    Notes: Summary It has been postulated that oxidatively modified low-density lipoprotein (LDL) contributes to the genesis of atherosclerosis. Ubiquinone has been suggested to be an important physiological lipid-soluble antioxidant and is found in LDL fractions in the blood. We measured plasma level of ubiquinone using high-performance liquid chromatography and plasma levels of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides in 245 normal subjects (186 males, 59 females) and in 104 patients (55 males, 49 females) who had coronary artery disease not receiving pravastatin and 29 patients (12 males, 17 females) receiving pravastatin. In the normal subjects, the plasma ubiquinone levels did not vary with age. In the patient groups, the plasma total cholesterol and LDL levels were higher and the plasma ubiquinone level lower than in the normal subject group. The LDL/ubiquinone ratio was higher in the patient groups. We found that ubiquinone level, either alone or when expressed in relation to LDL levels, was significantly lower in the patient groups compared with the normal subject group. The 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG CoA) reductase inhibitor is thought to prevent atherosclerosis, however, it also inhibits ubiquinone production. The present study revealed that HMG CoA reductase inhibitor decreased plasma cholesterol level, and that it did not improve either the ubiquinone level or the LDL/ubiquinone ratio. From these results, the LDL/ubiquinone ratio is likely to be a risk factor for atherogenesis, and administration of ubiquinone to patients at risk might be needed.

    Notes: Summary MR images of four patients with a thickened filum terminale showing a fat signal are presented. There were no related symptoms and no evidence of tethering. The thickened fatty filum terminale seemed to be a developmental anomaly and without clinical significance. As the incidence of this anomaly was 0.24% in our series, knowledge of its possible presence of this anomaly is important for routine reviews of MR image.

    Notes: Summary Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of wallerian degeneration in the brain stem was studied in 30 hemiplegic patients within 12 months of ictus. As early as 25 days after the ictus, decreased signal intensities on proton-density (PD)-weighted images were observed in the brain stem ipsilaterally. This hypointensity gradually approached an isointense stage during 70–80 days after the ictus, abnormal intensities were not detected in any pulse sequence. We termed this phenomenon “Fogging effect of wallerian degeneration”. In later stages, at least 81 days after the ictus, increased signal intensities on T2-weighted images, with or without decreased signal intensities on T1-weighted images, were observed in the brain stem, ipsilaterally. Finally, at least six months after the ictus, mild shrinkage of the ipsilateral brain stem was newly detected on the T1-weighted images. MR imaging has proven to be a sensitive diagnostic modality for evaluating wallerian degeneration in the brain stem.

    Notes: Summary Serial magnetic resonance (MR) imagings of two autopsied patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) are presented. Both patients showed a dramatic progression of brain atrophy. The initial MR imagings were, however, interpreted as normal except for localized mild cortical atrophy in one patient. When a normal MR image is obtained in a demented middle-aged or aged patient, CJD may still need to be ruled out: follow up MR imaging may be useful.

    Notes: Abstract Magnetic resonance (MR) images of seven patients with olivary degeneration caused by cerebellar or brain stem haemorrhages were reviewed. In four patients with cerebellar haemorrhage, old haematomas were identified as being located in the dentate nucleus; the contralateral inferior olivary nuclei were hyperintense on proton-density- and T2-weighted images. In two patients with pontine haemorrhages, the old haematomas were in the tegmentum and the ipsilateral inferior olivary nuclei, which were hyperintense. In one case of midbrain haemorrhage, the inferior olivary nuclei were hyperintense bilaterally. The briefest interval from the ictus to MRI was 2 months. Hypertrophic olivary nuclei were observed only at least 4 months after the ictus. Olivary degeneration after cerebellar or brain stem haemorrhage should not be confused with ischaemic, neoplastic, or other primary pathological conditions of the medulla.

    Notes: Summary It was demonstrated that G-bands are unequivocally present in plant chromosomes, in contrast to what had been formerly believed by plant cytologists. Maize chromosomes prepared by an enzymatic maceration method and treated with trypsin or SDS showed clear G-bands spreading along the chromosomes. The most critical point during the G-banding procedures was the post-fixation with glutaraldehyde solution. Banding patterns were processed by using the chromosome image analyzing system and a clearer image was obtained. Gbanding technique and the image manipulation method described here can be applied to many plant species, and would contribute new information in the field of plant cytology and genetics.

    Notes: Abstract The problem of an edge dislocation in the vicinity of an elliptical inhomogeneity is solved analytically in the form of infinite series. The inhomogeneous inclusion is assumed to be either perfectly bonded or sliding along the interface with the surrounding matrix. The problem is formulated in terms of Papkovich-Neuber displacement potentials and the results for the perfectly bonded and sliding interface are compared. The effects of the inclusion/matrix shear moduli ratio, inclusion/dislocation relative distance and inclusion aspects ratio on the interface stresses and the dislocation force are evaluated.

    Notes: Abstract Plants of Gracilaria sp.(chorda type), which grow along the coast of Uranouchi Inlet in Tosa Bay, southern Japan, showed the highest biomass in the summer (26 °C to 31 °C) and spring season (15.1 °C to 24.9 °C). Maximum biomass was 6952 g m−2 in July, but gradually decreased in the autumn (30.5 °C in September to 20 °C in November) and winter (19.5 °C in December to 14.9 °C in February). Variation in yields and gel strength of the agars, were shown to depend on the time in the season. After alkali treatment (5% NaOH, 2 h) at three different temperatures (70, 80, and 90 °C), the agars showed gel strengths essentially that of commercial grade agars, with the best gel obtained at 80 °C. Maximum gel strength (1455 g cm−2 of 1.5% agar gel) occurred in winter when the biomass and agar yield were low. Minimum gel strength was in spring. Gel strength was inversely correlated with agar yield, but was positively correlated with apparent viscosity. Maximum viscosity was 40 cP. in December. Gelling temperatures, pH of 1.5% agar gel, and moisture content in agars showed little variation.

    Notes: Abstract The authors examined the usefulness of sodium chloride as a nondiffusible indicator during the first passage through dogs' lungs, before and after increased-permeability pulmonary oedema produced by an intravenous injection of alloxan. With an injection of a mixture of ice-cold 3 per cent sodium chloride and indocyanine green dye (a nondiffusible reference indicator), the authors simultaneously recorded three dilution curves from the aortic root: dye dilution, thermal and blood electrical conductivity dilution curves in six dogs. The mean transit time of sodium chloride in the conductivity dilution curve was significantly different from, but fairly equal to, that of indocyanine green dye (6·2±1·4 s (mean±SD) against 6·5±1·4s(p〈0.01) in the baseline period, and 7·6±1·9 s against 8·4±2·1 s (p〈0·01) in the oedema period, respectively). The calculated extravascular lung thermal volume with the thermal and conductivity dilution method (Y, ml kg−1) correlated well with the gravimetrically determined extravascular lung mass in a total of 12 dogs, including six other dogs without intervention (x, g kg−1) (y=0·72x±3·03, r=0·96). The authors conclude that sodium chloride is useful as a nondiffusible indicator in the first passage through the lungs, and that the thermal and conductivity dilution method is also useful for measuring extravascular lung water mass.
