Notes: Abstract The effects of toxin II (AaH II) isolated from the scorpion Androtonus australis Hector on sodium current in neuroblastoma X glioma NG 108-15 hybrid cells were analysed under patch clamp conditions in the whole cell configuration. AaH II (70 nM)_induced a maintained sodium current, as well as increasing both fast and slow inactivation time constants and the amplitude of the peak current. This latter effect occurred via a shift of the activation-voltage curve towards negative voltage values by about 9 mV. Oleic acid (5 μM), which had no effect on INa under control conditions, decreased the AaH II-induced maintained current. It also reversed, or prevented the increase of the peak current induced by AaH II. However, it neither prevented nor modified the AaH II-induced increase in inactivation time constants. The binding of the toxin to its specific site and the number of binding sites for AaH II were not significantly modified by oleic acid. The oleic acid-induced effects could not be related to the activation of protein kinase C since PMA, a potent activator of this enzyme, did not produce oleic acid-like effects. From these results, it is concluded that AaH II has several independent effects on sodium channels, some of which could be modulated by the lipid environment of sodium channels in the membrane.

Notes: Abstract In order to investigate some properties of nitrogen implantation in tungsten carbides, massive carbides WC and W2C were prepared by bulk diffusion of carbon in pure tungsten. Isothermal analysis of W-C diffusion couples was performed to determine the optimal conditions for their preparation. Nitrogen implantation was executed with an isotope separator. The samples were analysed by using the15N (p, αγ)12C nuclear reaction and were wear tested. The increase of wear resistance was shown to be effective and the importance of parameters such as fluence or loading conditions was underlined. Nitrogen migration during abrasive wear occurred on a very small scale and was dependent on the nature of the carbide.

Notes: Abstract The icosahedral quasicrystals i-AlMn isomorphically suostituted by 28 at.% Fe or by (CrFe) are studied for the first time by in-field Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS) in order to determine the sign and asymmetry parameter of the dominant EFG term. In addition, the orthorhombic o-Al(MnFe) and cubic α- and hexagonal β-Al(MnFe)Si phases are studied. We show that previous MS results are inadequate to determine if there are two sites in the i-AlMn structure in the ratio of the golden number. Our results for i-Al(MnFe) show that the dominant EFG is negative, with asymmetry parameter of about 0.6. For i-Al(CrFe), essentially no deviations are found from the model of Czjzek or the Gaussian isotropic model. The β phase is found to have a very similar quadrupole effect as that in i-Al(MnFe).

Notes: Summary The uptake and distribution of15NH 4 + ,15NO 3 − and15N2 was studied in greenhouse-grown beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) with a commercial cultivar and 2 recombinant inbred backcross lines;15N was supplied in the nutrient solution at the R3 (50% bloom) stage. Plants were harvested 1, 5 and 10 days after treatment, and were separated into nodules, roots, stems, mature leaflets, immature leaflets, and flowers/fruits. All 3 lines showed rapid increases in the N content of flowers/fruits after the R3 stage. However, the percentage N in these tissues decreased after the R3 stage. One of the recombinant lines showed a greater uptake of NH 4 + than the other 2 lines. Rates of15N2 fixation and NO 3 − uptake were similar for all 3 lines, N2 fixation estimated from total N content showed the 2 recombinant lines with 24 and 34 percent greater activity than the commercial cultivar. Distribution of15N at the whole plant level was similar for all 3 lines for a similar N source.15NO 3 − was transported first to leaflets and the label then moved into flowers/fruits. Transport of fixed N2 was from the nodules to roots, stems and into flowers/fruits; usually less than 10 percent entered the leaflets. This indicates that N2 fixation furnishes N directly to flowers/fruits with over 50 percent of the fixed N being deposited into flowers/fruits within 5 days after treatment.
