    Notizen: Exciton resonance energies of hexagonal (h-) GaN(0001) epilayers were determined by a combination of high-resolution modulated photoreflectance methods. The results were analyzed thoretically using the Luttinger-Kohn type Hamiltonian for the valence bands under the in-plain biaxial stress, and we obtained the shear deformation potential constants and energy gap in unstrained crystal. Occurrence of the anticrossing of B and C valence bands in tensile biaxially strained h-GaN was suggested. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The high-repetition switching capabilities of a recently developed symmetric Mach–Zehnder (SMZ) all-optical switch are experimentally investigated. Using a series of four control pulses at intervals of 100 or 25 ps, nearly full switching is achieved at the corresponding intervals. The results experimentally show that the repetition rate, as well as the switching speed, of the SMZ all-optical switch is not restricted by the slow relaxation of the utilized high-efficiency band-filling effect. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Immunohistochemical identification of myoepithelial cells using α-smooth muscle actin provides little information about the nature of solid or quasi-solid portions of epithelial hyperplasia and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) because actin-rich myoepithelial cells are usually demonstrated only in the stromal–epithelial junction of both lesions. We studied the differential distribution of α-subunit (S100-α) and β-subunit (S100-β) of S100 protein in actin-negative areas of usual epithelial hyperplasia and DCIS by employing the streptavidin method with monospecific rabbit antibodies against each subunit. All usual epithelial hyperplasias (n=17) were composed of heterogeneous epithelial cell types; cells expressing S100-α and/or S100-β were intermingled with non-expressing cells, resulting in a mosaic-like pattern. On the contrary, DCIS (n=32) uniformly lacked immunoreactive S100-β; S100-α was diffusely expressed in 24 (68.8%) DCIS (three solid/comedo, 13 cribriform, four endocrine, one micropapillary, three papillary variants) and negative in the remaining eight (31.2%) DCIS (one cribriform, two micropapillary, four papillary and one apocrine variants). In conclusion, in contrast to usual epithelial hyperplasia that expresses both S100-α and S100-β in a heterogeneous pattern, DCIS can express only S100-α in a monotonous pattern, possibly signifying unidirectional differentiation toward secretory glandular epithelium.

    Notizen: We previously described nine cases of angiocentric lymphoma of a possible natural killer (NK)-cell lineage with a surface CD3− CD56+ phenotype occurring in sites other than the upper and lower respiratory tract. This study was performed to investigate the association of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) with these lymphomas, using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the presence of EBV-DNA, in situ hybridization (ISH) for EBV-encoded small RNAs (EBERs) and immunohistology for EBV-determined nuclear antigen-2 (EBNA-2) and latent membrane protein-1 (LMP-1) in paraffin sections. PCR and ISH produced almost identical results, and EBERs were identified in the nuclei of the lymphoma cells of three cases, two of which exhibited LMP-1 in the cytoplasm of tumour cells without EBNA-2 expression. Molecular genetic analysis revealed EBV to be incorporated into these three EBER-positive cases either clonally or biclonally. It was revealed by re-evaluation of their morphology with the established EBV status on each case that, in contrast to the rather variable and irregular cellular composition of the EBV- positive tumours, the EBV-negative tumours stood out because of their remarkably uniform ‘blastoid’ appearance, and could be grouped as blastic NK-cell lymphoma. The relationship of the EBV-positive cases with nasal NK-cell tumours has yet to be clarified.

A controlled-release preparation of mesalazine microgranules (PentasaR; Ferring AS, Vanlose, Denmark) releases the active ingredient over a wide area from the small intestine to the rectum and is consequently expected to bring about therapeutic benefits to patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.2. Mesalazine microgranules (50 or 150 mg/kg per day) were administered orally to each rabbit with carrageenan-induced colitis for six weeks. Its inhibitory effect on colonic mucosal damage was assessed in terms of the microscopic damage scores, leukotriene B4 concentrations and concentrations of mesalazine derivatives.3. At the end of the experiment, the mesalazine 150 mg group had gained a significantly greater bodyweight than the control group. Microscopic damage was significantly lower in the 150 mg group than in the untreated control group. Tissue concentrations of 5-aminosalicylic acid and acetyl-5-aminosalicylic acid in the small and large intestine were higher in the 150 mg group than in the 50 mg group. Mucosal leukotriene B4 levels tended to be lower in rabbits receiving the larger dose of mesalazine.4. The present study indicates that slow release 5-aminosalicylic acid at the larger dose reaches the large bowel in sufficiently high concentrations following oral administration and significantly reduces carrageenan-induced colitis in the rabbit.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Résumé Nous avons utilisé des vis biodégradables en poly L lactide pour les ostétomies acétabulaires rotatoires des 41 hanches de 41 patients et nous avons étudié les complications possibles sur un suivi moyen de 4.9 ans (de 1 à 7.7 ans). L’échantillon comportait 39 femmes et 2 hommes. L’âge moyen au moment de l’opération était de 32 ans (12 à 55 ans). Nous avons noté 2 cas de complication post-opératoire sous la forme d’un petit abcès sous-cutané autour des sutures irrésorbables, 1 cas de thrombophlébite et 1 cas d’eczéma local. Le petit abcès souscutané s’est résorbé après enlèvement du matériau de suture dans les 2 cas, la thrombophlébite a été traiteé l’aspirine et l’eczéma local a été soigné par une thérapie locale aux stéroides en 5.8 ans. La fréquence des dermatites locales après l’utilisation des implants biodégradables devrait être étudiée sur un plus grand nombre de cas.
    Notizen: Abstract  We used biodegradable poly-l-lactide screws in rotational acetabular osteotomy in 41 hips of 41 patients, and studied the complications after an average follow-up of 4.9 years (range 1.0–7.7 years). There were 39 females and 2 males, their average age at the time of the operation was 32 years (range 12–55 years). A small subcutaneous abscess appeared around the non-absorbable sutures in 2 patients after surgery. There was 1 case of thrombophlebitis and 1 of local dermatitis. The small subcutaneous abscess resolved after the removal of the suture material in the 2 cases, and the thrombophlebitis resolved with aspirin. The local dermatitis persisted but was cured by local steroid therapy over 5.8 years. The incidence of local dermatitis after the use of biodegradable implants should be further investigated.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Résumé  Nous avons évalué les résultats de l’arthroplastie capsulaire selon Colonna dans le cas de 4 malades atteint de luxation congénitale de la hanche unilatérale. Toutes étaient de sexe féminin, agées de 10 à 14 ans à l’intervention chirurgicale et de 42 à 50 ans au délai d’observation. Le résultat le plus remarquable dans cette étude réside dans la bonne qualité de la marche. Bien que la radiologie montre la présence d’une forte dégénération coxale, les malades ne souffrent que de douleurs légères ou modérées de la hanche.
    Notizen: Abstract  We evaluated the results of Colonna capsular arthroplasty in 4 patients with unilateral congenital dislocation of the hip. All of these patients were female, aged 10–14 years at the time of surgery, and 42–50 years at the time of follow-up. The most striking finding in this study was the good ability to walk. Although radiographs showed considerable joint degeneration, all of these patients had only mild to moderate pain in the hip.

    Notizen: Abstract  DNA heterogeneity of colorectal carcinomas has been investigated by flow cytometry; most studies have focused on the clinical usefulness of DNA ploidy analysis. Since cancers consist of predominant subclones with proliferative advantage due to clonal expansion, we attempted to analyse the clonal expansion of colorectal carcinomas within a tumour by measuring DNA ploidy. The DNA ploidy and heterogeneity of multiple fresh samples obtained from 164 colorectal adenocarcinomas were analysed by flow cytometry. Each tumour was divided into an average of six specimens, which were analysed separately. For 146 of the tumours (89%) at least one DNA aneuploid population was found within the cancer tissue examined. DNA multiploidy was detected in 26 cases (17.8%) among the cancers with aneuploidy. Based on the DNA index (DI), hypertriploid aneuploidy (1.7〈DI〈1.8) was found most frequently in the aneuploid colorectal cancers examined. DNA ploidy heterogeneity was seen in 75 (51.4%) of the DNA aneuploid tumours. There were only 3 cases with more than three subclones including a diploid line. The present results indicate that colorectal carcinomas consist of a few dominant subclones and have a DNA content (hypertriploid aneuploid) that confers a proliferative advantage.
