    Notes: Summary The turnover time of the epithelial cells of a normal eustachian tube was estimated in guinea pigs by means of lightmicroscopic autoradiography with thymidine-H3. The cell migration from the basal layer to the tubal lumen was chased by sacrificing the animals at different intervals after thymidine-H administration. This study revealed that the generative cells were the basal cells in the tubal epithelium and that the different types of maturative cells in the epithelium have a different life span. The turnover time of non-ciliated secretory cells was about 145 hrs (about 6 days), while that of ciliated cells and goblet cells more than 6 days.

    Description / Table of Contents: Übersicht Es wird die Möglichkeit untersucht, die Fließeigenschaften von Metallen unter hohen Temperaturen und bei zyklischer Belastung vorauszubestimmen. Wichtigste Voraussetzung ist dafür, daß die Fließfunktion als eine lineare Summe der Fließfunktion im vorhergehenden Zustand und der Fließfunktion durch die plastische Dehnungszunahme in diesem Zustand ausgedrückt werden kann. Die vorgeschlagene allgemeine Theorie wurde auf den Sonderfall der Yoshimuraschen Fließbedingungen angewandt. Es wurden an dünnwandigen Proben zyklische Spannungs-Torsions-Versuche durchgeführt. Gleichzeitig wurde eine zyklischinduzierte gerichtete Dehnung untersucht. Experimentelle und theoretische Ergebnisse stimmen gut überein.
    Notes: Summary A method to predict the yield conditions of metal at elevated temperature subjected to cyclic loading is presented in this paper. The main assumption made herein is that the yield function can be expressed as the linear sum of the yield function at the preceding stage and the one associated with the plastic strain increment at the present stage. The proposed general theory was applied to the special case of Yoshimura's yield condition. Cyclic tension-torsion tests were conducted on thin-walled tubular specimens; and simultaneously, the cyclically induced ratcheting strain was examined. Good correlation was obtained between experimental and theoretical results.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Geprüft wurde ein embryonales Organkultursystem für carcinogene Untersuchungen in vitro. Dabei fanden murine Sarkomaviren (MSV-M) und 3-Methylcholanthren (MCA) Verwendung. Die Behandlung wurde am embryonalen Nierengewebe von CBA/H-T6 Mäusen durchgeführt. MSV-M Gabe führte weder zu einer Hemmung der Glomerulogenese noch zu einer frühen malignen Transformation. Die Behandlung des gleichen Gewebes mit MCA verzögerte dagegen die Glomerulogenese erheblich, führte jedoch ebenfalls nicht zur Induktion einer frühen malignen Transformation. Erst nach sehr langen Überlebenszeiten in vitro entstanden bei je einer MSV-Mund MCA-behandelten und bei zwei unbehandelten Kulturen transformierte Zellen, die nach Transplantation auf neugeborene CBA/H-T6 Mäuse malignes Wachstum zeigten. Auffällig waren dabei die histologisch unterschiedlichen Differenzierungsformen der Tumoren.
    Notes: Summary With the aim of expanding knowledge on the pathogenesis of nephroblastomata, an embryological organ culture system (Grobstein, 1956) was tested for its applicability to in vitro carcinogenesis experiments by using murine sarcoma virus (MSV-M) and 3-methylcholanthrene (MCA). Treatment of CBA/H-T6 mouse metanephrogenic mesenchyma with MSV-M at the pretubular stage neither disturbed the glomerulogenesis nor induced rapid malignant transformation. Treatment of the same tissues with MCA considerably inhibited the glomerulogenesis but failed to also induce rapid malignant transformation. However, one MSV-M, one MCA and two untreated cultures showed malignant transformation after prolonged survival in vitro and produced different histological types of tumours upon transplantation into newborn CBA/H-T6 mice.

Les données collectées sont analysées en terme de l'éxposant m (qui représente la pente de la portion linéaire de la relation log(da/dN)-log ΔK, en tenant compte de la microstructure, de la résistance du matériau, de la ténacité à la rupture et de l'épaisseur de l'éprouvette. La vitesse moyenne de propagation d'une fissure de fatigue dans le cas des aciers ductiles dans la fourchette entre la vitesse intermédiaire de fissuration et le niveau critique, et les valeurs correspondantes de seuil à R=0, ΔK th0 peuvent être représentées par la relation:da/dN = 1.700 × 10-4(ΔK103.6)m - 10-6etΔK th0 = 103.6(5.88 × 10-3)1/m,où (da/dN) et ΔK sont mesurés en unités de mm/cycle et en kgf/mm3/2 respectivement. En contraste, dans le cas d'aciers extrèmement fragiles avec des valeurs K IC en dessous de 200 kgf/mm3/2 (la rupture se produit par une séparation intergranulaire), ces relations sont données par:da/dN = 2.893 × 10-5(ΔK/49.94)m - 2.5 × 10-7etΔK th0 = 49.94(8.64 × 10-3)1/m.
    Notes: Abstract Literature (mainly in Japan) relating to fatigue-crack-growth-data at R=0 in an air environment for a wide range of steels is reviewed with particular attention to the threshold stress intensity, ΔK th. The collected data are analyzed in terms of the exponent, m(the slope of the linear portion of the log(da/dN)-logΔD relationship) by taking account of microstructure, material strength, fracture toughness and specimen thickness. The mean rate of fatigue crack growth for ductile steels in the range from the intermediate growth rate to threshold level and the relevant threshold values at R=0, ΔK th0, can be represented asda/dN = 1.700 × 10-4(ΔK103.6)m - 10-6andΔK th0 = 103.6(5.88 × 10-3)1/m,where (da/dN) and ΔK are measured by the units of mm/cycle and kgf/mm3/2, respectively. Contrary to this, in the case of extremely brittle steels with K IC-value below 200 kgf/mm3/2 (the fracture occurs by the intergranular separation), the relationships are given byda/dN = 2.893 × 10-5(ΔK/49.94)m - 2.5 × 10-7andΔK th0 = 49.94(8.64 × 10-3)1/m.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Les deux paramètres, C et m, qui caractérisent l'équation de Paris pour la propagation des fissures de fatigue sont expliqués en relation avec le concept de fermeture d'une fissure suggéré par Elber. On propose que la grandeur du changement effectif du facteur d'intensité de contrainte ΔK nécessaire à l'accroissement d'une fissure figure à une puissance deuxième dans une corrélation avec le taux de croissance. La croissance d'une fissure est essentiellement déterminée par le dommage cumulatif infligé au matériau dans la zône de déformation plastique cyclique au voisinage de l'extrémité de la fissure; il est relativement insensible aux valeurs appliquées de ΔK et aux propriétés mécaniques du matériau. Toutefois, le comportement à la fermeture d'une fissure devrait dépendre à la fois du taux de contrainte et des propriétés du matériau. Il est donc conclu que le paramètre exponentiel m représente principalement la dépendance du comportement à la fermeture d'une fissure par rapport à ΔK. A titre d'exemple, dans le cas de m=4, le niveau de fermeture de la fissure augmente linéairement avec un accroissement de ΔK, tandis que, dans le cas de m=2, il demeure constant. On suggère que les déformations cycliques à l'extrémité de la fissure peuvent varier avec ΔK et modifient ainsi en premier lieu le comportement à la fermeture de la fissure plutôt que le processus d'accumulation de dommages dans la zône plastique.
    Notes: Abstract The two parameters, C and m, which characterize the Paris equation for fatigue crack growth are explained in relation to the crack closure concept suggested by Elber. It is proposed that the range of effective incremental change in stress intensity factor (ΔK) needed for crack growth should have a second power correlation with the growth rate. The crack growth is essentially determined by cumulative damage to the material in cycled plastic zone near the crack tip, and is relatively insensitive to the applied ΔK-values and the mechanical properties of material. However, the crack closure behavior is expected to depend on both the stress range and the material properties. Thus it is concluded that the exponent parameter m reflects mainly the dependency of crack closure behavior on ΔK. For example, in the case of m=4 the crack opening level increases linearly with increase in ΔK, while in the case of m=2 it remains constant. It is suggested that the cyclic straining at the crack tip possibly varies with ΔK, thus changing primarily the crack closure behavior rather than the damage accumulation process in the plastic zone.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Gleichungen des mittleren Temperaturfeldes werden von einem statistischen Standpunkt aus betrachtet, wobei die Materialkonstanten Zufallsfunktionen des Ortes sind. Einige reduzierte Formen der Feldgleichungen werden abgeleitet unter der Voraussetzung, daß keine Korrelation zwischen den Materialkonstanten und der lokalen Isotropie existiert, zusätzlich zur statistischen Homogenität und Isotropie. Die Beziehungen des mittleren Feldes und die tatsächlichen Materialkonstanten werden ebenfalls diskutiert.
    Notes: Summary The governing equation of the mean temperature field was discussed from the statistical point of view when the material constants were random functions of position. Some reduced forms of the field equation were derived when no correlations existed between the material constants, and local isotropy was assumed in addition to statistical homogeneity and isotropy. The relation of the mean fields and the effective material constants were also discussed.

    Notes: Abstract A method of low-temperature nuclear orientation of bulk amount of Bi was developed utilizing a ferromagnetic compound BiMn. The radioactive isotopes of Bi,207Bi and206Bi, were oriented by this method and the hyperfine field at Bi in BiMn was determined to be ±(940 −130 +180 ) kOe. No reorientation effect was observed at the isomers in207Pb and206Pb around 30 mK. The E2/M1 multipole mixing ratios of several γ-transitions in206Pb were determined.
