Notes: Summary Serum of 70 patients with malignant lymphoma was tested for concentration of ferritin by immunoradiometric assay. Serum of patients with Hodgkin's disease showed an apparently increased ferritin concentration only in the late stage III and IV. Concentration of serum ferritin was found normal in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of low malignancy. Among patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphome of high malignancy only one who suffered from advanced immunoblastic sarcoma showed increased concentration of serum ferritin. Patients with elevated concentration of serum ferritin had a decreased level of serum iron and showed also anemia. Their bone marrow reticulum was rich in dyeing iron. These results suggest that hyperferritinemia in patients with advanced Hodgkin's disease is related to a lack of release of iron from reticuloendothelial system.

Notes: Summary The concentration of ferritin in the serum of normal males (n=79) was 98 µg/l (geometric mean) with a 95% confidence range of 21–447 µg/l. In nonmenstruating healthy females (n=39), the concentration was 85 (26–279) µg/l. In menstruating females, serum ferritin was 〈30 µg/l only when the duration of menstruation was more than or equal to 4 days. Patients with uncomplicated iron-deficiency anemia had a serum ferritin level 〈20 µg/l. After oral or parenteral iron therapy, serum ferritin was 〉20 µg/l in 7 of 17 patients. Serum ferritin was 〉20 µg/l in 8 of 12 patients with a simultaneous inflammatory or malignant disease. Of patients with iron-deficiency anemia, 86% had a serum ferritin level lower than 40 µg/l. A serum ferritin level 〈40 µg/l was only observed in patients with iron-deficiency anemia and not in patients with other forms of anemia. Of patients with iron-deficiency anemia and a hemoglobin concentration lower than 100 g/l, 80% had a serum iron level 〈13 µmol/l and a total iron binding capacity higher than 70 µmol/l. Anemia of chronic disorders was diagnosed with a sensitivity of 0.93 and a specifity of 0.92 in patients with serum iron 〈13 µmol/l, total iron binding capacity 〈60 µmol/l, erythrocyte sedimentation rate 〉25 mm in the first hour, and serum fibrinogen 〉4 g/l. Somewhat better was the same combination except with the serum ferritin level 〉50 µg/l instead of the iron binding capacity. However the predictive value using both combinations was too low.

Notes: A highly uniform thermal x-radiation field for indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion implosions may be obtained by irradiating a four-hole, tetrahedral geometry, spherical hohlraum with all 60 Omega laser beams. Implosion studies and calculations [J. M. Wallace et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 3807 (1999)] indicate a drive uniformity comparable to that expected for the National Ignition Facility [J. A. Painser et al., Laser Focus World 30, 75 (1994)]. With 60 beams distributed over the cavity wall, tetrahedral hohlraums have a natural insensitivity to power balance and pointing errors. Standard, smooth Nova capsules imploded with this drive indicate that moderate convergence-ratio implosions, Cr∼18, have measured-neutron yield to calculated-clean-one-dimensional-neutronyield ratios similar to those previously investigated using the comparatively poor drive uniformity of Nova cylindrical hohlraums. This may indicate that a nonsymmetry-related neutron yield degradation mechanism, e.g., hydrodynamic mixing of cold, dense ablator material with the hot-spot region or some combination of nonsymmetry effects, is dominating in this Cr regime. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Current plans for time-dependent control of flux asymmetry in the National Ignition Facility [J. A. Paisner, J. D. Boyes, S. A. Kumpan, and M. Sorem, "The National Ignition Facility Project," ICF Quart. 5, 110 (1995)] hohlraums rely on multiple beam cones with different laser power temporal profiles in each cone. Experiments with multiple beam cones have begun on the Omega laser facility [T. R. Boehly et al., Opt. Commun. 133, 495 (1997)] at the University of Rochester. In addition to allowing symmetry experiments similar to those performed on Nova [A. Hauer et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 66, 672 (1995)], the Omega facility allows multiple beam cones to be moved independently to confirm our ability to model the resulting implosion image shapes. Results indicate that hohlraum symmetry behaves similarly with multiple rings of beams as with a single ring, but with the weighted beam spot position used to parametrize the beam pointing.

Notes: Details about the cylindrical implosions using direct-drive irradiation on the OMEGA Laser facility are provided. The experimental configuration, including orientation, construction, and mounting of the targets is described. An attempt to characterize the modulation transfer function of the primary x-ray framing camera diagnostic results in insufficient exposure contrast but relative agreement with other determinations. The x-ray intensity of the titanium backlighter driven by the 2.5-ns-linear ramp of the laser beams is described, and the relative intensity on film is compared to similar Nova experiments. The parallax effects of different length marker layers of high-opacity dichloropolystyrene are measured, resulting in the conclusion that the marker layer length should be matched to the laser drive illumination profile. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A tentative schedule of experiments for the ignition campaign on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) has been developed. These experiments will be used to validate beam pointing and balance, to tune time history and symmetry of drive of NIF hohlraums, and to implode subignition and igniting targets. The initial target diagnostics are designed to validate beam pointing and to demonstrate the properties of the hohlraums. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have constructed two slightly different high-speed framing cameras for use on NOVA and the OMEGA Upgrade. Both units are based on the gating of a microchannel plate, with one detector having a pore length to diameter ratio half that of the other. We will discuss the factors limiting the temporal resolution of each detector and will compare the results of modeling with gate width measurements taken using a short-pulse laser. We will also compare time-resolved x-ray images recorded using one of these devices with data from an older (∼90 ps resolution) detector. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have recently designed and are building a telescope which acts as an imaging light collector relaying the image to an optical table for experiment dependent analysis and recording. The expected primary use of this instrument is a streaked optical pyrometer for witness plate measurements of the hohlraum drive temperature. The telescope is based on the University of Rochester's 10 in. manipulator (TIM) which allows compatibility between Omega, Trident, and the NIF lasers. The optics capture a f/7 cone of light, have a field of view of 6 mm, have a spatial resolution of 5–7 μm per line pair at the object plane, and are optimized for operation at 280 nm. The image is at a magnification of 11.7×, which is convenient for many experiments, but can be changed using additional optics that reside outside the TIM. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have recently designed, built, and fielded a versatile, multichannel x-ray pinhole camera. The Los Alamos pinhole camera was designed to fit into any 6 in. manipulator (SIM) which is a standardized target chamber diagnostic tube. There are currently compatible SIMs available at the Trident, Omega, and NOVA laser systems. The camera uses nine pinholes in a 3×3 array to produce images at the film plane. The film housing is designed to hold multiple sheets of stacked x-ray film which also uses a dark slide to protect the film before exposure. Magnifications of 12, 8, 4, and 2X are selected by slip-on nose cones, which support pinholes, collimators, and blast shields. Individual channel filtering is provided by a 3×3 filter pack containing nine separate filter sub packs. Spatial resolution is limited by the pinhole diffraction limit and field of view is dependent on magnification and filter pack diameter. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
