    Notes: Summary In view of its highly tissue-selective pharmacological properties (i.e., relatively pure antagonist in reproductive tissue with minimal agonist effects to nearly full agonist properties in bone and on cholesterol metabolism), terms used to define compounds with slightly related pharmacology (i.e., antiestrogen, partial estrogen agonist) do not adequately describe raloxifene's activity. Thus, raloxifene is distinct from agents such as tamoxifen (which does stimulate the uterus), or frank estrogen (which do not sufficiently antagonize estrogen's agonistic effects in reproductive tissue). In this regard, raloxifene and its pyrrolidine analogue, LY117018, (81) are the first representatives of a novel class of pharmacological agents, which we have termed “selective estrogen receptor modulator” (SERM). While we now have considerable evidence to distinguish estrogen recepto-mediated effects on bone from those on reproductive tissue, the precise mechanism for this tissue-specific mechanism remains an active area of investigation. Clearly, many important issues remain to be explored.

    Notes: Abstract We have previously reported the isolation of a gene from a soybean cDNA library encoding a Ypt/Rab-related small GTP-binding protein, Sypt. Here, we report the isolation of a second Ypt/Rab-related gene, designated Srab2, from the same soybean cDNA library. And we compare the in vivo function of the two soybean genes utilizing a yeast ypt1-1 mutant. The Srab2 gene encodes 211 amino acid residues with a molecular mass of 23 169 Da. The deduced amino acid sequence of the Srab2 is closely related to the rat (76%) and human (75%) Rab2 proteins, but it shares relatively little homology to Sypt (46%) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae ypt proteins (41%). Genomic Southern blot analysis using the cDNA insert of Srab2 revealed that it belongs to a multigene family in the soybean genome. The protein encoded by Srab2 gene, when expressed in Escherichia coli, disclosed a GTP-binding activity. The expression pattern of the Srab2 gene is quite different from that of the Sypt gene. The Srab2 gene is predominantly expressed in the plumule region, while expression was very low in the other areas in soybean seedlings. On the other hand, the Sypt mRNA is not detectable in any tissues of soybean seedlings grown in the dark. However, light significantly suppressed the Srab2 gene expression, but enhanced the transcript levels of the Sypt gene in leaf and, at even higher levels, in root tissues. When the Srab2 and Sypt genes are introduced separately into a S cerevisiae defective in vesicular transport function, the Srab2 gene cannot complement the temperature-sensitive yeast ypt1-1 mutation at all, in contrast to the Sypt gene. In conclusion, the difference of functional complementation of the yeast mutation together with differential expression of the two genes suggest that the in vivo roles of the Srab2 and Sypt genes may be different in soybean cells.

    Notes: Summary Steady laminar boundary layer flow and heat transfer over a thin longitudinal isothermal circular cylinder moving in a flowing stream has been studied in this paper. The cases in which the cylinder is moving in the same (parallel) or in the opposite (reverse) direction to the free stream are considered. The transformed nonsimilar boundary layer equations are solved numerically using the Keller-box method for some values of the curvature parameter, the Prandtl number and relative velocity parameter. The results show that the velocity and temperature distributions as well as the coefficients of skin friction and the local Nusselt number are appreciably affected by the relative velocity parameter.

    Notes: The reinforcement of a natural rubber compound by various surface-modified precipitated silicas was compared. Compound physical properties were determined for two silicas differing in surface area and were used as controls to evaluate these silicas after surface modification by using either a bifunctional organosilane coupling agent (γ-mercaptopropyl-trimethoxysilane) or a new surface modification process. This new process is based on the in situ polymerization of organic monomers solubilized inside surfactant bilayers that are adsorbed onto the silica surface to afford silicas modified with styrene-butadiene and styrene-isoprene copolymers. Both surface modification processes afford materials that dramatically increase the compound cure rate, thereby significantly reducing T90 cure times, while also improving tensile properties, tear strength, abrasion resistance, and compression set of the cured compound. The silane-modified silica gives a higher flex-cracking resistance than do the silicas modified by the in situ polymerization of organic monomers, whereas these latter silicas significantly increase rebound resilience and offer greater overall improvements in rubber compound performance. The rubber compound physical properties obtained using the modified, higher surface area Hi-Sil® 255 silica are generally improved relative to those obtained using the modified Hi-Sil® 233 silica. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Summary Human lipocortin (annexin) 1, a member of the annexin family of phospholipid binding proteins, has previously been expressed in E. coli (Huh et al., 1990). To improve the expression level of lipocortin 1 in E. coli, several expression vectors containing either the PL or the Ptrc promoter were constructed. The highest expression level, up to 20 % of the total E. coli proteins, was obtained with plasmid pHT3. Plasmid pHT3 contains the pUC origin, the lipocortin 1 cDNA under Ptrc promoter, and the lacI gene.

    Notes: Summary A gene coding for amylase was cloned and sequenced from an alkalophilic Pseudomonas sp. KFCC 10818. The coding region for the amylase precursor contained 1,692 nucleotides. The presumed Shine-Dalgarno sequence, AAGG, was located at 8 nucleotides upstream from the ATG initiation codon. The precursor protein had a putative signal peptide of 25 amino acid residues at its amino terminus. The Pseudomonas amylase had four highly conserved regions as other α-amylases. The amylase expressed from E. coli harboring the Pseudomonas gene produced maltose and maltotriose from soluble starch.

    Notes: Abstract In the 1960s and 1970s, many European countries legalized several forms of gambling, especially slot machines, lotteries, casinos and bingo, in order to control illegal gambling and to obtain tax revenues for government. In this paper, we examine the status of research on problem and pathological gambling in three European countries: Germany, Holland and Spain. The results of the studies as well as the relationship between these studies and the expanding gaming industries, attitudes toward gambling in the general population, and the regulation and control of gaming in each country are discussed.

The results revealed that structures of the aggregated state of the copolymers depend closely on the biphenyl content (nb).
