    Notes: Abstract The electrochemical behaviour of copper in aqueous potassium ethylxanthate (KEX) is studied by using potentiodynamic techniques at different sweep rates, complemented with SEM and EDAX. In NaCl solutions a cuprous xanthate film is formed at low potentials, the initial stage of this reaction being the electroadsorption of KEX on copper competing with the adsorption of chloride ions and water. At low surface coverages for electroadsorbed KEX the electrodissolution of copper is partially inhibited as compared to plain NaCl solutions. As the KEX monolayer is completed, a tri-dimensional cuprous xanthate film grows in the electrode surface. On subsequent increase of the applied potential a complex anodic layer is formed leading to copper passivity. Passivity breakdown promoted by either chloride ions or electro-oxidation of the organic film can be observed when the potential exceeds a certain critical value.

    Notes: Summary The efficiency of caffeine at different concentration on the induction of binucleate cells in onion root-tip was studied. The drug effect is strongly depressed in the Ca++ and/or Mg++ presence at half-rate of maximum efficiency (0.04%), about 2 mM). We therefore conclude that both cations must play a role in plant cytokinesis.

    Notes: Summary During teleostean fin regeneration the actinotrichia, rods of a collagen-like protein, the elastoidin, are immersed in the blastema, maintaining their apical position. In this epimorphic event the latter fact might be achieved by either a cellular carriage or a continuous turn-over of these hyperpolimerized fibrils. By means of a 3H-proline pulse and radioautographic chase experiment of the isolated actinotrichia we have found a turn-over of collagen within the structure. From these and additional morphometric results, we present in this work an operational hypothesis of how gradually differentiating blastemal cells and an appropriately shaped basal lamina, can control the number and distribution of actinotrichia which might be under the balanced control of their synthesis and degradation.

    Notes: Abstract Ten patients with subhepatic fluid collections complicating laparoscopic Cholecystectomy were successfully treated by interventional radiological procedures. The series included five abscesses, three hematomas, one biloma, and one serous collection. Abdominal pain or fever developed from 3 to 21 days after the laparoscopic intervention. All patients were asymptomatic 72 h after percutaneous drainage and there were no complications related to the procedure. Subhepatic fluid accumulations are common findings after laparoscopic cholecystectomies and have been considered an unreliable indicator of infection or other postoperative complications. However, the significance of these collections should not be underestimated in symptomatic patients. In such cases we propose diagnostic aspiration and drainage, when necessary, to safely and promptly establish the precise diagnosis and treatment. More serious complications can be avoided by early percutaneous intervention.

    Notes: Summary Ultrastructural and histochemical studies performed on the skeletal elements of the tail fins of six representative species of teleosts enabled the following observations to be made. The electron microscopic pattern of amorphous substance deposition, and the diameter of the collagen fibrils, in lepidotrichia closely resemble those which are typical of cartilage. In addition, lepidotrichia contain chondroitin sulfate AC as the only sulfated glycosaminoglycan, and this glycosaminoglycan shows high levels of interaction with collagen, both features being characteristic of cartilage. Furthermore, the histochemical data presented in this paper suggest that not all of the glycosaminoglycans present in lepidotrichia are bound to protein cores to form proteoglycans. Each actinotrichium consists of a single ultrastructural entity of remarkable width and, thus, is not composed of a bundle of discretely separated collagen fibrils but rather of hyperpolymerized collagen molecules. This aspect differs from the arrangement pattern of all the other interstitial collagens, suggesting that actinotrichia may contain a new type of collagen.

    Notes: Abstract The efficacy of 2′-deoxyguanosine (GdR) on the induction of binucleate cells in onion root tips was studied. GdR inhibits plant cytokinesis during the last part of the mitotic period. Apparently, this deoxynucleoside causes a considerable slowing down in the mitotic rate (50%) and also has a slight effect as an inhibitor of cytokinesis (30%). The effect on the mitotic rate was established with 1 mM colchicine (metaphase rate) and with 5 mM caffeine (telophase rate). Since 1 mM GdR has a remarkable potentiating action on inhibition of cytokinesis by caffeine, we postulate that GdR, or a phosphorylated derivative from it, inhibits cytokinesis by a similar mechanism as caffeine. According to our postulation, GdR interferes with a certain ATPase activity required for membrane fusion of the Golgi vesicles during plant cytokinesis.
