Notizen: The need to control and manage the effects of urban, industrial and agricultural development on Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake, led to the formation of the Lake Biwa Comprehensive Development Project (LBCDP). This article describes the nature and effects of the development, how the LBCDP was conceptualized, implemented and managed, and comments on its effectiveness. Although the basic objective of the project was to promote development of the Keihanshin region by providing additional water, other important objectives included the conservation of the natural environment, the promotion of public welfare, and the restoration of water quality. To achieve objectives on a sustainable basis, extensive political, legislative, social, technological and environmental matters needed comprehensive consideration. This article considers such matters in detail.

Notizen: Abstract A magnetodynamic model to deal with the acceleration and collimation of jets as a part of the global process of gravitational contraction of the magnetized gas to the central gravitator is discussed. We first review its application to the star forming jet case with several observational supporting evidence. Then, a justification will be given for the extension of this to the AGN jet case, despite of the difference in orders of magnitudes in the scales as well as in the physical parameters. The results of actual application of this magnetodynamic mechanism to the AGN case will be presented together with the discussions for the origin of the radio lobes and hotspots, and we show that this mechanism can explain the enhancement of accretion and the formation of the jet + lobe system consistently with the genetic consideration of the system.

Notizen: Abstract. To identify individual chromosomes of a frog karyotype by their fluorescence banding patterns, chromosomes were stained with actinomycin D and 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) after incorporation of BrdU during the late S-phase. The chromosomes of three Rana species which were selected for this study (R. ridibunda, R. lessonae and R. japonica) showed well-defined late replication bands. The fluorescence patterns obtained were the reverse of those produced by a 4Na-EDTA Giemsa-staining technique. Fluorescence patterns of the two water frog species (R. ridibunda and R. lessonae) were similar to each other, except for the different fluorescence of the centromeric heterochromatin, which gave extremely bright signals in R. ridibunda but no signal in R. lessonae. Experiments also showed differences between the fluorescence patterns of R. lessonae chromosome 13 in the Italian and Luxembourgian populations. These results sho w that the fluorescence replication banding using actinomycin D and DAPI is very effective in identifying individual frog chromosomes and detecting their structural changes.

Notizen: Abstract  If activation of the p53 gene is involved in the progression or metastasis of colon cancer, it may affect the angiogenic phenotype in vivo. To verify this hypothesis, we studied the correlation between p53 accumulation and expression of thrombospondin-1 (TSP1) in colon cancer specimens. Levels of TSP1 gene expression were estimated by Northern blotting in 65 colon cancers. Accumulation of p53 and the distribution of TSP1 protein were evaluated immunohistochemically. Various levels of TSP1 gene expression were seen in colon cancers, while p53 accumulation was confirmed in 42 of the 65 colon cancers. The level of TSP1 gene expression demonstrated a significant inverse correlation with p53 accumulation in colon cancer. Colon cancer cells expressed TSP1 protein and p53 accumulation reciprocally in the same nests. These results suggest that alterations in the tumour suppressor gene p53 may inhibit TSP1 expression in colon cancer.

Notizen: Abstract We conducted a multiple regression analysis on the surgical results (minimum follow-up of 5 years) of 55 patients who underwent expansive open-door laminoplasty (open-door ELAP) for cervical myelopathy due to ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) in order to determine statistically the impact of factors influencing the results. Duration of myelopathy was found to be a significant factor indicating poor results, while progression of ossification and age at the time of surgery were significant factors indicating deterioration. Three other factors (preoperative severity of myelopathy, degree of spinal canal expansion and changes of the curve indices before and after surgery) did not have a significant influence on the results. To improve the surgical results, it is thus essential to operate on patients as soon as they develop symptoms of myelopathy. There exists a certain limitation in posterior decompression for OPLL including open-door ELAP until prevention of the progression of ossification becomes possible.

Notizen: Abstract Although cytosolic Ca2+ accumulation plays a pivotal role in delayed neuronal death, there have been no investigations on the role of the cellular Ca2+ export system in this novel phenomenon. To clarify the function of the Ca2+-pump in delayed neuronal death, the plasma membrane Ca2+-ATPase activity of CA1 pyramidal neurons was investigated ultracytochemically in normal and ischemic gerbil hippocampus. To correlate enzyme activity with delayed neuronal death, histochemical detection was performed at various recirculation times after 5 min of ischemia produced by occlusion of the bilateral carotid arteries. At 10 min after ischemia, CA1 pyramidal neurons showed weak Ca2+-ATPase activity. Although enzyme activity had almost fully recovered 2 h after ischemia, it was reduced again 6 h after ischemia. Thereafter, Ca2+-ATPase activity on the plasma membrance of CA1 pyramidal neurons decreased progressively, losing its localization on day 3. On day 4 following ischemia, reaction products were diffusely scattered throughout the whole cell body. Our results indicate that, after once having recovered from ischemic damage, severe disturbance of the membrane Ca2+ export system proceeds from the early stage of delayed neuronal death and disturbs the re-export of accumulated cytosolic Ca2+, which might contribute to delayed neuronal death. Occult disruption of Ca2+ homeostasis seems to occur from an extremely early stage of delayed neuronal death in CA1 pyramidal cells.
