Notizen: Smoluchowski's equation is widely applied to describe the time evolution of the cluster-size distribution during aggregation processes. Analytical solutions for this equation, however, are known only for a very limited number of kernels. Therefore, numerical methods have to be used for describing the time evolution of the cluster-size distribution. In this work, we present a novel self-consistent method for solving Smoluchowski's equation for any homogeneous kernel. The method considers dynamic scaling to be valid but does not need to assume a given form for the scaling distribution Φ(x). Moreover, the scaling distribution Φ(x) is obtained as a natural result of the algorithm. Due to the implementation of dynamic scaling concepts, the algorithm converges almost immediately with a minimal calculation effort. Comparing calculated size distributions with the corresponding analytical solutions shows the validity of the method. The method is then used to fit experimental data for diffusion limited aggregation. For this purpose, a fitting procedure is developed which allows us to fit the corresponding parameters for any given homogeneous kernel. As an application, a full comparison between the experimental data and the numerically obtained cluster-size distributions for the constant and the Brownian kernel was carried out. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: This paper is concerned with the microstructure observed in colloidal dispersions of charged polymeric particles and their interaction potential at very low ionic strength. Both aspects are probed with the aid of new experimental data for nonaqueous media. The structure factor of ordered dispersions (with methanol–water and ethanol–water solvent mixtures) was determined using static light scattering. A different behavior (in the studied range of molar fraction) depending on the alcohol type is found. These results are analyzed assuming a Yukawa potential and applying integral equation theories (the Ornstein–Zernike equation and the HNC closure). The obtained effective charge is almost constant for methanol–water mixtures, whereas a decrease with the alcohol molar fraction is observed for ethanol–water. In order to account for these effects, a charge renormalization procedure is applied and discussed. The surface charge turns out to be an unsuitable input parameter for such an approach. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Cyclopentadienyl (cpd), methylcpd (mcpd), fluorocpd (Fcpd), and cyanocpd (CNcpd) are generated photolytically, cooled in a supersonic expansion, and clustered with nonpolar solvents. The solvents employed are Ar, N2, CH4, CF4, and C2F6. These radicals and their clusters are studied by a number of laser spectroscopic techniques: Fluorescence excitation (FE), hole burning (HB), and mass resolved excitation (MRE) spectroscopies, and excited state lifetime studies. The radical D1←D0 transition is observed for these systems: The radical to cluster spectroscopic shifts for the clusters are quite large, typically 4 to 5 times those found for stable aromatic species and other radicals. Calculations of cluster structure are carried out for these systems using parameterized potential energy functions. Cluster geometries are similar for all clusters with the solvent placed over the cpd ring and the center-of-mass of the solvent displaced toward the substituent. The calculated cluster spectroscopic shifts are in reasonable agreement with the observed ones for N2 and CF4 with all radicals, but not for C2F6 with the radicals. The Xcpd/Ar data are sacrificed to generate excited state potential parameters for these systems. CH4 is suggested to react with all but the CNcpd radical and may begin to react even with CNcpd. van der Waals vibrations are calculated for these clusters in the harmonic approximation for both D1 and D0 electronic states; calculated van der Waals vibrational energies are employed to assign major cluster vibronic features in the observed spectra. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Background of study Steatocystoma multiplex (SM) and eruptive vellus hair cyst (EVHC). are both entities with similar clinical features, hut with important histological differences. In the last few years, several authors have reported examples of both cysts with mixed historical features, and have proposed the idea that the two conditions are related.Subjects We report here 3 cases, histological features of SM. EVHC, and the other presenting cysts with mixed histological findings. Conclusions The different histological findings in the cases reported support the idea that SM and EVHC are extremes of a spectrum

Notizen: The photoluminescence characteristics (peak intensity, peak wavelength and full width at half maximum of the emission band) of p-type porous silicon have been measured as a function of the etching time. Experimental data are discussed in the light of a pore nucleation and growth mechanism recently proposed by the authors. The steps of the formation of the porous layer are clearly apparent in the photoluminescence characteristic evolution. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The set of diagnostics that are being installed in TJ–II are meant to cover the full photon energy range expected in TJ–II during the electron cyclotron resonance heating phase. The obtained information will be used to evaluate the energy contained in the superthermal electron populations and its possible relevance in the global power balance as well as for standard electron temperature estimations. Two NaI(Tl) detectors located at the equatorial plane of the machine will be used to analyze the highest energy photons (over 50 keV). One Si(Li) and a planar Ge detector will be used to obtain the emission spectra between 1 and 100 keV. Tomographic reconstruction of plasma emissivity (up to 10 keV) will be carried out using four p-n silicon photodiodes arrays of 16 detectors, located at the same poloidal section. An additional camera will be used to detect toroidal asymmetries. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: An experimental setup to measure "in situ" the amount of H that a Pd cathode absorbs during the electrolysis of aqueous solutions has been built up and tested. The setup implements a volumetric technique, i.e., it involves the measurement of the rate of H2 generation by the cathode. The pros and cons of this type of techniques against other procedures, the measurement of the variation of the cathode electrical resistance or of its dilation during the electrolysis, are briefly discussed. A careful analysis of the setup error sources is done by using two non-H-absorbing Pt electrodes. Neither any significant recombination of the electrolysis gases (H2 and O2), nor any deviation of a 100% electrolysis efficiency have been observed. It has been found that gas (air) release and H2 and O2 absorption by the solution, in the first stage of the electrolysis, seriously affect the measurement of the rate of H absorption by the cathode. Several improvements of the experimental installation and an operation protocol of saturation of H2 and O2 and of exhaustion of air in the solution, before starting the electrolysis, allowed overcoming those limitations. Finally, we present the results obtained in the measurement of the rate of H uptake by a Pd cathode during electrolysis. The reliability of the measurement has been confirmed by electrochemically deloading the Pd cathode. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A spatially discriminating optical streaked spectrograph is employed as a plasma diagnostic on the Nova laser. The instrument, which makes use of a spectrometer coupled to a streak camera with CCD readout, observes a small region of Nova target plasmas with a Cassegrain telescope. It yields simultaneous temporal and spectral information about emission and scattered light from the small plasma region. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A complete theoretical treatment of the "mirage'' (optical beam deflection) technique has been performed for thermal diffusivity measurements in solids. Numerical calculations of the transverse deflection show there is a linear relation between the first noncentral zeros of the real part of this function and the inverse root frequency. The slope of this straight line is related to the thermal diffusivity through a factor (γ) which depends on the thermal and optical properties of the sample. We found γ=1 for transparent materials as well as for opaque thermally thin materials, whereas γ=1.44 for opaque thermally thick samples. We study further the experimental limits which make a sample to be considered as an opaque or transparent and as thermally thick or thin, and present a complete classification of solids according to their optical and thermal properties. The different behaviors observed may be related to the different geometry of thermal waves propagating through the media.
