    Notizen: Abstract We report the pathological changes in skeletal muscle from a patient with acute adult T cell leukemia (ATL). HTLV-I provirus was detected in infiltrating cells using in situ polymerase chain reaction in frozen sections. Furthermore, aberrant expression of the p53 protein was observed in the infiltrating cells. As p53 protein was not observed in mononuclear inflammatory cells in patients with polymyositis, expression of the p53 protein was considered to be one of the characteristic findings in ATL cells. This is the first direct detection of ATL cells in skeletal muscle.

    Notizen: Abstract C70 single crystals, free from solvent contamination, were grown via vapor phase transport technique. The (0001) face of the C70 crystal was imaged with Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) under ambient atmosphere. Low-resolution images of a freshly prepared crystal revealed well-ordered faceted regions with multiple terraces extending over a region of several hundred square nanometers. The terraced structure in the images indicates that the crystals formed as a layer growth. In the high-resolution images, C70 molecules were resolved in a hexagonal close packed (hcp) structure with an average center-to-center distance of 10.5±0.5 Å. After one month's exposure to the ambient atmosphere, the molecules rearranged into a mixed structure consisting of hcp and face centered cubic (fcc) regions.

    Notizen: Abstract The effect of polymerization conditions on the molecular weight of polystyrene grafted onto silica obtained from the radical graft polymerization initiated by azo and peroxyester groups introduced onto the surface was investigated. The molecular weight of polystyrene grafted onto silica obtained from the radical graft polymerization initiated by surface azo and peroxyester groups decreased with decreasing monomer concentration and polymerization temperature. The molecular weight of polystyrene was found to be controlled to some extent by the addition of a chain transfer agent. The molecular weight of grafted chain on silica surface obtained from the graft polymerization initiated by surface radicals formed by photodecomposition of azo groups was considerably smaller than that by thermal decomposition. The number of grafted polystyrene in photopolymeriztion, however, was much larger than that in thermal polymerization. These results are explained by the blocking of surface radicals formed on the silica surface by previously grafted polymer chain: when the decomposition of surface azo and peroxyester groups proceed instantaneously at the initial stage of the polymerization, the number of grafted polymer chains increased.

    Notizen: Abstract The solvent extraction of technetium from urine with TBP has been investigated. The distribution ratio of technetium was determined as a function of HCl concentration and reaction time. The distribution ratio in the HCl-TBP system containing urine is consistently lower than that without urine. The chemical forms of technetium in urine, analyzed by paper chromatography, indicated that pertechnetate was reduced in the presence of HCl and that the reduction of pertechnetate was enhanced by urine. The observed decrease in the distribution ratio was attributed to the enhanced reduction of pertechnetate by urine.

    Notizen: Abstract Active electrode materials for a new zinc electrowinning process, in which the thermodynamic cell voltage is about half that of the conventional process by replacing oxygen evolution by anodic oxidation of SO2 produced in the zinc smelting process have been studied. Immersion in HF solution and subsequent cyclic voltammetry (CV) in sulfuric acid are known to be effective surface activation treatments of the amorphous alloy electrodes. The galvanostatic cathodic reduction (CR) treatment was applied to obtain further activation for sulfite oxidation for HF- and CV-treated electrodes prepared from amorphous nickel-valve metal-platinum group metal alloys. This treatment has been found to be effective in enhancing the activity. Among the amorphous Ni-40Nb alloys containing platinum group elements, the platinum-containing electrode showed the highest catalytic activity, which was higher than that of platinized platinum. Furthermore, the electrocatalytic activities of CR-treated electrodes prepared from amorphous alloys containing platinum and rhodium, and platinum and ruthenium were higher than that of the electrode containing only platinum. According to XPS analysis of the amorphous Ni-40Nb-1Pt-1Ru alloy specimen the enrichment of platinum and ruthenium occurred by CV treatment, and a small amount of oxidized platinum and ruthenium species remained on the electrode surfaces, but most of them were cathodically reduced to the metallic state by CR treatment. High catalytic activities for sulfite oxidation can be attributed to the metallic state of platinum and ruthenium contained in the alloy electrodes, even though the activity of these electrocatalysts is higher than that of pure Pt or Ru.

    Notizen: Abstract Transport properties of transition metal sulphides have been discussed in terms of chemical and self-diffusion coefficients. It has been shown that in the case of highly non-stoichiometric sulphides (Co1−yS) the chemical diffusion coefficient may easily be obtained from thermogravimetric measurements of re-equilibration kinetics. If the non-stoichiometry and thereby defect concentration is low (Mn1−yS), the re-equilibration kinetics is difficult or impossible to follow thermogravimetrically, and the electrical conductivity method can be applied. If the non-stoichiometry of a given metal sulphide is known as a function of temperature and sulphur activity, chemical diffusion data may successfully be utilized for calculation of parabolic rate constants of metal sulphidation and to obtain better insight into the growth mechanism of the sulphide scale. Using this procedure it has been shown that the sulphide scales on cobalt and manganese grow by the outward volume diffusion of cations. The chemical diffusion coefficient may also be used in the calculation of the self-diffusion coefficient of cations (or anions) if the non-stoichiometry data of a given sulphide are available. It has been shown that the self-diffusion coefficients of manganese in Mn1−yS obtained in such a way are in full agreement with those determined experimentally.
