Notes: Commercial software systems intended to support the work of groups arenow freely available. However, uptake of these systems has beenrelatively poor and limited user experience has been reported. Presentssome experiences from a study of a network that explicitly aims toinvestigate the effectiveness of computer-supported co-operative work(CSCW) tools. Focuses on the currently hidden cost of managing thenetwork. Also explores the implications for CSCW systems development byoutlining an exploration of support for the management of a CSCWnetwork.

Notes: [Auszug] Conservation of gene order in vertebrates is evident after hundreds of millions of years of divergence, but comparisons of the Arabidopsis thaliana sequence to partial gene orders of other angiosperms (flowering plants) sharing common ancestry ∼170–235 million years ago yield ...

Notes: Percutaneous laser hot-tip recanalization of totally occluded superficial femoral arteries has previously been dependent on access to the superficial femoral artery via the common femoral artery. Certain subsets of disease do not permit this approach and thus make patients ineligible for this nonsurgical option. In order to extend the benefits of laser angioplasty to these patients, we have investigated the applicability of percutaneous popliteal artery puncture as an access point from which superficial femoral artery percutaneous laser balloon angioplasty can be performed. Twenty-one procedures were performed on 20 patients with total superficial femoral artery occlusions. Eighteen had successful recanalization (85%). All 18 recanalized vessels were patent at 3 weeks post procedure. Minor complications which did not require surgical or medical intervention occurred in nine patients. We concluded that a percutaneous popliteal approach to laser angioplasty of a totally occluded superficial femoral artery can be safe and effective in selected patients.

Notes: Several major epidemiological studies have reported significant mortality rates (SMRs) for both rare cancers (soft tissue sarcoma, non-Hodgkin's, lymphoma, liver) and the more common cancers (lung, colon, etc), all allegedly caused by TCDD. In this paper, we use the potency of TCDD in animals to establish a plausible worst case cancer risk and ask whether its likely that TCDD is responsible for the epidemiological findings assuming the animal carcinogenic potency is applicable to the conditions of human exposure. Two new features of the technique are the use of measured TCDD blood levels in both animals and humans for dose scale-up and the calculation of an integrated life-time exposure for the exposed workers using measured blood levels. On the basis of the stated assumptions it appears unlikely that any of the major epidemiological studies, with the possible exception of the NIOSH study(1)have adequate power to detect the common cancers potentially caused by TCDD.

Notes: Using the Rouse/Zimm model for polymers, we have derived the low field dynamics for a flexible polymer in transient electric birefringence (TEB). Three orientation mechanisms were included; a permanent dipole from fixed charges, a local induced dipole dependent on the local conformation, and a global induced dipole dependent on the global conformation. The rise, decay, and reverse pulse behavior have been determined for all three, independently and combined. The condensed ion theory of Manning has been used to describe the global orientation mechanism of DNA. We find good agreement for the steady state birefringence and the predictions from theory with no adjustable parameters.

Notes: We report 105 °C continuous-wave, electrically pumped operation of a 1526 nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser. An InP/InGaAsP active region was wafer bonded to GaAs/AlGaAs mirrors, with a superlattice barrier to reduce the number of nonradiative recombination centers in the bonded active region. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We investigate quantum efficiency limitations in InGaAsP/InP multiquantum-well (MQW) laser diodes emitting at 1.5 μm. At room temperature, the internal differential efficiency above threshold is found to be reduced mainly by increasing Auger recombination and spontaneous emission within the quantum wells. These carrier loss increments are commonly assumed negligible due to MQW carrier density clamping. Even with clamped average carrier density, increasing nonuniformity of the quantum well carrier population leads to enhanced losses. We analyze these loss enhancements using an advanced laser simulation software. Excellent agreement between measurements and simulations is obtained. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this letter, a passive microring-resonator-coupled semiconductor laser structure is proposed. The weakly coupled high-Q microring resonator provides a strong mode-selection filter and could considerably extend the effective cavity length of a conventional Fabry–Perot laser. The side-mode suppression ratio, the linewidth and the frequency chirp of this laser are dramatically improved comparing to distributed feedback and distributed Bragg reflector lasers. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
