Notes: Abstract. A new high-spin isomer in 145Sm was observed by in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy with the reaction 122Sn(27Al,3np) at 127 MeV performed at the Nordball multi-detector array in Roskilde. The excitation energy of the isomer was determined to be E x= 11147 keV, and using the generalized centroid-shift method its half-life was found to be T 1/2= (7.4 ± 1.0) ns.

Notes: Abstract: High spin states in 128Ba have been investigated with the fusion–evaporation reaction 96Zr(36S,4n)128Ba at a beam energy of 150 MeV with the GASP-spectrometer at INFN in Legnaro, Italy. The level scheme could be extended to higher spins and six-quasiparticle states have been observed. The deduced alignments are compared to the predictions of previously reported cranked shell model calculations.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Intraokularer Druck, Blutdruck der A. ophthalmica und Episkleralvendruck stiegen beim Übergang vom Sitzen zum Liegen an, wohingegen der Blutdruck in der A. subclavia unverändert blieb oder geringgradig abfiel.
Notes: Summary The intraocular pressure, the ophthalmic artery pressure, and the episcleral venous pressure increased after change from sitting to recumbent body position, whereas the subclavian artery pressure remained unchanged or decreased slightly. Changing from recumbent to sitting position was followed by a decrease in IOP, ophthalmic pressure, and subclavian artery pressure. Comparing the last measurement in the first position to the first value after change, it was found that the IOP alters by about 20%, the ophthalmic artery pressure by 15%, and the episcleral venous pressure by 50%. In all series a decrease in subclavian artery pressure was observed during the first 15 min. The mean pressure in the ophthalmic artery diminished in the series that changed from sitting to recumbent position, whereas it increased in the other series during the first 15 min. The episcleral venous pressure increased more than the corresponding IOP after changing to the recumbent position.

Notes: Summary Using the applanation tonometry of Goldmann (mechanical-optical applanation principle with constant diameter of the applanation circle) as a reference system, a test plan inclusive of the necessary conditions for the clinical control measurements of new tonometer types and guiding values for judging the usefulness of these new developments are described. For calculation of the statistical values a computer program in BASIC system is specified.

Notes: Abstract: Excited states of the nucleus ν123Xe have been investigated with the fusion–evaporation-reaction ν110Pd(ν18O,5n)ν123Xe at 86 MeV beam energy, using the compton-suppressed Nordball-multidetector-system at the Niels-Bohr-Institute in Risø, Denmark. The level scheme of ν123Xe was extended up to a level of tentative 53/2+ħ. Four excited bands of 3-quasiparticle-character were observed. Analyzing the directional correlation information, we could assign spin- and parity-values to all observed bands in ν123Xe. The observed band structures fit well into systematics of the neighboring nuclei ν125Xe and ν127Xe.

Notes: Abstract: An in-beam experiment with the reaction 122Sn(27Al,4np) at 127 MeV was performed at the Nordball multi-detector array in Roskilde. It provided evidence for a new high-spin isomer in 144Sm. This isomer with T 1/2= (2.6 ± 0.5) ns at an excitation energy E x= 9232 keV seems to belong to a family of isomers of similar configuration in neighbouring N= 82 nuclei.

Notes: Abstract. Reliable and precise lifetimes of excited states in 154 Gd and 156 Dy were measured using the recoil distance Doppler shift (RDDS) technique. Excited states of 154 Gd were populated via Coulomb excitation with a 32 S beam at 110 MeV delivered by the FN tandem accelerator at the University of Cologne. For 156 Dy a coincidence plunger experiment was performed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro with the GASP spectrometer and the Cologne coincidence plunger apparatus using the reaction 124 Sn(36 S,4n)156 Dy at a beam energy of 155 MeV. Shape changes previously suggested to appear in the ground-state band (gsb) of 156 Dy and in the s-band above the first band crossing were not supported by the transition probabilities determined in this work. The measured transition probabilities of 156 Dy and 154 Gd as well as the corresponding energy spectra are compared with the predictions of the recently proposed X(5) model and in the case of 156 Dy also with an IBA fit.

Notes: Summary GABA and GABA-related properties in the enteric nervous system of the gastrointestinal tract, the third and most complex division of the vertebrate autonomic nervous system, have been the subject of relatively few studies. This chapter aims at being a comprehensive review of these investigations. With respect to GABA the enteric nervous system shows in some respects similarities with, and in others, notable differences from other parts of the peripheral nervous system. Like the cell bodies of other autonomic and sensory neurons, the cell bodies of enteric neurons possess bicuculline and picrotoxin sensitive GABA receptors, the activation of which leads to depolarization, probably mediated by increase in Cl− conductance. Further, in common with other peripheral glia, the cell membrane of the enteric glial cells appears to contain β-alanine sensitive high affinity transport sites by which they can accumulate exogenous GABA. However, the present-evidence, although not completely conclusive, suggests that unlike other parts of the peripheral nervous system, the enteric ganglia may contain a population of GABA-ergic neurons; in vertebrates such neurons have hitherto been thought to be present in the brain and spinal cord only. At present the most important single strand of evidence for this notion is the demonstration of a population of enteric neurons possessing high affinity transport sites for GABA, while it is supported by studies of GAD and GABA content, the effects of GABA receptor blockade on gut motility and GABA release.

Notes: Summary In order to investigate the possible role of Schwann cells in immune reactions, and in particular their involvement in the response to infection withMycobacterium leprae, it was determined under what conditions Schwann cells express major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC class II) antigens, since these molecules are thought to have a key role in antigen presentation during cellular immune responses. In situ andin vitro preparations from newborn and adult rat sciatic nerves were used as a model system to examine this question. Schwann cells in dissociated cell cultures did not express immunohistochemically detectable amounts of MHC class II antigens. Teased nerve preparations from the sciatic nerves of healthy adult rats showed no detectable immunolabelling of either myelin-forming or non-myelin-forming Schwann cells. When dissociated Schwann cell cultures derived from the sciatic nerves of either neonatal or adult rats were treated with 10, 50 or 100 units of gamma Interferon, MHC class II antigens were detectable on the surface of some Schwann cells 48 h after addition of the interferon. By 72 h, 32.29 ± 3.9% of Schwann cells in the cultures from neonatal rats and 53.32 ± 5.4% of Schwann cells in cultures from adult rats, identified by the presence of intracellular S-100, were clearly MHC class II-positive, especially at doses of 50 and 100 units per ml of gamma interferon. Some, but not all, of the fibroblastic cells were very weakly MHC class Il-positive. Infection of the cultures withMycobacterium leprae did not induce MHC class II antigen expression in either Schwann cells or fibroblasts. These results suggest that one of the functional roles of Schwann cells' is the presentation of foreign antigens to T lymphocytes during nerve infection, leading to activation or augmentation of the cellular immune response. With respect toMycobacterium leprae in particular, it is therefore possible that infected Schwann cells might be capable of participating in the normal immune response toMycobacterium leprae.
