calculations [Hira and Ray, Phys. Rev. A 52, 141 (1995)]. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We studied the light scattering spectra of three molecular beam epitaxy GaAs samples with Si-δ doping. A broad feature appears in these spectra which is similar to that attributed by other authors to resonant Raman scattering by electronic intersubband transitions. By studying the dependence of this emission on exciting laser photon energy we believe that this line is really produced by nonequilibrium luminescence at the E0+Δ0 gap.

    Notes: A Pariser–Parr–Pople approach, complemented with physical consistency criteria based on the expected molecular response to a weak electric field, has been used to predict the electronic level structure and polarizabilities of five icosahedral fullerenes in the range C60–C720. The behavior of the polarizability α as a function of the fullerene size is given by the expression α=0.75Re3, where Re is an effective molecular radius. It is argued that fullerenes would present the maximum polarizability values allowed for carbon shells, as if they were made of graphene. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Raman spectroscopy is used to characterize highly mismatched (7%) InAs-AlAs superlattices grown by atomic layer molecular beam epitaxy. In particular, folded acoustic modes are presented and compared with two different theoretical models (Rytov and linear chain). We find good agreement between theory and experiments. We estimate, with a simple model, the magnitude of the effect of the strain on the phonon frequency shifts.

    Notes: The effects of amyloid-beta (Aβ) protein on the expression of m1, m2 subunits of mAChR and on α7nAChR were analyzed in the cerebral cortex and in the hippocampus of rats following injections of Aβ (1–40) (BACHEM, 2 μg in 1 μL of PBS) into the left retroesplenial cortex (RSg) and injections of 1 μL of PBS into the right RSg. Sections were immunoreacted for the localization of α7, m1, m2, GABA, somatostatin and parvalbumin. Injections of Aβ resulted in loss of neurones expressing α7- and m1-like immunoreactivity (IR) in frontal, RSg cortices, hippocampus and subicular complex. A decrease of α7, m1- and m2-like-IR fibers and structures-like terminals was also seen in hippocampus, subicular and cerebral cortex. α7nAChR and m1, m2 subuntis of mAChRs were most commonly identified on GABAergic interneurones. These results point to an effect of Aβ on the synthesis of α7nAChR and mAChRs and suggest an important role of cholinoceptive interneurones in the dysfunction of hippocampus and cerebral cortex seen in AD.

    Notes: Progressive nodular histiocytosis is a proliferative process of histiocytes, the main element of which is the dermal dendrocyte. It is considered to form part of a group of histiocytic disorders related to juvenile xanthogranuloma, which also includes xanthoma disseminatum, benign cephalic histiocytosis, spindle cell xanthogranuloma and generalized eruptive histiocytosis; disorders which perhaps represent the spectrum of one single entity. We present the case of a 57-year-old man who, for 26 years, had had a progressively deforming process of cutaneous lesions, with systemic involvement, including chronic myeloid leukaemia, hepatosplenomegaly, hypothyroidism, hyperuricaemia and hypocholesterolaemia. We have not been able to establish precisely the relationship between these features.

    Notes: From among fossil fauna and flora specimens discovered in the famous outcrop of lithographic limestone of Montsec Mountain (Lleida, Spain), from the Early Cretaceous, there is one specimen of a small incomplete bird skeleton. Only the bones of the left wing, the wish-bone (furcula), feathers and some other fragmentary bones are preserved. It lacks the skull, backbone, pectoral region, pelvic girdle and hind legs.
