Notes: To further the understanding of the natural genetic diversity for disease resistance to powdery mildew (Erysiphe cichoracearum) in Arabidopsis thaliana, quantitative trait loci analysis was undertaken on recombinant inbred lines derived from a cross between the resistant accession Warschau-1 and the susceptible Columbia-0. Powdery mildew grew less well on Warschau-1, but the resistance was not associated with a specific block in the infection sequence. Two potential powdery mildew disease-resistance loci were identified and mapped, one with a major effect and one with a minor effect on disease resistance. The two loci acted in an additive manner to confer resistance, and together they explained 65% of the variation in resistance. In addition, the major powdery mildew disease-resistance locus was genetically mapped to the bottom of chromosome III, a region containing the powdery mildew resistance loci RPW7, RPW8 and RPW10. Unlike resistance mediated by the RPW8 locus in the accession Moscow-1, resistance in Warschau-1 was not correlated with the hypersensitive response, highlighting the influence of genetic background or environmental factors on the expression of disease resistance. Together with the powdery mildew resistance loci described in other studies, these results suggest that A. thaliana is a useful source of natural powdery mildew disease resistance, which potentially can be utilized in fundamental studies and as a tool for applied studies.

Notes: Abstract The GlobalstarTM system provides telephone and data services to and from mobile and fixed users in the area between ±70 degrees latitude. Connection between user terminals and the PSTN is established through fixed terrestrial gateways via a constellation of low earth orbiting (LEO) satellites. Globalstar uses an extension of the IS‐95 CDMA standard that is used in terrestrial digital cellular systems. The LEO satellite link is sufficiently different from the terrestrial cellular link that certain departures from IS‐95 were needed both in signal design as well as in system operation. This paper describes some of the similarities and differences of Globalstar air interface versus IS‐95.

Notes: Abstract Laparoscopic gynecologic surgery has gained worldwide popularity in the past few years, but complications of this new technique do occur. We encountered three patients who developed major complications after laparoscopic gynecologic procedures including perforation of the sigmoid colon, urinary bladder, and ureter. We report the computed tomographic findings of these cases and the diagnostic dilemmas they posed.

Notes: Abstract A regional survey of the microbiological water quality along the shoreline of the Southern California Bight (SCB), from Point Conception south to Ensenada, Mexico, was conducted during August, 1998, by 36 agencies under the coordination of the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project (SCCWRP). Microbiological water quality was assessed by calculating the percentage of shoreline-mile-days that exceeded bacterial indicator thresholds for total and fecal coliforms, total/fecal ratios, and enterococci. Sample sites were selected using a stratified random sampling approach, with the SCB recreational shoreline divided into six strata: high- and low-use sandy beaches, high- and low-use rocky shoreline, and perennial and ephemeral freshwater outlets. Samples were collected on a weekly basis at a total of 253 sites, beginning on August 2nd, 1998 and continuing for five weeks. Samples were analyzed by 22 participating labs using their normal methods (multiple tube fermentation, membrane filtration, Colilert® and/or Enterolert®). All labs met testing criteria established through intercalibration exercises and quality control check samples distributed during the sampling period. Nearly 95% of the shoreline-mile days did not exceed daily and monthly bacterial indicator thresholds, demonstrating good bacteriological water quality along the SCB shoreline. Freshwater outlets, comprised mainly of storm drains, had the poorest water quality with 60% and 40% of the shoreline-miles exceeding monthly and daily thresholds, respectively. Freshwater outlets were also more likely to demonstrate exceedances by multiple indicators at a single site, and repeat exceedances at sites over the five-week period. Compared with the southern California beaches, Mexican beaches had nearly 5 times the number of exceedances for total and fecal coliforms, and nearly 8 times the number of exceedances for total/fecal ratios.

Notes: Abstract Different NAA plus kinetin or BA combinations were tested on Francia Pernod fennel seedlings for callus induction and plant regeneration. Callogenesis from hypocotyls was obtained in all auxin/cytokinin-containing media. The organogenic response was observed especially in presence of NAA plus kinetin. The highest frequency of shoot regeneration was found when the auxin and kinetin were used at a 1:1 ratio. Moreover, a prolonged culture period increased shoot formation. Somatic embryogenesis was tested on several fennel populations. The results gave evidence of the genotypic importance. Two different protocols were used for somatic embryo induction. Using the first protocol among the different fennel genotypes tested, only Francia Pernod showed embryogenic capacity. In this case, from a primary non-embryogenic callus cultured for 12 months in presence of 2,4-D, an embryogenic secondary callus was produced. When transferred to the medium without 2,4-D (agarized or liquid), this gave embryogenic plants in high frequency. As far as the second embryogenic method is concerned, secondary embryogenic callus developed only in the presence of 2,4-D plus kinetin in Francia Pernod genotype. Thereafter, the replacement of those growth regulators by GA3 into the medium greatly increased the somatic embryo development, especially in `Francia Pernod', but also in `Aboca erbe' callus, a population with a very poor embryogenic capacity. In Francia Pernod, the primary and secondary (embryogenic) calli showed different morphological and histological responses, either when the secondary callus was induced by 2,4-D alone or by 2,4-D plus kinetin. Ontogenetic processes leading to somatic embryo formation are described in this context.
