Notes: Abstract The facultative parasitic copepod Pseudomyicola spinosus (Raffaele & Monticelli) was cultured and mated under laboratory conditions. Twenty virgin females were cultured in isolation and mated. They were cultured individually after mating, and examined for lifespan, number of ovipositions, number of eggs, and other features. The longest lifespan of a female P. spinosus was 2.3 years (849 d). This female laid eggs 106 times after a single mating, and all of the eggs developed. The lifespan and number of ovipositions varied with the individual, but the interval between ovipositions showed less variation (7.0±2.3 d). The number of eggs laid at one oviposition decreased with the increase in the age of the female. The number of eggs at each oviposition was smaller in laboratory females than in wild females, but the oviposition rhythm and the interval between ovipositions seemed to be the same. The sperms seem to survive for quite a while in the seminal receptacle of a female. A male can copulate a multiple of times. The lifespan of P. spinosus in the natural environment should be less than a year, considering the lifespan of the host mussels.

Notes: Abstract For use in the treatment of malignant hepatic tumors, we undertook selective segmental ablation of the liver by transportal ethanol injection, first studying its efficacy and safety in rats. We forced a 4: 1 mixture of ethanol and contrast medium from a syringe into hepatic tissues via a branch of the portal vein in 80 Wistar rats. The amount of ethanol injected was from 0.05 to 0.60 ml. Soon after the injection, the hepatic segment treated with ethanol was yellowish-white with a distinct outline. Two to three weeks after the injection, the segment was completely necrotic. The findings when a mixture of ethanol and India ink was injected suggested that the necrosis was a direct result of the ethanol. The portal branch into which the injection was made was completely obstructed immediately after the injection. The maximum ethanol concentration in the peripheral blood was 0.4 mg/ml. No histological changes were found in any other organ. Liver and kidney function was almost unaffected. This technique might be useful clinically for the treatment of malignant hepatic tumors.

Notes: Abstract In three patients with ileus CT showed a whirl sign in which the bowel and mesenteric folds encircled the superior mesenteric vein in a whirl-like pattern. Two patients were confirmed surgically to have small-bowel volvulus arising from postoperative adhesions. The whirl sign is useful in decision-making about the need for surgery. A CT examination should be performed for patients with ileus of unknown cause.

Notes: Abstract Clinical results of fluoroscopic fallopian tube catheterisation and absorbed radiation doses during the procedure were evaluated in 30 infertility patients with unilateral or bilateral tubal obstruction documented on hysterosalpingography. The staged technique consisted of contrast injection through an intraurine catheter with a vacuum cup device, ostial salpingography with the wedged catheter, and selective salpingography with a coaxial microcatheter. Of 45 fallopian tubes examined, 35 (78%) were demonstrated by the procedure, and at least one tube was newly demonstrated in 26 patients (87%). Six of these patients conceived spontaneously in the follow-up perod of 1–11 months. Four pregnancies were intraurine and 2 were ectopic. This technique provided accurate and detailed information in the diagnosis and treatment of tubal obstruction in infertility patients. The absorbed radiation dose to the ovary in the average standardised procedure was estimated to be 0.9 cGy. Further improvement in the X-ray equipment and technique is required to reduce the radiation dose.

Notes: Abstract Objective: To investigate the effect of acidification and alkalinization on the pharmacokinetics of sparfloxacin in healthy subjects. Methods: A single 200-mg oral dose of sparfloxacin was given to nine healthy Japanese volunteers on three separate occasions under different conditions of urinary pH. Acidic and alkaline conditions were achieved by repeated oral doses of ammonium chloride and sodium bicarbonate, respectively. The concentrations of sparfloxacin and its metabolite in plasma and urine were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography assays. Results: The difference between treatments for Cmax, AUC∞, and CL · f−1 were found to be significant. The relative bioavailability of sparfloxacin was 84.4% and 122.3% after ammonium chloride and sodium bicarbonate treatments, respectively. The amount of unchanged sparfloxacin in urine samples collected 0–48 h after sparfloxacin administration represented 10.1% of the dose in the control, 14.3% of the dose in urine acidification and 8.4% of the dose with alkalinization of urine. Renal clearance was found to depend on urinary pH. However, the plasma elimination and the metabolism of sparfloxacin were not significantly altered by acidification or alkalinization of the urine. Conclusion: The urinary pH dependence of the renal clearance of sparfloxacin will be of minor clinical importance with regard to the low contribution of renal excretion to the overall elimination of sparfloxacin. On the other hand, the alteration in the environmental pH in the gastrointestinal tract, produced by the concomitant ingestion of ammonium chloride or sodium bicarbonate, influences the absorption and bioavailability of sparfloxacin. This effect is likely to be clinically significant.

Notes: Summary Ten healthy male volunteers were given trimethadione (TMO) 4 mg/kg and antipyrine (AP) 500 mg alone or concomitantly to determine whether the metabolism of the drugs was mediated by the same or closely related forms of cytochrome P-450. Whether administered alone or together the clearance (CL) and half-life (t1/2) of TMO and AP were the same, and there was a good correlation between the CL and t1/2 of TMO and AP (aloner=0.755 and 0.623, respectively; coadministeredr=0.771 and 0.503, respectively). Excretion of AP and its main metabolite and the clearance for production of AP metabolites after AP was administered alone were not significantly different when TMO and AP were taken together. When the two drugs were administered alone or coadministered, the correlation between the CL of TMO and the excretion of 3-hydroxymethyl-3-norantipyrine (NORA) was close (aloner=0.734, coadministeredr=0.749). The correlation between the CL of TMO and CLm of NORA when TMO and AP were given alone or concomitantly was 0.762 and 0.772, respectively. The findings suggest that TMO metabolism and the formation of NORA in healthy subjects are mediated by a closely related form(s) of the cytochrome P-450 system.
