Notes: Abstract The algorithm CN makes use of normalized functions. Therefore the original algorithm, developed for the California-Nevada region, can be directly applied, without adjustment of the parameters, to the determination of the Time of Increased Probability (TIP) of strong earthquakes for Central Italy. The prediction is applied to the events with magnitudeM≥M 0=5.6, which in Central Italy have a return period of about six years. The routinely available digital earthquake bulletins of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica (ING), Rome, permits continuous monitoring. Here we extend to November 1994 the first study made by Keilis-Boroket al. (1990b). On the basis of the combined analysis of seismicity and seismotectonic, we formulate a new regionalization, which reduces the total alarm time and the failures to predict, and narrows the spatial uncertainty of the prediction with respect to the results ofKeilis-Borok et al. (1990b). The premonitory pattern is stable when the key parameters of the CN algorithm and the duration of the learning period are changed, and when different earthquake catalogues are used. The anlysis of the period 1904–1940, for whichM 0=6, allows us to identify self-similar properties between the two periods, in spite of the considerably higher seismicity level of the earlier time interval compared with the recent one.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Before and after irradiation of spleen immunological response of peripheral leukemic lymphocytes to phythemagglutine was studied in vitro. Before irradiation a low percentage of blast appeared. After irradiation of spleen in chronic lymphatic leukemia the percentage of blast-like cells was significantly higher.

Notes: Abstract Urinary recovery and serum determination of Paba were carried out in 48 control children (C) and 53 paediatric patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) divided into three classes by age. Ninety and 120 min after the ingestion of 15 mg/kg of BT-Paba and of a standard meal, serum Paba was determined. In the same subjects the percentage Paba recovery was measured in the urine collected during an 8 h period after the same administration of BT-Paba. Correlation between urinary and serum Paba values was higher in the older children in respect to the 0–2-year-old infants. A urinary Paba test was less sensitive and specific than a serum Paba test in the evaluation of exocrine pancreatic function. The best discrimination between C and children with CF, using the maximal value of serum Paba at 90 or 120 min (peak), was obtained in the younger infants (0–2 years old). BT-Paba test with serum Paba peak determination is recommended as a substitute for the classical urinary Paba test in the evaluation of exocrine pancreatic function in paediatric patients, especially in the younger infants.

Notes: Abstract  The aim of this study was to clarify the inheritance of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) in the ectomycorrhizal basidiomycete Laccaria bicolor S238N in order to resolve inter- and within-strain relationships in forest ecosystems. PCR amplification of the intergenic spacer (IGS) was carried out in the dikaryotic mycelium and its haploid progeny. In the dikaryotic mycelium, multiple amplification products were produced for the 25s/5s (IGS1) and 5s/17s (IGS2) intergenic spacers. The 4.5- and 4.0-kb fragments of IGS2 (haplotypes α and β, respectively) were observed to occur in a 1:1 ratio within the haploid progeny as a result of divergent IGS haplotypes in the two separate nuclei. Recombinant monokaryons having both types of IGS2 occurred at a low frequency (6.5%; 60 kb per centimorgan) during meiosis. Haplotypes α and β of IGS1 cross-hybridized forming heteroduplexes during the PCR temperature cycle. The two IGS1 haplotypes differed only by the repeat number of a TA2C3 motif and co-segregated with the IGS2 haplotypes. Heteroduplex formation and IGS polymorphism provide information that is helpful in distinguishing between introduced exotic L. bicolor S238N and indigenous populations of Laccaria spp. in forest ecosystems.

Notes: The preparation of ceramic pigments using industrial waste, a galvanizing sludge fromthe Cr/Ni plating process, as primary source is here reported. The ceramic pigments were preparedusing the common solid state reaction process, investigating the optimal formulation, milling andfiring conditions. The main focus will be given on the synthesis of chrome-tin red malayaiteCa(Cr,Sn)SiO5 pigment that was fully characterised and then tested in a standard ceramic glaze.Typical working conditions and colour development will be also reported

Notes: Summary The formation of Hg-based HTSC materials was investigated through the development of non-conventional techniques. The former was based on a singlestep synthesis at temperatures significantly lower than usually reported. The basic idea was to exploit the low vapuur pressure of HgO at low temperatures (≈600°C) and in oxygen atmosphere to favour the solid-state reaction between HgO and precursors. Recently, a novel alternative approach essentially based on the oxygen and mercury vapours reactivity for the synthesis of the superconducting phases has been successfully developed. Basically, solid precursors (powders, pellet or thick-film forms) are processed in a two-temperature zone reactor which allowed the independent control of precursors and HgO source temperatures, the partial pressure of HgO and the total pressure during the reaction. In the latter approach, a very low mercury vapour partial pressure (intrinsically below 1–2 atm) was demonstrated to be effective for synthesizing the superconducting phase. The respective merits of both these alternative techniques will be discussed in terms of structural, morphological and magnetic measurements. The low reaction pressure common to both the techniques simplifies largely and makes safer the preparation of these materials, especially in view of applications.
