    Notes: Theoretical profiles of power reflectivity of a phase conjugate electromagnetic wave generated by nearly degenerate four-wave mixing in a carbon plasma via parametric decay instability (PDI) are studied. The plasma is considered to be produced by irradiating a carbon slab target with an Nd:glass high-power laser pulse at an intensity above the PDI threshold. The plasma refractive index corresponding to the PDI region is taken into account in the wave equations. Two electromagnetic pump waves counterpropagating in the plasma are Nd:glass laser light waves and a weak electromagnetic probe wave incident upon the plasma, which is very slightly frequency upshifted relative to the pump waves. The effects of the frequency and angular detuning between the pump and probe waves, pump wave intensity, and plasma parameters on the reflectivity profiles have been investigated. It is noted that the plasma refractive index significantly affects the reflectivity profiles of the phase conjugate wave. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A one-dimensional theoretical model for predicting the heating of a hydrogen plasma in open confinement systems by a relativistic electron beam is presented. Direct energy transfer of beam electrons via interaction with large amplitude waves of the two-stream instability and Ohmic dissipation of plasma return current caused by classical and anomalous resistivities are considered as power input terms. For loss terms, various atomic processes and heat conduction mechanisms are considered. In the light of observed changes in the average scattering angle of the beam inside the plasma, criteria deciding the character of beam–plasma interaction and the estimation of direct power transfer are discussed. The numerical results are presented with a reference to the results of the beam–plasma heating experiments reported in the literature. Better agreement is observed between the experiment and the present analysis.

    Notes: The current multiplication observed when a relativistic electron beam is propagated in an initially neutral gas at subTorr pressures (0.1–0.3 Torr) is generally attributed to the two-stream instability. A general expression for this current gain is derived for a scattered beam propagating in a neutral gas, which takes into account a quasihydrodynamic expression for the beam energy loss. Moreover, the beam-to-plasma density ratio is obtained as a function of time for a given beam pulse by numerically solving the electron energy and continuity equations. It is found that at a given beam-to-plasma density ratio, the current gain increases with increasing the beam energy, with the increase being most rapid for the small scattering angles. A finite average scattering angle is seen to reduce the current multiplication. The experimentally observed peak current gains are in good agreement with the predicted peak gains obtained by taking into account the time-evolved beam-to-plasma density ratio.

    Notes: Summary The effects of microinjection of histamine and its antagonists into mesencephalic nucleus dorsalis raphe, were investigated on mean arterial pressure and heart rate in cats to elucidate the nature and role of histaminergic receptors in cardiovascular regulation. Microinjection of histamine (5 and 10 μg) into nucleus dorsalis raphe elicited both inhibitory and excitatory cardiovascular responses respectively. On the other hand, microinjection of H2-receptor blocker, cimetidine (10 μg) resulted in hypertension and tachycardia while H1-receptor antagonist, mepyramine (10 μg) microinjection evoked hypotension and bradycardia. Furthermore, local pretreatment with cimetidine and mepyramine blocked the inhibitory and excitatory cardiovascular responses of graded doses of histamine microinjection. These H1 and H2 receptors are localized in nucleus dorsalis raphe since microinjection of histamine into adjoining neural structures did not evoke any cardiovascular change. Furthermore, both the inhibitory and excitatory cardiovascular responses to histamine microinjection could not be observed in animals with spinal cord transection and in animals pretreated with p-chlorophenylalanine while they could be observed in bilateral cervical vagotomized animals. Thus, it appears that these cardiovascular responses to microinjection of histamine into nucleus dorsalis raphe, are due to modulation of serotonergic bulbospinal influence on sympathetic preganglionic neurones in the spinal cord. Moreover, the excitatory cardiovascular responses of high dose of histamine (10 μg) seem to result from a local release of noradrenaline since they were blocked by prior microinjection of guanethidine and piperoxan into nucleus dorsalis raphe. A release of noradrenaline in turn, modulates the activity of the neurones of the nucleus by acting on α adrenoceptors and thereby alters the activity of sympathetic preganglionic neurones. These α adrenoceptors appear to be of α1 type (Saxena et al. 1985, 1987) since phenylephrine microinjection evoked excitatory cardiovascular responses could be blocked by piperoxan.

    Notes: Abstract The adynamic, ptotic, hypothermic and conditioned avoidance response blocking effects of reserpine were studied in normal rats and in rats subjected to electroconvulsions for 5 days. Prior exposure to electroconvulsions blocked only the hypothermic response of reserpine. The relevance of this observation to the screening of antidepressant drugs by studying the reserpine antagonism is discussed.

    Notes: Summary Twenty phenothiazine compounds with various substitutions at position 2 and 10 of the nucleus were tested for blockade of apomorphine induced pecking in pigeons. The requirements for maximal activity were -COCH2CH3 substitution at position 2 and a substituted piperazinopropyl group at position 10 of the phenothiazine nucleus. The anti-pecking activity of phenothiazine parallels the blockade of conditioned avoidance response by them. There is lesser correlation between antipecking and antiemetic activities of phenothiazines.

    Notes: Abstract The role of central histaminergic system in foot shock induced aggression was studied in mice. Histamine administered by intracerebral (IC) injection (25–200 μg) produced a significant increase in fighting episodes in a dose dependent manner. It was observed that mepyramine (H1 blocker) given intraperitoneally (IP) significantly increased and metiamide (H2 blocker) given IC decreased significantly the fighting response. To determine the nature of receptors involved in histamine induced facilitation of aggressive behaviour, histamine was administered IC in mice pretreated with mepyramine or metiamide. Mepyramine pretreatment further increased the facilitatory effect of histamine while metiamide blocked the enhancement of aggressiveness by histamine. Combined pretreatment with metiamide and mepyramine decreased significantly the fighting counts which remained unaffected after histamine. Haloperidol did not block the enhancement of aggression by histamine or mepyramine. However, atropine pretreatment partially inhibited the histamine induced increase in the fighting counts. Results of pretreatment with metiamide and atropine were similar to those obtained with pretreatment of metiamide and mepyramine. Metiamide alone or in combination with atropine failed to affect the facilitatory effect of amphetamine on the foot-shockaggression. It is concluded that central histamine H2 receptors have a facilitatory role and H1 receptors an inhibitory role on aggressive behaviour in mice induced by foot-shock. Since histamine per se had a facilitatory effect on foot-shock induced aggression, the central H2 receptors seem to dominate over the H1 receptors.

    Notes: Summary Seven psychic energizers have been quantitatively evaluated for their antidepressant and tranquillizing activity using antagonism of reserpine induced emesis and apomorphine induced pecking in pigeons as test procedures for the two activities respectively. Pheniprazine and deanol possess anti-reserpine activity only whereas imipramine, desmethylimipramine, amitriptyline, opipramol and orphenadrine possess both anti-reserpine as well as anti-apomorphine activity. It is suggested that the two tests form a simple and reliable combination for evaluating potential antidepressants.
