Notes: [Auszug] FOR the past four years a very simple form of tide-predicting machine, the invention of Captain A. Inglis, the harbour-master, has been in use at Port Adelaide for the construction of the yearly published tide tables. The tides at Port Adelaide are rather peculiar in their behaviour, this being ...

Notes: [Auszug] ALONG the north-west coast of Australia the tidal wave, flowing in from the Indian Ocean, produces at most places a large rise and fall. At Port Darwin the mean spring range is about 24 feet, but the range is sometimes as much as 30 feet. A tide gauge of Lord Kelvin's pattern was set up here by ...

Notes: Abstract. The highly sensitive GASP array at the INFN Legnaro Laboratory was used to study the $\gamma$ -ray de-excitation of neutron-rich nuclei produced in the deep-inelastic processes which occur when 230 MeV 36S ions interact with a target of 176Yb. Yrast decay schemes were identified in over forty target-like fragments and in over twenty projectile-like fragments. Analysis of the data has resulted in extensions to the yrast decay sequences of the target-like species, 176Hf, 166Er, 172Yb, and 152Sm. New transitions have also been observed in a number of projectile-like species including 34P and 41Cl. Experimental results are compared with the results of shell model calculations.

Notes: Abstract Caterpillars of the arctiid moth, Grammia geneura, are polyphagous, but species of Plantago are amongst their preferred food plants. A neuron in the medial styloconic sensillum on the galea has been shown to have a general phagostimulatory function. Experiments with binary mixtures and cross-adaptation have demonstrated that it responds to some sugars, to several amino acids, and also to catalpol. Catalpol is a plant secondary compound in Plantago and a phagostimulant for the caterpillars. The possible significance of combining sensitivity to nutrient compounds with sensitivity to a secondary compound is discussed.

Notes: Abstract: High-spin states in neutron-rich Dy isotopes, populated in deep-inelastic processes produced by the interaction of 234 MeV 37Cl ions with a 160Gd target, have been studied using the highly sensitive EUROBALL IV gamma-ray detector array. The previously known level schemes for 159,160,161,162Dy have been extended to significantly higher spin ( ? 30?) and the i 13/2 band crossing in 159Dy has been observed for the first time. The experimental results are discussed within the framework of cranked shell model and projected shell model calculations with particular reference to the observed delayed band crossing in 162Dy.

Notes: Abstract. The toxicological significance of exposure of members of the public to spray drift odors of four herbicide formulations (three 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic [2,4-D] acid derivatives and one MCPA [4-methyl-2-chlorophenoxyacetic acid] derivative) has been studied using a combination of novel odor measurement and classic residue analysis techniques. The mean odor concentrations, generated during the spraying of the commercial herbicide formulations under simulated aerial application conditions, were about twofold higher for 2,4-D ethylhexyl ester (22,500 OUc/m3) and MCPA (30,100 OUc/m3) than for 2,4-D butyl ester (12,400 OUc/m3) and 2,4-D amine (11,800 OUc/m3). Detailed investigations determined that the odors are due to trace manufacturing impurities and additives in the commercial formulations, whereas the herbicide active ingredients are odorless. Measured airborne herbicide active ingredient concentrations under the simulated aerial application conditions were all below their respective occupational safety and health TLV-TWA values, indicating that exposures of toxicological significance as a result of spray drift are unlikely.

Notes: Abstract The absorption of nonheme59ferric chloride from a test meal was measured, using a whole-body counter, in 34 alcoholics with liver disease of varying severity, 30 of whom had normal hemoglobin values and four of whom were anemic. The results were compared with those obtained in five patients with iron-deficient anemia and nine healthy control subjects. There were no significant differences in mean percentage iron absorption (±sem) in the nonanemic alcoholic patients with fatty liver (14.6±3.7), alcoholic hepatitis (18.6±5.7), or cirrhosis (21.1±3.5) when compared with control subjects (22.0±2.5). Significantly increased mean percentage iron absorptions were seen, however, in the patients with iron-deficient anemia (64.8±5.6;P〈0.0001) and the alcoholics with anemia (60.7±7.8;P〈0.0001). There was an inverse relationship between iron absorption and serum ferritin concentration in the nonanemic alcoholics (r=−0.37;P〈0.025) but no correlation between iron absorption and liver iron concentration. The addition of absolute alcohol (0.5 g/kg body weight) to the test meal resulted in an increase in mean percentage iron absorption in eight control subjects (21.6±1.6 to 29.0±6.1) and in ten nonanemic alcoholics (15.8±3.2 to 20.0±3.8), although these differences did not achieve significance. Similarly when intravenous alcohol was given to four control subjects at the time of the test meal, iron absorption increased in all four so that the mean percentage iron absorption increased, although not significantly, from 17.6±2.7 to 39.3±9.5. Iron absorption in alcoholics does not differ significantly from normal. While the increased liver iron concentrations seen in approximately one third of alcoholics cannot be attributed to an increase in iron absorption as a result of chronic alcohol ingestion, further studies are needed to elucidate the acute effects of alcohol on iron absorption.
