    Notes: We report the performance of a type-I barium borate optical parametric amplifier pumped by 15 ps, 355 nm laser pulses. We show that it is possible to obtain narrowband ((approximately-equal-to)3 A(ring)), high-energy (≥200 μJ), widely tunable (0.4–2 μm) picosecond pulses with a maximum pump-to-signal energy conversion better than 30%.

    Notes: Met-enkephalin and β-endorphin induced a partial reversion of the dopamine inhibition of prolactin release from pituitary cells of lactating rats in primary culture. This effect of opiate peptides was dose-dependent with an EC50 of 40 ± 8 nM and 45 ± 7 nM and maximal blockade of dopamine inhibition of 60% and 68% for Met-enkephalin and β-endorphin, respectively. Naloxone antagonized the effect of Met-enkephalin with an EC50 of 22 ± 12 nM. Furthermore, this Met-enkephalin effect on dopamine inhibition of prolactin secretion appeared non-competitive since it reduced maximal inhibition without affecting the apparent affinity of dopamine. Finally, it should be noted that the two opiate peptides had no effect on spontaneous prolactin release.In electrophysiological experiments, local ejection of dopamine on tested cells induced an hyperpolarization concomitant with an increase of the membrane conductance. Ejection of Met-enkephalin or β-endorphin alone did not modify the electrical properties of the cells (resting potential, membrane conductance and excitability). In contrast, both peptides blocked in a reversible manner the dopamine-induced electrical responses. These effects were antagonized by naloxone. However, this interaction of opiatepeptides with dopamine electrical response was not observed on all cells tested. We conclude that the blocking effect of opiates on dopamine-induced hyperpolarization may account, at least in part, for the ability of these peptides to interact with dopamine inhibition of prolactin release.

    Notes: Abstract. Maize seedlings (Zea mays L. John Innes F1 hybrid) were grown in a greenhouse in l-m-long tubes of soil. When the plants were well established, water was withheld from half of the tubes. Control plants were watered every day during the 20-d experimental period. The soil drying treatment resulted in a substantial restriction of stomatal conductance and a limitation in shoot growth, even though there was no detectable difference in the water relations of watered and unwatered plants. From day 7 of the soil drying treatment, xylem ABA concentrations (measured using the sap exuded from detopped plants) were substantially increased in unwatered plants compared to values recorded with sap from plants watered every day. Measurements of water potential through the profile of unwatered soil suggest that xylem ABA concentrations reflects the extent of soil drying. Leaf ABA content was a much less sensitive indicator of the effect of soil drying and during the whole of experimental period there was no significant difference between ABA concentration in leaves of well watered and unwatered plants. In a second set of experiments, ABA was fed to part of the roots of potted maize plants to manipulate xylem ABA concentration. These manipulations suggested that the increases in ABA concentration in xylem sap, which resulted from soil drying, were adequate to explain the observed variation in stomatal conductance and might also explain the restriction in leaf growth rate. These results are discussed in the light of recent work which suggests that stomatal responses to soil drying are partly attributable to an as-yet unidentified inhibitor of stomatal opening.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of ethephon on stomatal resistance, water potential, osmotic potential, turgor potential, and ethylene production were determined on leaves of a drought-resistant (KS 65) and a drought-sensitive (IA 25) genotype of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] grown under wellwatered or drought-stressed conditions. With both sufficient and limited water supply, ethephon had no effect on the adaxial, abaxial, or total stomatal resistance of either genotype. For both water treatments, the adaxial stomatal resistance of the drought-sensitive genotype was higher than that of the drought-resistant genotype. Ethephon increased the amount of ethylene produced by the plants under both levels of water. For plants with sufficient water, water potentials of both genotypes were lowered by ethephon. Ethephon had no effect on the water potentials under drought or on the osmotic potentials under either water regime. With drought, the turgor potential of the drought-sensitive genotype, but not that of the drought-resistant, was increased by ethephon.

    Notes: Abstract This paper describes an on-line fault diagnosis system which diagnoses faults in a pilot scale mixing process using on-line measurements. Fault detection and fault diagnosis is performed based on a qualitative model of the mixing process. The qualitative model provides a set of constraints for the system being diagnosed. Once it is violated, a particular fault is detected. Since most of the information used by the diagnosis system comes from on-line measurements, it is important to determine whether sensors are working normally or not before considering failures of other components. Sensor failure is mainly diagnosed from heuristic considerations, while the failures of other components are diagnosed from a procedure of hypothesis generation, qualitative simulation, and comparison. Based on a hypothesis, the behaviour of the system being diagnosed is simulated from its qualitative model and is compared with the actual measurements. Depending upon whether they conflict or not, the hypothesis is denied or retained. A new approach for reducing the ambiguity in qualitative simulation is described. Ambiguity is reduced by taking account of the information on the order of magnitude relations between different physical variables.

    Notes: Summary Three cell clones producing large numbers of infectious or noninfectious particles of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), designated M 10/LAV-2, M 16/LAV-3, and MT/LAV-17, were isolated from persistently HIV-1-infected MT-4 cells. In M 10/LAV-2, the HIV-1 proteins were defective in the cleavage ofgag precursor protein, and the particles were doughnutshaped with a double-ring structure. These particles were produced by budding at the cell surface from crescentic structures followed by the formation of double-ring structures. The viral proteins in M 16/LAV-3 were defective in the cleavage ofenv precursor protein. The morphology of the virus particles was intact, and an electron dense bar-shaped core was seen inside a single-ring enveloped structure. The intact particles were released from the cell surface by a budding process in which crescent shape structures first appeared at the cell membrane, then subsequently just before release matured to a complete structure with an electron dense core. In MT/LAV-17, the synthesis of HIV-1 proteins was normal, and the particles were teardrop-shaped with an intact core structure. These particles were produced by budding with an electron dense core at the cell surface. Thus, it was suggested that the morphological maturation of HIV-1 particles was completed just before release from the cell surface in several cell clones producing HIV-1 particles of different morphology.
